For example, we know steel is one of the most robust and most used materials
within the construction of buildings. Depending on the ‘loading scheme’, the
critical temperature of steel will vary from 350℃ – 750℃. 

 * At 300℃, the strength of steel becomes compromised
 * At 400℃, the strength of steel decreases by 60%
 * At 550℃ - 650℃ is the critical temperature for steel; at this temperate, any

9. HOW DOES INTUMESCENT PAINT WORK?

 * Intumescent paint is applied to any element of the interior or exterior of a
   building.
 * Under the intense heat and pressure from a fire, the Intumescent paint
   coating will chemically react to temperatures exceeding 120℃. Releasing a
   vapour.
 * This vapour carbonates and solidifies into a carbonaceous black char. The
   black char is a poor conductor of heat and prevents the spreading of flames.
 * As the fire continues to burn; the heat resistant paint coating will swell
   and expand up to 50x - 100x thicker than the original coat applied. This is
   also known as an endothermic process.
 * The black char insulates and protects the integrity of the steel, iron,
   concrete, timber or composite surface. In turn, it maintains the load-bearing
   capacity. 
 * Dependant on the building structure and the thickness of the Intumescent
   coating, the heat resistant paint can protect for 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes.

10. THE APPEARANCE OF INTUMESCENT COATINGS

If left untreated, typically, a thick film Intumescent or thin-film
Intumescent coating finish has the appearance of thick white paint. 

Intumescent paint colours are available in white or clear (for timber only);
however, this does not provide limitations. The Intumescent coating can be
covered with a ‘Top Seal’ of colour to give an aesthetic appearance. 

For example, if you require ‘black heat resistant paint’, we would first apply
the basecoat/primer, then the Intumescent Paint Coating. Finally, a Top Seal of
black would be used, providing ‘black heat resistant paint’.
