Every year there are millions of reported incidents of child abuse. Child abuse is a unspeakable crime against those who cannot protect themselves, and for many help can come too late. Welcome to Wings For Children, the site devoted to child abuse. Here you will find information on preventing child abuse, databases for missing children and sex offender registries. There is our “Angel Wings” program, created to help abused children reach destinations across America, and links to other child abuse prevention sites. Angel Wings transports sick and terminally ill children by privately owned aircraft and pilots for treatment. We are an all volunteer organization. Wings for Children has neither charged for any service or expense, nor have there ever been any paid staff. Imagine a world where child abuse and neglect does not exist. We would be overjoyed if Wings for Children was not needed, but until then. Our mission is clear… Founded in Feb. 1978 NEED HELP? Don't wait start the process of getting help now! We are not beholding to the parents, other family members, organizations or agencies; and often work with the courts for the benefit of abused, neglected, abandoned children. In that regard, we often try to get the reporter to make the report directly with Social Services or Law Enforcement; but if they are reluctant, we will make the report. Often, we find that we get inquiries from family members, neighbors, teachers and the like. As the childs’ advocate we do our best to see that there is a proper investigation and share information with the agency or law enforcement. However, it is not our job to investigate. We do remain with the case, often throughout criminal process (if that is involved), family court, guardians and other agencies, until a conclusion. We object to inmate probation and parole, in some cases and have been very successful keeping the perpetrators in prison. We prepare detailed information about their crime and present it to the Parole Board along with testimony and sometimes other witnesses. We have never charged for any services, or expense on anything we have handled. We are totally volunteer. LEGISLATION In 1974, I began a grass roots effort to draft the Child Protection Act and the Criminal Sexual Conduct Code. Both laws were passed in 1977, making dramatic changes to the law. For that work, I was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 1977 by the S C Legislature. Other laws that we were very active in: Termination of Parental Rights; Uniform Child Custody Act; and Sex Offender Registry. In addition, we participated in various amendments over the past 35 years to these laws. I often testified at various hearings regarding these laws. In the 1980's, I worked with Senator Strom Thurmonds office to establish the Center for Missing and Exploited Children; and later the S C Missing and Exploited Children’s office. EDUCATION Often we speak with statewide groups, schools, day cares, all types of civic organizations, by request. This community work is ongoing. At some of these meetings, we have received awards for our work. COLLABORATION Always. On a local, county, statewide, and sometimes national level. It takes all of that to help children; and much more than a village. In addition, the faces of these organizations and agencies as well as other resources are constantly changing. We have to stay on top of that in order to expedite issues that these children face. Often, we follow the children and their families through many changes; and that brings us in contact with even more people, including new sets of guidelines. As an example, we work with spouse abuse shelters; treatment and foster care facilities, and sometimes nursing homes where children have been placed for rehabilitation and treatment after abuse. Once we began Angel Flights in 1993, we work with a lot of hospitals across the U S arranging missions to transport children for treatment or to return home. NATIONAL We have worked on cases in most states in the US. Because of our location, we have a lot of activity in South Carolina; but the border states as well. As an example; in one trip to Texas we were hands on in cases from Odessa, Midlands, Paris and Sherman, including cases of abuse, neglect and missing children. Also, we get referrals from National organizations. Most National organizations do not directly work on reports and cases; consequently we get a lot of referrals.
