The RBC Heritage Is Here!

WHAT'S ON TAP: RBC HERITAGE

A nice chaser after the superbly tasty shot of Masters excellence last week

By Alex Lauzon from the “Course of Life” podcast

Well, that was awesome.

As we all collect our breaths from a week at Augusta National that brought the
UNREAL return of Tiger Woods just a year after his near-deadly accident and
nearly amputating his leg, it’s hard to understate what we just witnessed as
golf fans.

He returned triumphantly to play four rounds and bless us with Sunday red at
Augusta one more time, something I’m not sure we ever thought we would see
again.

Once the Tiger storyline faded, the birth the next dominant star in Scottie
Scheffler was officially born, capping his red-hot start to 2022 with a major
championship victory in impressive fashion.

While The Masters hangover is completely natural, most of the PGA Tour who were
couch-ridden with us, all watching the action at Augusta, are probably licking
their chops in anticipation if the next event: The RBC Heritage.

WHO IS TEEING IT UP?

While many of the world’s best take the week off to regroup, top players like
Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Cameron Smith all come off solid showings at
Augusta to peg it this week at the Heritage. Jordan Spieth looks to bounce back
off a Friday trunk slam at The Masters, and Stewart Cink defends his 2021 title
here fresh off an electric hole in one moment at hole no. 16 this past week.

POINT A TO POINT B GOLF

The RBC Heritage has a unique history of champions, drama, and breakthrough
winners in recent years. What sets Harbour Town apart from most PGA Tour venues
is its playability, for lack of a better term. It’s one of the shorter tracks on
tour and it presents the chance for a cagy veteran like Brian Gay or Cink to
rout the field, an unknown like Satoshi Kodaira to capture his debut win or for
a ball-striking Webb Simpson to “fairway and green” us to death. Positioning
each shot is at a premium, as Harbour Town can present some tight spots for
golfers. Point to point golfers and solid iron and wedge players have to be
considered in your lineups.

THAT LIGHTHOUSE THOUGH

Harbour Town golf links is a throwback venue of sorts. It’s been a PGA Tour
mainstay for decades and is very comfortable following up The Masters just a few
hours down the road. The course plays at just 7,100 yards and is a public that
track that actually feels reasonable to even hacks like us watching at home. No
600-yard par 5’s or absurd yardages to be found here. It’s a waterside venue
that flashes to shots of yachts pulling out of the Harbor, Palmettos in full
bloom and lots of sand to catch errant shots. The track ends with that ICONIC
red and white lighthouse positioned directly behind the 18th green.

OKAY: MY PICKS

I’m prefacing my weekly picks based on exactly what I value the most. With every
play I make, I’m always taking into account these factors BUT this week in the
Low Country – leaning into some analytics might pay off big in pool play.

1. Who’s hot and trending – recent high finishes, top 10 streaks and consistent
play are never a bad thing.

2. Horses for courses – players love certain courses and course familiarity and
experience are invaluable in a field of the world’s best.

3. What the numbers tell you this week – while I’m far from analytical, there’s
always a tournament darling or two scattered across the golf talk stratosphere
that stuns on paper.

4. Intangibles – while this allows for theater of the mind, there’s a mysterious
optimism surrounding that feels “due” or if the price looks just right for
buying.

With those principles laid out, here’s a few players to keep an eye an this week
that could very well be worth a roster spot at The Masters:

THE SIXPACK OF PICKS

(Wanna start a PGA Pick-X pool with your friends? You do! Learn more here! Or,
if you're looking to start your own PGA One-and-Done pool, check those out here)
(Hint: the main difference between the two is how many players you'll pick each
week)

1: Matthew Fitzpatrick – The pesky Englishman comes off of a decent showing at
Augusta, but more importantly his point-to-point “carve a course up” strategy
should be on full display this week. It’s a good fit for Harbour Town.

2: Shane Lowry: Hard not to hop on board the Irishman’s bandwagon after that
loveable performance at The Masters. He played well there and he’s played well
at the Heritage with top 10’s in his past at this track. Ride the Guinness wave.

3: Webb Simpson: I have a long-standing auto bet on Webb in any parts of the low
country or Carolinas. He seems to thrive in this part of the country and has
made a killing on shorter “ball striker’s paradise” tracks like Harbour Town in
his decades on Tour.

4: Abraham Ancer: the 2020 runner-up in this event is statistically primed for
this venue (based on his fairways and greens numbers) to have a big week at the
RBC.

5: Kevin Kisner: Ain’t no hobby fellas – despite his lackluster weekend and
Saturday pairing with Tiger, Kisner comes in with form off of a second-place
finish at the Match Play, and a past runner-up finish here in 2015.

“Tier 6 Flyer”: If you like the “horses for courses logic, 2016 champion Branden
Grace is in the field. Maybe a trip down memory lane helps him regain form and
make a surprise appearance on the leaderboard this weekend.

My RYP One-and-Done Pick: Matthew Fitzpatrick

THE DEETS

Where to watch: You’ll find coverage on Golf Channel, ESPN+, and CBS all
weekend. Time to hide The Masters app for another 51 weeks.

Why to watch: As we drown our Masters hangover, The Heritage is an easy pillow
to land on with coastal vibes and opportunity for lesser-known players to strike
gold.

What to eat: Shrimp and Grits, Boiled Peanuts, and that Azalea cocktail we kept
seeing at Augusta.

Purse: $8 Million

Winner's Share: $1.44 Million
