The first one in the laundry room went through a wall so I found a cat access portal for my kitties to gain entry. I put a shelf there to help control litter tracking. The second one (enclosure still under construction was place in an entry way. Yes an entry way. My amazing dad build a custom cabinet with a pull out and we had the plumber come put in the drain and water lines. It was very simple with our open basement. We are planning a third one when the upstairs bathroom remodel goes underway at which time we will be a litter free household! It has been a game changer for our busy home and my cats overall health. Tips! Cat genie fits in a 24” base cabinet with a drawer but you will have to pull out the drawer to change the cartridge. Not a major deal since it isn’t frequent that has to occur. It put in a slider drawer like we did with the last genie. Also the cabinet helps mute the sound of the genie doing its thing! It’s not terribly loud to begin with but you definitely know it’s running. Shelves help catch the plastic pellets. For my new on I plan on building a slotted shelf with a catch basin. The cat genie litter mats are great if you don’t have a trash panda like I do that drags off toys and rugs (spilling litter all over the house) These rugs are also huge. I would like to see a smaller format that can have Velcro attached to a shelf or step. I ended up not using my rug at all due to my trash panda’s infatuation with it. If you are smelling poo post cleaning then it’s time to do a deep cleaning. The more cats you have the more deep cleanings need to be done. Or if you have a cat with IBS (like me) then use the deep cleaning cartridge more frequently. I also prefer the scented cartridges (as do my cats). The un-scented ones just don’t smell clean and fresh. It’s important to know that the naysayers may either not be aware of the app settings or are too cheap to run CatGenie several times a day. Per the app, I was able to monitor how many times my boys entered the CatGenie. I set the cycles to clean every 6 hrs rather than after every time they exited. The cleaning cycles are a little loud so take some time getting used to. They also last 45 minutes. I’m sure you’d think that could use some improvement but I didn’t invent this appliance so what do I know? We don’t have an issue with smells or clogs and I’m sure it’s due to only using this for a few weeks and the amount of cleaning cycles. Four times a day no matter what. Set thru the app. Done and done. The only downfall I’ve experienced with CatGenie is the granules. If your cats tend to spread litter around your house, this appliance won’t solve your problems. What will? Invest a few bucks in one of those cat litter trapping mats, it works wonders. You can simply pick up the mat and empty it back into the CatGenie. Last but not least, do yourself a favor and just buy the replacement granules right out of the gate. Our third cat is a clean freak and gets vocal when his litter mates have made a mess of the box. He watches the machine do its job, then moves on with his day. We had a little trouble at first getting used to the system. There are times where we have to pause the machine during a cycle and help it by scooping out the smaller pieces of poop that are too small or too soft for the arm to scoop on its own. This happens more so with our older cat. Once we figured out when and what was happening, it was easy to solve. It took awhile longer to get two of the cats used to the sound of the machine running. I set it to manual mode and only ran it when I was there to keep the cats distracted enough to not run away when it started up. They eventually got used to it and that was so longer a problem. The only thing that does happen now and again is someone will need to use the box while it is running a cycle. It's usually the older cat. He can't hold it. He has had a few accidents near the box while it is running. The three cats seem to have figured out a schedule among themselves and it has become less of a problem. I also keep a small plastic bin of pellets available in the garage in case I need to give them an emergency litter pan. That is simple to clean and not often an issue. All in all, this is a great setup. I'm very happy with it. We have it set up in our guest bathroom for now. It drains out through the shower drain. It was simple to set up. It does warm up the bathroom during the drying cycle, and having the domed top on it cuts down on the heat. It can be noisy during the draining part of the cycle, but I don't have a problem with that. I'm not scooping a litter box all day long, my house doesn't smell like a cat box, I'm not finding litter in my bed, and the cats aren't leaving poop/pee prints each time they use the box. Much, much better. I'm super happy with the CatGenie. I'd recommend it to anyone with cats. I'm not spending near the amount I was on litter. It is worth it. Very worth it.
