Rio Hotel & Casino (KSNV)
1

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Ed Fan says it's not the trip he expected.

Visiting Las Vegas last week for the SEMA trade show, only to become the victim
of a crime.

"I could have slept in my car and been safer," says Fan, describing a
frightening experience inside his hotel room at the Rio.

"Around 5:15, 5:20 in the morning, I heard a sound, I woke up, the front door
light was on," he explains. "We never sleep with the lights on, so I went to
turn it off and noticed the door was open. I walked out and saw a guy down the
hall. I think he heard me and then left by an exit door."

Fan says without his glasses on, he didn't get much of a description of the man.

However, he quickly realized what was gone—$300 in cash and his gun. Items he
had not stored in the room safe.

"No, the safe was broken," says Fan. "It didn't have a handle."

"If the safe malfunctions, call security or maintenance to either repair it or
replace it," advises Charles Barry, with Charles H. Barry & Associates, a
security consultant for the hospitality industry.

He says hotels can electronically review when a particular room door has been
opened or if it was never shut tight in the first place.

He says there are simple tricks for protecting yourself from a hotel room
burglary.

For example, immediately place the Do Not Disturb sign on the door and turn on
the TV so it appears the room is occupied if you leave.

While you're sleeping, try this:

"You can take an object of some type, usually the ironing board, and place it
against the door," says Barry. "If anybody tries to come in, they have to knock
over that ironing board, and that will alert you somebody is in the room."

And Fan's case isn't that unusual.

Strip hotel room burglaries

In June, Robert Black was arrested for burglarizing multiple rooms at the Paris
Hotel.

Security officers set up a "bait room" to catch their suspect in the act.

He's since been indicted on 13 counts, including burglary, unlawful use of a
hotel key, and theft.

But Barry says in many cases, rooms are chosen with a simple door push, a
criminal checking for doors that have been left ajar.

"In today's environment, you will have perpetrators walking halls pushing on
doors," says Barry. "That's why it's so important to, at least when you get in
that room, secure both locks on the door."

While Fan believed his door was firmly shut, Rio security told him otherwise.

The property released a statement to News 3 which reads:

"We are aware an incident involving a guest occurred last Thursday night at the
Rio. We are working closely with law enforcement officials and have no further
comment pending completion of the investigation. The safety and security of our
guests and employees remains of the utmost priority."

"I told him (security employee) we could have been murdered, things could have
happened to us," says Fan. "And he said, well, at least you're not dead. You're
alive."

Fan says the Rio did comp his room and food, and he will come back to Las Vegas.
But he's hoping to raise awareness so other visitors are not ripped off.
