Date: May 13, 2024Author: maverickats 5 Comments Daughter 1 went to University, was a straight A+ student in Economics and ancient civilizations. Daughter 2 realised, while being intelligent, she had a different sort of intelligence than that required of University. She also realised going there would scam her of her money and that she would be wasting her time. Instead she got a job as a receptionist at a Vets, then moved onto a Real Estate Agency front office and did some of their web site stuff. From there she moved to a web site and SEO marketing company and rose up to head customer relations, marketing combined with ensuring the customer got what they were paying for. Her friend through high school went to University and spent 3 or 4 years getting a degree in English and Maori. Daughter 2 announced to the family she wanted to be a policewoman. She eventually passed the physical and HR department and went to Police college at Porirua. She qualified and has been on the front line for about 6 months. In that six months she has been tooled up with a Glock about 3 times to make arrests of violent and dangerous people, some of whom were more dangerous to themselves. She has been in a fight in Cuba mall attempting to arrest a violent offender and luckily only had her uniform ripped. She has been on a road block where a shot gun wielding person ran that block and they were ordered not to pursue, and in another where they had to jump out of the way of a guy running another road block. I am sure there are plenty more adventures that I have not heard of. She relies on her superiors and her big brawny buddies to protect her. She is 25 and earns $54,000 pa. Her good friend is also 25, and admits to my daughter that her degree was a waste of time, works for a Govt Department and earns $120,000. My daughter can barely pay her rent, most of the cops senior to her have families and are struggling to pay their living expenses. The current Police Commissioner is on a salary in excess of $700,000, while Mark Mitchell Minister of Police and his bud is on close to $300,000. Most judges I suspect are on north of $650,000 easily, while most desk officers in the Dept of Justice will be on great money too. The most danger that Luxon and Seymour have faced in their lives are angry paper clips. Makes you wonder where the countries priorities lie. Next time you call the cops just remember the people protecting you are badly unpaid and their wage claim has been sent to arbitration. Seems like the top dogs didnt know how to fight the corner of their employees. Oh, by the way the police have a recruitment and retention problem, always a sign of poor management at the top. And in case you were wondering about my daughter, she absolutely, absolutely loves her job, and admitted she wanted to be a cop ever since one came to their primary school. TH says: May 13, 2024 at 7:05 pm $54,000 does not seem much for what she does, and as you say, it must mean she struggles with rent and such. Yet another reason so many Gen-Z’rs remain living at home with Mum and Dad, something totally foreign to the Boomers and Gen-X. Reply 2. Roy Baldman says: May 13, 2024 at 8:28 pm Interested in Police Pay I looked it up. During your 20 weeks training at the Royal NZ Police College, you’ll be paid: Annual Salary: $52,056.56Superannuation subsidy: $5,301.44Insurance subsidy: $208.00 Total per year: $57,566.00So thats before Graduation. Then I see Average Police BASE Salary $69,528.So not sure where the $54,000 fits in. Reply 1. maverickats says: May 13, 2024 at 8:47 pm Oops $57,000, my bad As she doesnt know Iven written the article I can question her in more detail, she would taser me if she did. I understand they are probation for 2 years and I see your comment is based around the word “average” which of course implies overs and unders to make an average. Reply 3. Uncoffined says: May 14, 2024 at 8:29 am My kids are at the age where they starting to leave school. Things have changed a lot since I was their age (1980’s) Universities are now mostly woke factories, The traditional ones (Auckland, Canterbury, Victoria, Otago, Massey) aren’t what they used to be. Auckland is full of woke students, probably enabled by the their tutors Massey once banned Don Brash from speaking The days when these fine institutions simply set up kids for life in a professional career are gone. The trades are still available, but are now relegated for ‘dumb’ people that dont do well in academia. This is a shame, because the trades are almost as essential as farmers. We have a shortage of trades people, which is ‘fixed’ somewhat by importing immigrants with those skills. Reply 1. TH says: May 14, 2024 at 8:48 am Well it looks like it’s beginning to turn in the USA, according to the WSJ: > Long beset by a labor crunch, the skilled trades are newly appealing > to the youngest cohort of American workers, many of whom are choosing > to leave the college path. Rising pay and new technologies in fields > from welding to machine tooling are giving trade professions a > face-lift, helping them shed the image of being dirty, low-end work. > Growing skepticism about the return on a college education, the cost of > which has soared in recent decades, is adding to their shine. The question is whether NZ is going to be using those new technologies in the trade fields or whether we’re just going to continue to focus on labour. And that’s the productivity problem I wrote about yesterday. Reply LEAVE A COMMENT CANCEL REPLY Δ Search Search COMMENTS 1.
