Each of us possesses different strengths and weaknesses that impact how quickly we "take" to a new physical activity like swimming. Moreover, we learn at different speeds in our own unique way. So, why do so many swim schools seem to insist on teaching their small group classes using a "one-size-fits-all" model? Why do they cling to a rigid and static model of education that risks leaving some - and perhaps many - students behind? We founded Kentucky Swim Academy to offer you the choice of a different approach - one that prioritizes the basic fundamentals of great teaching. Written by experienced public school teachers and swim instructors, our curriculum employs techniques grounded in strength-based education to empower our teachers with the latitude and flexibility to adapt each lesson plan to the demonstrated needs and progress of each student. Whether your student is enrolled in a group, semi-private, or private class, they will benefit from an individualized and adaptive approach to swimming instruction that focuses not on their progression from one arbitrary "level" to another - but instead upon what he or she needs to do in order to achieve a basic level of comfort and competence in and around water. Through regular updates and specific, individualized feedback, we will help you understand and build upon your student's unique strengths. Our teaching methods are based upon the principles of Universal Design of Instruction. OUSTANDING TEACHERS As we grow, Kentucky Swim Academy looks forward to hiring people who love to teach above all else and who have the requisite drive and skills to reach students with divergent abilities on an individual level - and we are committed to providing those teachers the tools they need to do just that. Rather than hiring expert swimmers and hoping they know how to teach well, we will strive to employ excellent teachers who would be as comfortable in the classroom as they are in a pool. THE IMPORTANCE OF WHAT TEACHERS SAY Kentucky Swim Academy instructors are trained to utilize concise, precise, and constructive, strengths-based language. Providing concise instructions - or "chunking" - is particularly beneficial for young and/or neurodivergent students who have not yet developed the memory skills or the cognitive energy to process long sets of directions. Precise feedback constitutes an essential means of ensuring that students understand how to correct, improve, and build upon their skills. Merely telling a student "good job" will not suffice, as they need specific information regarding what they did properly and where they need to improve. Finally, constructive, strengths-based language serves as the backbone of our instruction because we strive to encourage and motivate every student toward excellence. ABOUT LEVELS To get straight to the point, we don't have them. We have organized our curriculum into seven units, instead, because that term better describes how we teach. At a fundamental level, "unit" and "level" seem like interchangeable terms designed to mark a student's progress (much like the concept of "grades" in a traditional academic environment). Yet, while one can only use the term "unit" to describe a student's incremental progress through a course of study, we think that the term "level" carries broader - and potentially unhelpful - implications. First, the notion that a student has reached a certain "level" connotes a degree of mastery that is inconsistent with the way we teach. Second, the term itself is capable of misuse as a label. We certainly aspire to help every student master every skill, and we will do all that we can to reach that goal. Yet, not every student will be capable of mastering every skill - and one need not achieve mastery to become water-safe. Thus, we believe that the concept of "levels" which require a student to master a laundry list of prerequisite skills unwittingly conveys an all-or-nothing mindset that ultimately proves counterproductive for swim students and their instructors alike. Just like in a well-operating academic setting, our students have a "course of study" - or, in our case, a progression of skills they will learn which we have divided for practical reasons into individual units. When a particular student demonstrates a baseline degree of competence and confidence in performing the skills that comprise a unit, they will move on to the next unit - but they will continue to practice, develop, and build upon the skills they learned in the previous unit while the new unit introduces them to a fresh set of skills. In other words, our program features units that group together points of emphasis instead of describing "levels" of student attainment, which we believe can become a discouraging distraction for students and their parents or guardians. It would be impossible (not to mention unwise) to eliminate any notion of student progress or achievement from any curriculum, and we certainly have not done so in our program. We just think that the concept of "units" better fits our continuum of learning, where every student must move at his or her own pace; so as to steadily and confidently embrace new topics while constantly building upon what they have learned. AN ESSENTIAL PARTNERSHIP We believe that students will progress most quickly toward their individual goals - and toward the universal baseline of having the skills they need to enjoy the water and remain safe around it - when parents and guardians remain closely engaged in their student's swim instruction. Accordingly, our teachers will regularly provide updates to the parent or guardian who listed his or her name and email address under "Contact 1" on the Kentucky Swim Academy registration form (for more information about how you can keep track of your student's progress, see Check on My Student's Progress). We cannot overemphasize the importance of appropriately managing expectations as your student learns to swim. People learn different things at varying speeds and rates for a number of reasons - and the pace at which your student moves through our program will bear very little relation to what kind of swimmer they will become. Our instructors will work with each other, with parents and guardians, and most of all, with students themselves to ensure the steady accumulation of skills and competencies that ultimately produce a person who can stay comfortable and safe in and around water. Parents and guardians can serve as essential partners in helping individual students understand that our program is not a competition or race to see who can get through a particular unit - or our entire program - the fastest. Instead, we hope that you will encourage your student to thoroughly learn each skill to the best of their ability, however long that takes - and that every unit they complete constitutes a small but