Emine Ozsoy was walking on a downtown platform at the Lexington Ave.-E. 63rd St. station when she was attacked around 6:05 a.m. Sunday, police said. Emine Ozsoy (GoFundMe.com) The Turkish immigrant who lives in Jackson Heights, Queens, suffered severe head and spinal injuries for which she underwent two lengthy surgeries, according to Nadim Ozsoy, 46, whose cousin used to be married to the victim. She’s been given a 10% chance of ever walking again. “She broke her neck and spine. Also the ribs broke maybe,” said Nadim Ozsoy. “I’m sorry for her. I hope she’s going to be OK.” Police released images of a suspect the say pushed a 35-year-old woman into a subway train as it was moving through a station on the Upper East Side, causing her to suffer severe spinal injuries. (NYPD) The assailant came up from behind Ozsoy and shoved her into a departing E train running on the F line due to repair work. Her head struck the moving train. Medics rushed Ozsoy to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, where she remained in critical condition Monday. One surgery lasted 12 hours, her relative said. She has not been able to remember much about the incident, cops said. The attacker ran off toward the Second Ave. exit and has not been caught. The victim was walking on a downtown platform at the Lexington Ave.-E. 63rd St. station when she was attacked about 6:05 a.m. Sunday, police said. (Theodore Parisienne/for New York Daily News) “Why he did it?” the former cousin-in-law exclaimed. “What is the reason?” Cops released surveillance footage of the suspect on the platform and asked the public’s help identifying him and tracking him down. He was described as between 30 and 40, about 5-feet-6 and having a light complexion. Transit crime in April dropped nearly 7% from last year, according to the most recent NYPD statistics, but high-profile crimes in the underground system over the past few years have left many riders leery of the subway. In January 2022, Deloitte analyst Michelle Go, 40, died under the R train in the Times Square station after being shoved from behind by a 61-year-old homeless man with a history of mental illness. The man has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. About a year later, on the Upper West Side at the 96th St.-Broadway station, two homeless men got in a fight and were ejected from the No. 2 train at the stop. The argument continued, however, and one of the men, Andre Boyce, 28, threw his victim in a headlock and then tossed him onto the track bed, where he hit his head and died from the impact, according to police. Boyce was charged with manslaughter. The 66-year-old owner of a tax services business was waiting on the platform when he was confronted by Corey Walcott. “I just pass him [and] he says, ‘I’m going to kill you,’” Augustin recalled around the time of the incident. “I don’t know him! He doesn’t know me!” Augustin tried to escape but he was hurled to the tracks, landing on his right side. He was able to protect his head with his right hand — a reflex he credited to studying karate as a child. More recently, homeless man Jordan Neely, 30, died after Long Island Marine Daniel Penny, 24, put him in a chokehold on the F train in the Broadway-Lafayette station, according to authorities. Penny’s lawyers say he was acting in self-defense. Neely’s death has once again touched off a debate about safety in the city transit system. Subway ridership has inched back up, but is still far below prepandemic levels. The average daily ridership last Wednesday was just above 4 million riders, compared with 5.5 million on average during 2019.
