We are excited to welcome Linda Johnson Rice, Chairman and CEO of Johnson
Publishing Company and former Chairman Emeritus of Ebony Media Operations, to
Albion's historic Bohm Theatre on Monday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. to help us honor
and celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the annual
MLK Convocation and Community Celebration. The event theme is “Shifting the
Cultural Climate Through the Study and Practice of Kingian Nonviolence.”

More than just a publication, EBONY Magazine captured the post-war optimism and
aspirational dreams of multiple generations of African Americans. Centering
narratives on a people with stories told by the people. So much so that from
1957 to 1958, Martin Luther King Jr. penned a monthly advice column called
“Advice for Living,” where magazine readers could ask King his thoughts. Timely
for the era, King responded to a myriad of questions from readers of the
magazine.

performances and exhibits at the link in our bio.
The weekend forecast calls for snow. ❄️

We only anticipate accumulation between a modest dusting to one inch, but 'tis
the season to remind everyone of how enchanting Albion is covered in snow.

WHAT A STUNNER! 💜💛
2023 in photos, continued…

7. Prof. Nels Christensen and students in his “Literature of the Great Lakes”
course are pictured with a handmade traditional wood and canvas canoe built for
his family. Christensen’s class was reading Holling Clancy Holling's
Paddle-to-the-Sea, a picture book that describes the journey of a toy canoe
through the Great Lakes watershed to the open sea. Cool fact: Holling Clancy
Holling’s parents are Albion alumni and he also attended for a few years.
8. Rapper MadeinTYO hypes the crowd at the annual Big Show at Goodrich Chapel in
April 2023, hosted by Union Board.
9. The Class of 2027 gathers on Kresge steps for their class photo in August.
10. Students reconnect during the fall 2023 Briton Bash, an annual fair to
explore clubs, organizations, departments, local businesses, and more.
11. Members of the Albion College volleyball team celebrate a 3-1 win over No. 9
Calvin University—the first win over a Top-10 ranked opponent in program history
and Albion's first over the Knights since 2001.
12. Albion men’s lacrosse knocks off Kalamazoo College, 22-10, in the MIAA
semifinals to advance to their 10th MIAA championship game.
13. Carli Kerns ’25 wins Albion's first-ever IHSA National Championship in Level
II Western Horsemanship.
2023, it's been real ✌️(part 1 of 2).

Pictured are a few milestones, memories, and more from another amazing year at
Albion College.

1. Robert Cornwell ‘23, assisted by classmate Angel Arguijo ’23, sounds the
class horn prior to the student speaker’s remarks at the 2023 spring
commencement ceremony.
2. Wayne Webster, joined by Pete Loch '23, throws out the first pitch at the
baseball game versus Olivet College after being announced publicly as Albion
College’s 18th President, April 4, 2023.
3. Profs. Nicolle Zellner and Carrie Menold (interviewed by local NBC affiliate)
were selected in June to join a NASA research team for lunar studies at the
Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute. They are part of CASA Moon,
one of five teams analyzing samples from lunar visits to understand the moon's
history. The team secured $1.5 million annually for five years, offering
opportunities for Albion students in NASA-funded research and public outreach.
4. Albion students paws'd and relaxed this fall with special therapy animals
from Healing Hooves Helping Paws.
5. Students and families take a break during Move-In Day this August.
6. Students in Prof. Allison Harnish’s "Nature and Society" class pose with
macroinvertebrate collectors assembled using 3-D-printed biodegradable frames
wrapped in birchbark and tied with artificial sinew. In partnership with the
Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi tribe, Harnish, Prof. Abigail Cahill,
and students have been designing, assembling, and deploying the collectors and
then analyzing their contents to compare the abundance and diversity of
macroinvertebrates in sites with and without wild rice or manoomin, an aquatic
rice native plant that was nearly eradicated by settler activities.
Juan G. Rodriguez '24, a senior English major and political science minor from
eastern Texas, reflects on the importance of his Northern relationships in his
journey as a Brit in this beautiful Opinion piece in the Pleiad, Albion
College’s student news source. From his work as features editor to his
connection with friends living in the “Sustainability House,” Juan discovered
his Albion family with time and intention.

As he begins the transition to life beyond Albion, he beautifully proclaims: “As
difficult as it gets to navigate these stressful senior semesters, I’ve [got]
the stars above to guide me to safety. I might not know where I am, but I know
where my friends are... My days are brighter when I bask in the light that my
friends emit. Consider me thankful for the fact that this campus allows me to
share space with each and every one of them.”

Juan’s introspective piece implores us all to hold our chosen community close to
us. Consider Albion College thankful that you chose us, Juan!

Donna Avina '24, an anthropology major from Los Angeles, CA, this weekend
unveiled her exhibit along with Associate Professor of Anthropology Allison
Harnish titled, "Ritual Remnants: Artifacts from the Ancient City of
Teotihuacán" at the Art Center of Battle Creek.

The exhibit, which runs through March 30, is the culmination of Donna's summer
Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
(FURSCA) project and Prentiss M. Brown honors thesis, where she spent a year
cataloging, researching, and photographing the collection. The exhibit includes
38 artifact shards from Teotihuacán, an ancient Mesoamerican city that was
established around 100 BC and mysteriously abandoned around 600 AD.

If you're in the area, show our Brit some love and visit this amazing exhibit!