significant part of a longer and more important journey. Enroll Now Swim for Your Life, Kentucky! OUR MISSION According to the University of Kentucky's Kentucky Geological Survey, "Kentucky has more navigable miles of water than any other state than Alaska." We are indeed blessed by our abundance of rivers, lakes, and streams that offer something for just about anyone - whether you like to boat, fish, swim, hike, or just put up your feet and enjoy the wonders of nature around you. Yet, our abundance of water has also produced deadly consequences for our state and its people. As Kentucky Today's Tom Latek has reported, "329 Kentuckians died by unintentionally drowning between 2016 and 2021" and "the highest percentage of drowning deaths involved a natural body of water (37%)." Moreover, from 2015 through 2019, 1.45 out of every 100,000 Kentuckians died from drowning every year; a figure that was 2.8% higher than West Virginia, 9% higher than Tennessee, 10.7% higher than Missouri, 28.3% higher than Indiana, and 33.8% higher than Ohio, Illinois, and Virginia. Clearly, we can - and we must - do better. We have provided a selection of some of our favorite pictures of Kentucky waterways below - both as a celebration of our state's natural beauty and as a reminder that more Kentuckians deserve the opportunity to enjoy these waterways safely. At Kentucky Swim Academy, we strive to do our part in helping our fellow Kentuckians defeat the tragic scourge of drowning. We also seek to raise the profile of swimming instruction; particularly as an indispensable component of our children's education. We certainly hope that you will choose us if you or your child needs swimming lessons. Yet, even if you select one of our competitors and one less Kentuckian is at risk of drowning as a result, we will consider a part of our mission as fulfilled. Accordingly, please pay careful attention to the following instructions for parking and accessing the pool area. The two pictures that appear immediately below (together with the picture that appears in the following section (entitled "How to Access the Pool Area) visually illustrate these instructions. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping us provide the most constructive learning experience for your student while maintaining the best possible relationship with our host facility. * As you approach the GLō Best Western Lexington from Newtown Pike, you will see two entrances to the hotel's parking lot. The first entrance leads directly to the covered area (called the "port cochere") where guests temporarily park in order to enter the lobby and check in to the hotel). Please do not use this entrance. Please turn left into the secondentrance instead. * After you turn left into the second entrance to the hotel's parking lot, you will see the pool wing directly ahead of you. Take an immediate right (as directed by our sign) and then take another immediate left into the parking area that lies to the right of the pool wing (as one faces the hotel directly) or behind the pool wing (as one approaches the hotel from Newtown Pike). You may park in any of the open spaces in that area. If all of the spaces in that area are occupied, you may look for spaces in front of the pool wing or on the left side of the pool wing (as one faces the hotel directly). HOW TO ACCESS THE POOL AREA When you finish parking in Kentucky Swim Academy's designated area of the GLō Best Western Lexington's parking lot, you should clearly see the door you will use to enter the pool area. That door is located on the right side of the pool wing as one faces the hotel directly and behind the pool wing as one approaches the hotel from Newtown Pike. You will see a sign on that door containing our logo that identifies it accordingly. Please note the arrow encircled by red in the picture on the right, which identifies the door that you will use (from the perspective of being inside the pool area). FACILITY POLICIES We are very grateful that the GLō Best Western Lexington has agreed to serve as our first host facility. We know that you will be as impressed as we are with this facility and its ownership, management, and staff - and that you will agree with us that it constitutes an exceptionally comfortable, clean, and inviting place for anyone learning how to swim. Please join us in showing the GLō Best Western Lexington your appreciation and its guests your respect by adhering to the following policies while ensuring that your student and any guest you bring to his or her lesson does the same. * Please do not enter any other area of the hotel beyond the pool area. The pool wing has its own self-contained restroom and four private changing tents will be available on the pool deck for your student's use as necessary. * As the staff of the GLo Best Western Lexington does not have any information about Kentucky Swim Academy, please do not call the hotel or approach anyone associated with the hotel with any questions about our swim school. Instead, the Deck Supervisor will be present for every lesson and will be happy to speak with you. * We cannot permit any food or drink in the pool building except for non-glass bottled water. * You (or a person who brings your child to his or her lesson with your permission) may bring one additional guest to watch your child's lesson. We regret that due to limited space on the pool deck, we cannot accommodate any additional persons. * Please remember that you (or anyone who brings your child to his or her lesson) will be solely responsible for monitoring the whereabouts, behavior, and safety of any minor child whom you bring with you, as we must focus exclusively on the safety and learning experiences of the students who are participating in our swim lessons. HOW TO . . . Expand All Enroll in a Class Kentucky Swim Academy currently offers three types of swim instruction classes: group classes (four students per instructor), private classes (one student per instructor), and semi-private classes (one student per instructor). We subdivide our group classes into three age categories: nine months through two years of age; three through twelve years of age, and thirteen years and up (our group class for children from nine months through two years of age - called a "parent and child" class - requires a parent or guardian to actively participate in the class). Our private classes are for children from three years of age, teens, and adults, while our semi-private classes are for children from three to twelve years of age. To see more detailed information regarding our class offerings, please see Classes and Pricing below. Our calendar is organized into four-week sessions, which consist of four half-hour-long classes that meet on the same day at the same time each week. Please note that if a holiday falls on a day of the week when