St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN)—Preparations are underway for the 18th Caribbean Week
of Agriculture (CWA), scheduled for October 7-11, 2024, at the University of the
West Indies Open Campus in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Organised
by CARICOM, the event serves as a regional forum for addressing agricultural
issues and advancing sustainable practices.

This year’s theme, “Climate-Smart Agriculture for a Sustainable Future,” aligns
with CARICOM’s 25 by 2025 Initiative, which aims to reduce the Caribbean’s food
import bill by 25% by 2025. The focus of CWA 2024 will be on strengthening food
systems to withstand climate-related challenges.

Topics and Sessions

The event will feature a series of workshops and seminars addressing key areas
such as:

 * Climate resilience in agriculture.
 * Climate-smart fishing practices and sargassum management.
 * The role of youth in regional food systems.
 * Food security and nutrition.
 * Recovery efforts for women farmers after natural disasters like Hurricane
   Beryl.
 * Digital agriculture and technological advances.
 * Human resource development in the agricultural sector.

According to CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett, the event will focus on
climate change impacts and practical solutions for food security. The sessions
will explore technologies and strategies that can support agrifood systems’
adaptation to climate-related risks.

Coordinating Regional Agricultural Efforts

CWA 2024 will bring together stakeholders from the public and private sectors to
encourage investment in climate-smart agriculture and to support long-term
sustainability in regional food production systems.

Shaun Baugh, CARICOM’s Programme Manager for Agriculture and Agro-Industrial
Development, noted that the event will focus on collaboration to address
regional food and nutrition security.

Launches and Key Events

Several initiatives will be launched at CWA 2024, including the Comprehensive
Action on Climate Change (CACCI) Project by the Inter-American Institute for
Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Caribbean Tree-Planting Initiative by
the Agriculture Alliance of the Caribbean (AACARI).

A documentary titled “Roots of Resilience: Stories of Caribbean Women in
Agriculture,” produced by Helen’s Daughters, a Saint Lucia-based organisation,
will also debut at the event. The film will highlight the experiences of women
farmers in the region.

The week will also include a Trade Show and Expo promoting modern agricultural
technologies and agribusinesses, ministerial meetings, and a special session of
the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on Agriculture.

The Caribbean Week of Agriculture was established by the Inter-American
Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in 1999 to highlight the role of
agriculture in regional integration and development. The event provides a
platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas and develop strategies to improve
agriculture and rural life in the Caribbean.

CWA is organised in collaboration with CARICOM, the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development
Institute (CARDI), and other partners. It has been held annually since its
inception, with the most recent edition in The Bahamas in 2023 under the theme
“Accelerating Vision 25 by 2025.”
