Tried 2 of these. First one was sent back as it woudn’t work. Kept saying bumper
stuck and move to a flat surface. Excited when I received my second one just to
have it do the same thing! When it looked like it was going to work it moved in
slow jerky movements. Don’t waste your time or money on this

If you could just see my face when ever anyone asks me about my Roomba, that
would say it all. I wake up in the morning happier then ever before, my floors
are already vacuumed!!! Half of my chores are done!! My Roomba has her own name,
and learns more every run. Plus they are alway upgrading the software to do more
amazing things. She is so worth it, it doesn’t look like two cat, a dog, four
adults, three kids, a bird, snake and friends are always running thru the
house…I have time to do my hair and makeup in the morning now.

10/25 update : Mapping worked out finally. The navigation of this thing leaves a
LOT to be desired. I put it in a nice out of the way spot next to the dining
room table. Stupid thing insists on going through the dining room area to get to
the kitchen. I set up room dividers to make the home base part of the kitchen
and it STILL insists on going through the dining room table. Also, ti seems to
need plenty of room once it leaves the docking station or it decides its stuck
(2 feet from anything) and returns home. Makes me wonder why I spent that much
money!
Moved the home base and wound up having to do a complete remap. Hope it works.
The first one received worked pretty well. Made a complete map and I created
rooms and jobs from that map. It died after about a month. iRobot sent a new
unit and since then it has all been downhill.
Before it finally was able to create a complete map it created three. Every
mapping run seemed to decide that a new map was in order and none was complete.
FINALLY it created a complete map and all was well for a brief while. Now, it
has decided that to go from home to kitchen it has to go the long way around and
inevitably gets stuck and returns home. It moves around for a few minutes or so
and then quits. I had to literally pick it up and place it in the kitchen.
Pausing the job and physically putting it anywhere else along the path to the
kitchen and it decided that was the area to vacuum. At least it knew what
section of the map it was in. Finally placed it in the kitchen and it began to
vacuum the kitchen area, the job that I initially started. No idea if it will be
able to get home. Hopefully that will correct the map.
By the way, it gets stuck as often as it actually completes a job.
All in all, performance is frustrating to say the least and for the amount of
money iRobot is asking and the cost of consumables (bags, filters, etc) very
poor value for the money. Great vacuum (good brushes, strong suction), LOUSY
navigation.

My wife has been much happier with this than I have, needless to say. It does a
reasonable job. It has problems vacuuming in front of the refrigerator, and in
corners, so you still need to help it. It spends forever going around chairs, so
every time it runs, I have to move all the chairs out of its zone. One year with
it, and I have spent a couple of hundred on new brushes, vacuum bags and
brushes. Between this and the Braava, I could just about hire a house keeper.
It is much noisier than when we got it. I hope it lasts.
The mapping is all messed up, it has rooms that don’t exist. I mean, like going
out into the yard or something. Fortunately you can put dividers and name rooms,
and tell it to never vacuum those fictitious rooms. Support had me run it in
mapping mode and it took about 12 hours, stopping to recharge, and was still all
wrong. It gets stuck in corners and all kinds of places that messes it up. It
says it continues to learn as it goes, but one year into it, and it still
doesn’t have a couple of rooms that it continues to miss. I’ve been a GIS
professional for thirty years, and this is kindergarten stuff.
It is not very smart/efficient. I have a hallway, it goes back and fourth fifty
times when it could go the length of the hall like four times and be done. It
also has a software problem with remembering scheduling. I have re-entered
schedules many many times. Just this week it lost them again, this is after a
software update that supposedly was to fix that specific problem. I have
relented to only entering the three times a week schedule for the kitchen and
manually having to tell it to do other rooms in the house.

At first I bought the Shark, but after three passes to map my home I became
certain that it was never going to do so. It would find a room and make one
sweep and then leave. See the first pic showing the map that it created after
the three learning passes. I decided to return it for a full refund without
question from Amazon.
Then I decided to try another robovac so I ordered this Roomba S9+. Of course it
was more than 2x the cost, but the Roomba kills it! See pic #2 showing the
Roomba map after ONE pass. My house is 3600sf and Roomba's spec says it can only
handle ~2000sf so I was surprised that it has mapped so well in my larger house.
It is totally amazing with its ability to vacuum close to the edges of the walls
and especially the corners from the S9+ model. It is so cool to tell Alexa to
"tell roomba to clean my office" and watch as she beeps and drives off the
charging pedestal and heads for my office. There's only one room in my whole
house she hasn't found yet and I'm not sure how to make her find it so maybe
I'll call tech-support for that. I think the Roomba S9+ (and likely the i7+) are
absolutely amazing!
Updated after the map had been created six days after my Roomba was 'born'. My
S9 now can't get out of her charger room! She throws communication errors within
5-10 minutes of Clean all startup. Two calls to Roomba tech support and now I
have a new S9 on order from them. They want to replace the whole Roomba and
offered me an extra 2 years of warranty if I would agree. They acted as if this
was a known hardware problem. Now my new Roomba shows on BACK-ORDER so I have no
idea when the replacement will arrive. Now I have to re-create the house map
again, which took many hours. I've dropped my rating to a 3 for now, if I don't
get resolution soon it will go lower.
I wish I kept my original box because I think I would return the S9 back to
Amazon. This thing cost $1100 and I have spend countless hours trying to make it
work. If I invested those same hours vacuuming with my old vacuum my house would
be clean for six months. This thing is cool but not practical or effective.