the class you have chosen would otherwise meet, that class will only meet three times during that particular session (i.e., there will be no makeup class and we will prorate your student's tuition accordingly when you pay for that class). Students may enroll in up to three classes per week in any particular session. To begin the enrollment process, please click Please note that before you can submit your registration, you must indicate your agreement (by checking boxes located at the bottom of our registration form) to three legally binding documents entitled "Waiver, Release of Liability and Terms of Service," "Medical Emergencies," and "Tuition, Billing, and Payment." Please review each document carefully, as while we have done our best to explain the essence of what they contain in sections throughout our website, those summaries are not and cannot be a comprehensive representation of the obligations you are undertaking and the legal rights you are waiving through your agreement to these documents. Please also note that you must submit full payment for any class that you have selected in order to complete the enrollment. If you wish to take more time to think about what class(es) you wish to select, you may delete the class you previously selected and click "Submit Registration" to complete your registration without enrolling in a class. You may then log in to your Parent Portal account at any time and start the class selection process over again from your Parent Portal dashboard. Use Our Parent Portal Jackrabbit Class, the provider of the Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal, has produced this helpful and informative video which offers you a survey of features that you can access in the Parent Portal. Please be advised that Kentucky Swim Academy does not utilize all of the functionality that this video covers. For example, we do not require you to record your student's absences (although you may do so if you wish) and we do not handle the scheduling of makeup classes through the Parent Portal (instead, please see our Makeup Procedures). Check on My Student's Progress The Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal offers a convenient means for you to keep track of the classes in which you have enrolled your student and the scheduled meeting times for those classes. It also enables you to see all of the emails we have sent you and view all of your account records, including your transactions with us to date. Perhaps the most important feature of your Parent Portal, however, is that it provides you with the ability to keep track of your student's progress. While your student's instructor will periodically send you emails or texts (provided you opt-in to receive them) in an effort to provide you with individualized updates regarding your student, your Parent Portal will contain a record of your student's achievement of specific benchmarks (organized as "skills" and "subskills") as he or she progresses through our Units of Instruction, together with instructor notes that specifically relate to your student. To access this feature, log in to your Parent Portal account, click on your student's name, and then click on "Skills" at the far right of the menu that appears under your student's name. Cope With My Student's Anxiety As parents ourselves, we remember all too well how difficult it was to hear our children cry due to separation anxiety or out of fear of the unknown. We also recall how important it was to our children's development to resist our impulse to run to our children when we needed to stand back and give them time to adjust to a new situation. Thus, we understand how much you will want to come to your student's assistance if he or she cries when class begins or when he or she goes underwater for the first time. Yet, please do not do so - as it is imperative that you give your student's instructor the time it will take to help your student become comfortable - not just in a group setting that includes several unfamiliar (but friendly!) faces, but also with the notion of putting his or her face in the water. The bottom line is that your student simply cannot learn how to stay safe in or around water until he or she knows how to function and react properly when his or her face goes underwater. Perhaps your student might never enjoy swimming nor engage in other water-based activities (we have a relative who falls into that category, but who nevertheless knows how to stay safe in water and around water) - but that fact constitutes no guarantee that your student won't ever confront a situation where the ability to react properly underwater could have lifesaving importance. Communicate with My Student's Instructor Because we are a new swim school with a small staff, your student's instructor will generally have classes that end immediately before or begin immediately after your student's lesson (moreover, everyone on our staff will be fully engaged in set-up and break-down and clean-up activities before and after each day's schedule of classes). Accordingly, your student's instructor will not have time to answer questions or discuss your student immediately before or after your student's class. Particularly as we prioritize individualized feedback with respect to every student we teach, however, you will have regular opportunities to interact with your student's instructor and address any issues or concerns that you might have. Your student's instructor will periodically send you emails or texts (provided you opt-in to receive them) in an effort to provide you with specific updates regarding your student's progress. You may reply to those emails/texts as you wish - and as appropriate, your student's instructor will respond with additional information and/or answers - and as schedules permit, your student's instructor will agree to meet you in person to discuss matters further. Please keep in mind when you reply to the initial email or text from your student's instructor, it may take up to twenty-four hours - or perhaps even a few days - for your student's instructor to send you a follow-up response. In the absence of an emergency or other exigency, you can count on receiving a follow-up response prior to your student's next lesson, in any event. Change My Student's Schedule If you need to change the time and/or date of your student's scheduled class(es) during a session that is currently in progress, we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Please send an email toscheduling@kyswims.com that identifies your student's current class and specifies the time and date of any class(es) to which you would like to transfer your student's enrollment. NOTE: Please specify at least three class times and/or dates that would work for you and your student. You may wish to check our up-to-date Class Listings before