POST #10 TESTING THE WATER – PART 2

To attempt to get an idea of how successful QR Codes would be and to see if they
would actually be scanned by the Public, Jack and Myself carried out a short
experiment to see how well QR Codes perform when placed in random Locations
around Lincoln. To measure this, we set up a new blog on Blogger, that allowed
us to monitor the statistics and audience for the website. This would allow us
to check how many views we had during certain timeframes and what devices that
audiences were using to scan the Codes.

We printed out 60 QR Codes simply with a caption of ‘Scan Me’ above the Code to
see if people would be interested enough to stop at the Location and scan the
Code with their Mobile Phones.

We wanted to see how this went over the course of 48 hours, this would give
enough time to hopefully build a decent set of statistics and results that allow
us to see certain trends such as the Operating System that the user’s phone is
based upon and the Browser that they are viewing the QR Code on.

We expected to get around 20 people to scan the QR Codes, giving us about a 1 in
3 return on all of them that we printed and placed. We also presumed that iPhone
would be the most dominant operating system. If these were true then it would
make this research much more successful.

After 48 hours we took screenshots of the Page Stats and found that we had 31
people scanned our Codes, (1 of the 32 we actually got was ourselves testing the
QR Code worked okay) this was a much better result than we expected, meaning
that over half of the QR Codes that we placed were scanned. Our prediction of
having iPhone as the most dominant Operating System also was true as we found
that 56% of people scanned the QR Code with an iPhone, which is actually the
most difficult Phone to scan QR Codes on due to the fact that it is not a native
feature built into the Phone and you have to have a Third-Party Application
installed onto your Phone in order to actually recognise the Code. We wanted
iPhone to be the most dominant simply because it is the Platform that we are
actually developing for.

We didn’t stop monitoring the results just after 48 hours, we have kept the
Codes around Lincoln and the blog has now hit 51 views after another 24 hours.
Showing that another 20 people scanned the Code. On average, we are hitting just
over 15 views a day despite the lack of promotion. Whilst we will keep
monitoring the results to see if trends continue, the actual experiment finished
after 48 hours.

Another fact is that the QR Codes had no Promotion whatsoever, we didn’t ask
people to scan them and we did not publicise it on Social Networking sites in
order to get more views. The people that scanned our App were unaware of the
reason that they were scanning the Code for. So if we actually had some
publicity based around the QR Codes, so that people knew what they were for and
if we actually designed the Code into a layout that represented our App and
featured our logo then people would definitely be more inclined to scan our QR
Code, simply because they would actually know what it was for and there would be
no fear of not knowing where the QR code could take them.

The experiment was overall a success with the results being a lot better than we
originally expected when thinking of the idea. We will continue to develop for
the iPhone and using QR Codes because we now have evidence that it works well in
Lincoln.

POST #7 TESTING THE WATER – PART 1

On the Feb 13th we decided to market research how succesful QR Codes are in
attracting people to them and people’s level of engagement with them with no
publicity attached to them.
This research was created by creating a QR code on qrcode.kaywa.com. and linking
the code to a blog webpage. The code was simply placed  place on a piece of
paper 10cm x 10cm with the words SCAN ME on it. We then created 60 documents
like this and then we placed them around the University of Lincoln and the Main
High Streets of Lincoln.

This QR code would then link the scanner to a blog webpage.

On the blogs admin page it would give us a reading of:
What hardware the scanner used to accessed the code on
When they accessed the QR code
How many people scanned in total the QR code in total
Which web browser they accessed the blog page from

This research programme would hopefully give us a clear indication to and
audience interaction with this form of digital media. This experiment is  still
currently taking place for a further 24 hours of a 48 hour research
programme after that time we will be posting the results of the test and our
analysis of the test on the blog.

Lincolopy Costings

This week we have taken a walk around Lincoln and explored potenal locations
that will appear on the Lincolopy game. These places have been chosen in ranking
of status within the city not popularity, this continues the theme/concept of
Monopoly.