you send your email to what date(s) and times(s) currently have openings. If an open spot exists in any of those classes, we will immediately and automatically transfer your student's enrollment to that class in order to secure your student's space in that class. If an open spot is not available at any of the date(s) or time(s) you specify in your email, we will be happy to waitlist your student for the upcoming session and we will notify you as soon as a spot becomes available. In the meantime, if your student has missed classes or may have to miss classes during the remainder of the current session, we will be happy to work with you to schedule makeup class(es) per our liberal, no-excuse-necessary Makeup Procedures. If you need to make scheduling changes for the upcoming session, we strongly urge you to notify us via email at scheduling@kyswims.com, so that if we cannot accommodate your request you will still have the option to withdraw your student(s), as necessary, before the next automatic payment date, when your student's current enrollment will automatically "roll over" to the upcoming session and your payment method as specified in your Kentucky Swim Academy Payment Portal Account will be charge accordingly. To see upcoming automatic payment dates, go to Session Dates, Holidays, and Scheduled Closures and choose the tab on the far right entitled "Automatic Payment Dates"). To see how to change your primary method of payment, go to Tuition, Payment and Billing and then click on the tab entitled "Payment Methods." Withdraw My Student If you wish to withdraw your student from being enrolled in any class at Kentucky Swim Academy during the upcoming session, you must send an email to that effect to withdrawals@kyswims.com by 11:59 p.m. on the day which precedes the next automatic payment date (to see upcoming automatic payment dates, go to Session Dates, Holidays, and Scheduled Closures and choose the tab on the far right entitled "Automatic Payment Dates"). No other means of communication will accomplish an effective withdrawal; such that if you do not send us the email by the deadline specified above, your student's current enrollment will "roll over" to the next session and the primary payment method that you have specified in your Parent Portal account will be charged accordingly (to see how to change your primary method of payment, go to Tuition, Payment and Billing and then click on the tab entitled "Payment Methods." IF YOUR STUDENT IS ENROLLED IN MULTIPLE CLASSES If your student was enrolled in multiple weekly classes during the current session -and you wish to drop one or more of those classes but keep your student in another class during the upcoming session, you must still send an email to withdrawals@kyswims.com by 11:59 p.m. on the day that precedes the next automatic payment date(to see upcoming automatic payment dates, go to Session Dates, Holidays, and Scheduled Closures and choose the tab on the far right entitled "Automatic Payment Dates"). Your email must specifically identify (by day of the week and starting time) the class(es) from which you wish to withdraw your student. Upon our timely receipt of your email, we will adjust your tuition - and the amount charged on the next automatic payment date - accordingly. Please note that if you do not send us this email by the deadline stated above, your currently specified payment method will be charged the same amount as the current session on the automatic payment date for the upcoming session. IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE STUDENT ENROLLED If you have more than one student enrolled in one or more of our weekly classes during the current session and you wish to withdraw one or more of your student(s) from our classes while leaving one or more of your student(s) enrolled with us for the next session, you must send an email to withdrawals@kyswims.comby 11:59 p.m. on the day that precedes the next automatic payment date(to see upcoming automatic payment dates, go to Session Dates, Holidays, and Scheduled Closures and choose the tab on the far right entitled "Automatic Payment Dates"). Your email must specifically identify the student whom you wish to withdraw. If you wish to withdraw that student from some classes and leave him/her enrolled in other class(es) during the upcoming session, you must specifically identify (by day of the week and starting time) the class(es) from which you wish to withdraw that student; else we will presume that you wish to withdraw that student from all classes. Enroll Now PREPARE FOR CLASS Expand All Who May - and Who Must - Attend Due to limited space in our host facility, Kentucky Swim Academy regrets that it must limit attendance at our swim instruction classes to a maximum of two people per student. For the safety and security of our students, the parent or guardian who registered each student must transport his or her student to every class, remain in the pool area of our host facility during the entire duration of that student's class, and transport his or her student away from our host facility at the conclusion of every class. Another person may transport a student to and from his or her class with the express authorization of the parent or guardian who enrolled the student in that class. That same person must remain in the pool area of our host facility for the entire duration of that student's class and transport that student away from that particular class. We recommend that if an enrolling parent or guardian anticipates that another person will regularly transport his or her student to and from our classes, that other person should be listed as the "second contact" on the Kentucky Swim Academy family registration form that the parent or guardian must complete before enrolling his or her student. Such listing as a "second contact" will serve as sufficient evidence that the person listed as such has the enrolling parent or guardian's authorization as set forth above. We cannot place enough emphasis on the imperative that the person who brings a student to class must remain in the pool area of our host facility for the entire duration of that student's 30-minute class. In order to keep all of our students safe, we cannot permit our attention to be diverted away from the students we are teaching in the water for one instant - and we are not equipped to supervise students before or after their class. In short, we are not a "drop-off" program and cannot operate like one. If an emergency or some other exigency arises that requires you (or the person who brought a student to class with your permission) to leave our host facility, we ask that you notify the Deck Supervisor at once. We will immediately remove your student from his or her class and we will be glad to schedule a makeup class per our liberal, no-excuse-necessary Makeup Procedures . What to Bring Please make certain that your student comes to each lesson with the following items. We regret that for health reasons, we cannot loan these items to students. * Suitable swimming attire. * A pair of goggles. * A hair tie or swim cap (to keep hair out of your student's face). * At least one clean, dry towel. * A change of clothes (optional). Four private changing tents will be available on the pool deck for your student's use and convenience. * A reusable diaper to wear inside a disposable swim diaper if a) your student is younger than three years old or b) he/she still has occasional "accidents." When to Come Please arrive a few minutes before the time for your student's lesson to allow time for your student to "settle in" before his or her lesson and use the restroom if necessary. We ask that you make sure that your student has used the restroom right before he or she leaves to travel to our host facility, as we have just one "family restroom" in the pool area at our host facility - but if you have any doubts, please have your student use the restroom at our host facility before he or she enters the water. "Accidents" in the pool can require the pool's closure (and the cancellation and rescheduling of lessons) for up to 24 hours. To make sure you receive the value you deserve for your money and prevent unnecessary distractions to other students, we cannot allow students who arrive more than ten minutes late to join lessons in progress. We will be happy to reschedule a makeup class per our liberal, no-excuse-necessary Makeup Procedures. What to Do When You Arrive When you arrive for class at our host facility with your student, you will see an area at the far end of the pool from where you enter the pool area which contains tables and chairs. Please immediately proceed with your student to that area and wait there until the Deck Supervisor calls your student's name, at which time you may bring your student poolside as the Deck Supervisor instructs. Please return to the area containing tables and chairs for the duration of your student's lesson, as we have limited space on the pool deck itself and it is also important that your student not be distracted by your immediate proximity during his or her lesson We ask that you make sure that your student has used the restroom right before he or she leaves to travel to our host facility, as we have just one "family restroom" in the pool area at our host facility - but if you have any doubts, please have your student use the restroom at our host facility before he or she enters the water. "Accidents" in the pool can require the pool's closure (and the cancellation and rescheduling of lessons) for up to 24 hours. Enroll Now POLICIES NOTE: Creating an account with the Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal - which you must do prior to enrolling a student - requires that you check a box that indicates your assent to three documents entitled "Waiver, Release of Liability, and Terms of Service," "Tuition, Billing, and Payment Policies," and "Medical Emergencies," respectively. These documents incorporate many of the policies and procedures explained below and elsewhere on this website into a formal and legally binding agreement. Please read those documents carefully, as the summaries that we are providing on this website are not and cannot be a comprehensive representation of the obligations you are undertaking and the legal rights you are waiving through your agreement to those documents. Expand All Tuition, Billing and Payment Calculating Tuition Kentucky Swim Academy sells swim instruction lessons in four-week blocks (called "sessions"). When enrolling your student, you will select among 30-minute classes that meet at the same time on the same day of the week throughout each four-week session. Space permitting, you may enroll your student in up to three classes per week. Due to previously scheduled holidays and school closures, some classes may meet just three times in a particular month, in which case we will charge you for three classes instead of four. We will calculate your student's tuition as follows: a) The list cost of the class in which your student enrolls (for prices, go to the main menu above and click "What We Offer" and then "Classes") b) times the number of weekly classes in which your student enrolls c) minus any discounts that apply (see the "Discounts" tab directly to the right). Per recently enacted Kentucky legislation, we must charge a 6% sales tax on the total tuition payable. If you enroll your student after the class(es) you have selected have met at least once, we will prorate the tuition for your student's first session accordingly. Discounts Kentucky Swim Academy currently offers two separate discounts: a $20.00 "multiclass discount" and a 10% sibling discount. A "multiclass discount" applies when you enroll the same student in two or more weekly classes during the same session. Under that scenario, you will pay the full list price for the first class while receiving a $20.00 discount for each additional weekly class in which you enroll your student. A "sibling discount" applies when you enroll two or more students (who are siblings or half-siblings) in one or more of KSA's weekly classes during the same calendar month (they need not be enrolled in the same weekly class or classes). Under those circumstances, you will pay the full list price for the first weekly class in which your first student enrolls. You will then receive 10% off the full list price for the first weekly class in which any sibling or half-sibling (up to a limit of six) enrolls. If any sibling or half-sibling enrolls in a second or third weekly class during the same session as your first student, you will receive the benefit of both discounts. For example: You enroll Student 1 in two of our weekly group classes during the same calendar month. In that case, your total tuition payment will be $220.00 (the full monthly price of $120 for the first weekly class and the discounted price of $100.00 for the second weekly class). If you then enroll each of two siblings or half-siblings of Student 1 in two weekly classes during the same session, you will pay $108 for the first weekly class in which each sibling or half-sibling enrolls ($120 minus 10%, or $12.00) and $90.00 for each second class in which each sibling or half-sibling enrolls ($100 minus 10%, or $10.00). Payment Dates Kentucky Swim Academy tuition is payable in advance prior to each session in which your student remains enrolled in one or more of our classes. You will be required to pay the full amount of tuition due for the upcoming session (or a pro-rata portion thereof for the remainder of the current session, as applicable) at the time you first enroll your student. For subsequent sessions, we will automatically charge the method of payment you provided at the time of your student's first enrollment unless you specify another method of payment through your Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal account by 11:59 p.m. on the day prior to the automatic payment date we have specified for the upcoming session (to see specific upcoming automatic payment dates, see the section immediately below entitled "Session Dates, Holidays and Scheduled Closures." To see how to specify a different payment method, see the tab immediately to the right entitled "Payment Methods." PLEASE NOTE: Because we want to give you adequate time to make sure we are right for your family, we have established the fourteenth day of each session as our automatic payment date for the following session. Yet, because each of our sessions encompasses exactly four calendar weeks, the fourteenth day of each session will not fall on the same day every month. Please refer to the next section which appears immediately below (entitled "Session Dates, Holidays and Scheduled Closures), which contains a) our session dates for the remainder of 2023 and all of 2024, plus b) the automatic payment date for each upcoming session. So long as you have a student enrolled at Kentucky Swim Academy, it will be your responsibility to refer back to this section periodically so you can note impending automatic payment dates and prepare appropriately for each automatic payment. If you wish to withdraw one or more of your students prior to being charged for the upcoming session, change the number of classes in which your student will be enrolled for the upcoming session, or make other adjustments which may impact the amount of your tuition bill, please refer to the section entitled "Withdrawals" for specific instructions regarding what you must do to avoid being charged your existing tuition amount for the upcoming session on the next automatic payment date. You may reach that section by going to the main menu above and clicking "How To," then "Withdraw My Student" If a card or ACH transaction (based on the payment method you have specified in your Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal; see the next tab entitled "Payment Methods") is declined or returned to us for any reason, please know that we will do our best to work with you. Many of us have "been there" at least once - and we have no desire to pass judgment or penalize you. We will send you an email as soon as we receive the notice from your bank or card provider, and you will have seven days from the date we sent you that email to contact us and make alternative payment arrangements. If you don't contact us within those seven days, however, we won't have any choice but to cancel your student's enrollment for the next session - but you will still have the option to log in to your Parent Portal account and re-enroll your student in another class. The rationale behind our automatic payment rules is as follows: Before we open registration for the upcoming session to new students (on the fifteenth day of each session), we give priority to currently enrolled students who wish to continue on to the next session by "rolling over" the class lists from the current session into the next session (minus the names any students who have withdrawn from the next session). In order to know how many spaces we can make available to new students for the upcoming session, we must know how many existing students have paid in advance for that upcoming session. We believe that these rules constitute the fairest and most predictable means of protecting the priority of existing students while offering the greatest amount of opportunity to prospective students. Payment Methods When you first enroll your student in one of our classes through the Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal, you must specify at least one payment method. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. You may also choose to pay directly from your checking account via Automatic Clearing House (ACH) transfers (you will need your bank's routing number and your checking account number; both of which should appear at the bottom of any check associated with your account). We regret that we cannot accept personal checks or cash. If a third party wishes to pay your student's tuition, it is perfectly acceptable for them to enter their own payment method in your parent portal. Yet, it is important that you advise them that the card or account they provide could be charged on future automatic payment dates until you actively delete the payment information associated with their card or account from your Parent Portal. If you wish to change your preferred payment method, you must do so through your Parent Portal account by 11:59 p.m. on the day that precedes the next automatic payment date to avoid having your currently specified payment method charged on that date (see the section immediately below entitled "Session Dates, Holidays and Scheduled Closures" for upcoming automatic payment dates). You may specify a different payment method by logging into your Parent Portal account and clicking on "Billing and Payments" on the menu that appears at the top of the page. Then, click on "Saved Payment Methods" to the right of the "Current Balance" box, which will show the payment methods that you have previously saved. If you have more than one card saved and want to change which card we charge first, click "Make Primary" under the card that you want to become your new primary payment method and confirm your choice when the prompt asking you to do so appears. If you want to make a bank account your primary method of payment, click "Edit" under that bank account's listing, move the slider that appears next to "Make Default Payment Method" to the right, and then click "Save." If you have not yet entered a bank account and wish to do so, click the green "+" that appears to the left of your saved payment methods and choose "Bank Account." Enter the appropriate information and then move the slider that appears to "Make Default Payment Method" to the right, and click "Save." If you want to enter an additional card, click the green "+," choose "Credit/Debit Card" and enter your card information in the spaces provided. Please note that adding another card DOES NOT automatically make that card your primary payment method. You will need to click "Make Primary" after you enter your card information and click "Confirm Preauthorization" to save that payment method. Please be aware that when you agree to the legal document entitled "Tuition, Billing, and Payment Policies" (which you must do as part of creating your Parent Portal account prior to enrolling your student), you are giving us your ongoing permission to charge the card and/or bank accounts you specify for the initial tuition that is payable upon enrollment and all ongoing automatic payments as described herein. Refunds Kentucky Swim Academy does not provide refunds under any circumstances. We do, however, offer a liberal, no-excuse-necessary Makeup Procedures. No-Shows We know that an emergency or some other exigency or crisis might strike a parent, guardian, or family that recently enrolled a student in one of our classes; such that the student may not be able to attend class and the parent or guardian who enrolled that student might not have the time or ability to contact us - or sometimes, people get overwhelmed and simply forget. We understand - and we want to do whatever we can to help you obtain the benefit of the lessons you purchased when your student is finally able to join us. Thus, please remember that you can email us and schedule makeup lessons at any time that we have available during the calendar year that follows any lesson your student missed (for more details about our liberal, no-excuse-necessary makeup policy, see Makeup Procedures. We also hope that you will understand why we cannot hold a student's spot in any class once that student has missed two classes in succession and we haven't heard from the student or his/her parent or guardian (either via email at scheduling@kyswims.com or by phone at 859-475-1500) by 11:59 p.m. on the date of the second consecutive missed lesson. Our reason for canceling a student's enrollment in that particular class under such circumstances is that by the time a student has missed a second consecutive class, the automatic payment date for the upcoming session is fast approaching - and we simply will not place the burden of another session's tuition charge on a family that may already have more stress than it can bear. At the very least, we will not charge another session of tuition when a student and his/her parent or guardian have not yet had any opportunity to assess whether our instruction is right for that student. We will also close for a full class week in 2023 which encompasses Christmas Day 2023 (Monday, December 25 through Thursday, December 28), and for two full class weeks in 2024-25 that encompass Christmas Day 2024 and New Year's Day 2025 (Monday, December 23, 2024 through Thursday, January 2, 2025). In each of these cases, the applicable session (Session 2 of 2023 and Session 13 of 2024) will be extended for the number of class weeks we are closed and all weekly classes will still meet all four times. In the event of any such closure, we will send a notification email to the person who listed his or her email address under "Contact #1" on the Kentucky Swim Academy registration form; together with a notification text if that person has "opted-in" to text notifications from us. If your student has a lesson scheduled during the time period that the unplanned closure will last, we will follow up with an email that will contain the proposed makeup date(s) and time(s) for your student. Upon receipt of that email and text, you may a) Reply to that email with confirmation that your student can attend at the proposed makeup date(s) and time(s) or b) Send an email to makeups@kyswims.com indicating that your student cannot attend on the proposed makeup date and at the proposed makeup time, and we will work with you to the best of our ability to make alternative arrangements for your student. As a "general rule of thumb," Kentucky Swim Academy will be closed any day that the Fayette County Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. Makeup Procedures Kentucky Swim Academy offers liberal, no-excuse-necessary makeup procedures because we want you to obtain the value you paid for with your hard-earned money. We will always do our best to operate the Kentucky Swim Academy with our own respective experiences as cash-strapped parents in mind - and while we cannot provide you and your student with an unlimited ability to make up the classes you miss, we doubt that you will find a more flexible or a more consumer-friendly makeup policy at any other swim school. * Although you may record your student's absences in your Kentucky Swim Academy Parent Portal Account, we do not require you to do so; nor do we require you to provide a reason for your student's absence. Instead, simply send an email to makeups@kyswims.com @kyswims.com which identifies a) your student's name and b) the date and time of your student's missed class, and we will work with you to find a convenient time for a makeup class. * You will have one calendar year from the date of the missed lesson to schedule a makeup class. * We do urge you to request - and schedule - a makeup class as soon as possible after your student misses a class to make sure we can find you a suitable makeup time. Because we don't hold open specific dates and times for makeup classes, it may take us a degree of time to work something out for you - and the longer you wait, the higher the risk becomes that we won't be able to schedule a makeup class for your student before the one-year "window" expires. * Please note that sending us an email as directed above constitutes the only way to schedule a makeup lesson. Health Practices Particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, swim schools and other businesses where people regularly come into close contact with one another have the obligation to exercise great care in devising and enforcing policies that promote the health and safety of students, staff, and attending family members and guests. Of course, any activity that involves a swimming pool has its own unique set of practices and procedures upon which every participant's health and safety depends. Accordingly, we respectfully ask for your diligence in helping us monitor and enforce the following policies, practices, and procedures: * Swim Diapers. To help us avoid fecal accidents that can shut down our host facility's pool for as long as twenty-four hours, we ask that you make sure that your student wears a reusable diaper inside a disposable swim diaper if 1) your student is younger than three years old or b) he/she still has occasional "accidents." * Swim Caps. We require that your student wear a swim cap or a swim tie if the same is necessary to keep hair out of their face. * Eating. Please make certain that your student does not eat large amounts of food within two hours of their class; so as to reduce the chances of a vomiting or fecal incident that could close our facility's pool for as long as twenty-four hours. * Illness and Injury. Health regulations prohibit anyone from swimming who has had any diarrhea whatsoever within the previous twenty-four hours - so if your student fits into this category, please do not come to their scheduled lesson and email us to schedule a makeup lesson instead (per our liberal, no-excuse-necessary Makeup Procedures set forth in the section directly above). Likewise, please do not come to the scheduled lesson and email us for a makeup lesson if your student has experienced a fever or shown signs of any contagious illness within the previous twenty-four hours. Accordingly, our seven levels of instruction emphasize depth rather than breadth. Each level exposes students to four elemental skills: water safety, breath control, buoyancy, and propulsion; with each successive level introducing greater complexity and more comprehensive opportunities to implement and practice these four skills. Unit 1 EXPLORATION PRIMARY GOAL To replace any anxiety students might have with a healthy respect for water that will enable them to become – and remain – both comfortable and safe. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Develop the ability to enter and exit the pool safely and independently. Learn how to “fall in,” recover, and safely return to the side of the pool. * Breath Control. Hold one’s breath underwater for a minimum of five seconds and blow bubbles. * Buoyancy. With support and/or other assistance, float on one’s front and back for a minimum of five seconds. * Propulsion. Develop the ability to walk, run, and bounce in shallow water. * Demonstrate a comfort level with water splashed on one’s face and with one’s face submerged in water for a minimum of five seconds. Unit 2 FLOATING, GLIDING, AND FORM PRIMARY GOAL To develop a rudimentary understanding of how the human body can work in concert with the water – and then experience that principle in action. This level will introduce students to proper head and body positioning. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Understand a basic lifesaving skill: in order to help someone in trouble, one must stay safe - i.e., “reach, throw, and don’t go! Never, ever go into the water to attempt a rescue. * Breath Control. Hold one’s breath underwater for ten seconds. Then, breathe rhythmically while bobbing up and down in and out of the water while blowing more bubbles. * Buoyancy. Learn how to independently assume a “starfish” position (both prone and supine) with appropriate head placement. * Propulsion. Glide three yards using sculling and gentle kicking to maintain momentum in the water. Unit 3 GET YOUR KICKS PRIMARY GOAL To further refine the student’s rhythmic breathing skills while integrating both the front and back kick and developing a streamlined position. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Learn how to turn over while remaining in front float; thereby conserving energy and increasing one’s odds of survival if stranded in deep water. * Breath Control. Achieve ten vertical/standing bobs coupled with rhythmic breathing. Develop a greater ability to hold one’s breath and blow bubbles. * Buoyancy. Master the proper head and body placement for a streamlined position; thereby learning how to transform one’s natural buoyancy from a mere vehicle for floating into an engine for propulsion. * Propulsion. Develop the ability to kick effectively and efficiently for five yards in the streamlined position, utilizing the front kick from the hips and the propulsive phase of the “down kick” in concert with a level body position. Backkick from hip, propulsive phase coming on the up kick. Learn how to point toes and relax knees and ankles (with knees not breaking the surface of the water). Unit 4 A CALL TO ARMS PRIMARY GOAL To introduce the BLABT technique (body position, legs, arms, breathing, timing) and develop a rudimentary proficiency in front crawl and backstroke. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Learn how to tread water for one minute. * Breath Control. Hold breath for fifteen seconds. Achieve ten horizontal bobs. * Buoyancy. Practice the power of channeled buoyancy by “sliding and gliding” – or alternately pushing back from the wall and off the floor of the pool in order to travel back and forth as far as possible. * Propulsion. Practice a fast 6-beat “flutter kick.” Front crawl with arms utilizing the “push-pull” windmill style (with the stroke always beginning at the top), and swim five yards. * Practice a kneeling dive and then jump in (as practicable and safe depending on location). Swim five yards and then return to the side of the pool. Unit 5 FAR FROM BREATHLESS PRIMARY GOAL To achieve the major transition from rhythmic horizontal bobs to rotary breathing while expanding the student’s practical understanding of BLABT. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Develop the ability to tread water for two minutes and turn over while swimming. Practice bobbing in deeper water (as practicable and safe depending on location). * Breath Control Develop the ability to employ the rotary breathing technique without breaking stroke and without lifting one’s head. * Buoyancy. Continue to increase the distance of front and back glides from both the wall and the floor of the pool. * Propulsion.Swim ten yards using a streamlined kick from the front crawl and back crawl positions. * Learn how to execute a standing dive (as practicable and safe depending on location). Unit 6 GOING THE DISTANCE PRIMARY GOAL To develop the student’s ability to swim increasingly longer distances by reinforcing and encouraging the student’s ability to utilize BLABT on a regular basis. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Develop the ability to swim elementary backstroke for ten yards. * Breath Control Continued progress toward proper form and body and head alignment associated with rotary breathing. * Buoyancy. Learn the “jellyfish float” technique. * Propulsion. Execute a six-beat flutter kick from the front and the back. Swim the front crawl and the back crawl for twenty yards. * Learn how to retrieve objects in deep water utilizing surface dives (as practicable and safe depending on location). Unit 7 AND NOW, WHAT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR PRIMARY GOAL This level is designed to bring together everything the student has learned to date. The student will employ BLABT in learning two entirely new forms of propulsion, namely sidestroke and breaststroke. SKILLS FOCUS * Water Safety. Learn how to use side stroke as an essential technique for survival in the water. * Breath Control Develop the ability to breathe in as one pulls one’s arms down while one’s head rises above the surface of the water. Then learn how to exhale as one’s arms extend back out in front of one’s body. * Buoyancy. Tread water for four minutes. * Propulsion. Learn 1) the breaststroke kick (draw heels to rear (dorsiflex), turn feet out with one’s heels driving back in a circular motion, and then finishing in a streamlined position) and 2) the breaststroke arm motion (arms and hands pull around and downwards, with elbows tucked in and arms and hands stretching forward into a glide).
