For one, I'd like to point out this kid was not a "fuckin dummy". He was actually a pretty creative and insightful person. But he was also a very sick kid who needed a lot of help. In some of his earlier videos he mentioned that he believed he was a bad person because of some things he'd done as a child, when in reality those "bad things" he did were no different than what most little boys do. Little boys are rowdy and rambunctious and sometimes will accidentally get into trouble without ever meaning to cause any harm. But for one reason or another, he was led to believe from a young age that he was a bad kid. Also, while he mentioned that he believed he was happy as a child, I think this was untrue. He was exhibiting depressive behavior from an extremely young age, and it's quite clear that there was something wrong in the home especially considering he stated more than once that he hated his father and that his mother was just sort of oblivious. When a very young child experiences depression for so long, they often believe they're happy because they never truly knew happiness. As the child grows into teen years, this depression can become chronic and even dangerous.The severe and even traumatic emotions that the child experiences were never able to fully be processed throughout childhood because the brain is not developed enough to completely experience it. Once teen years have been reached and the brain is more mature, now those emotions can be fully experienced and they often hit all at once. This seemed to be the case with Randy, since his content during this stage in his life began getting darker and darker. (Let's also not forget that he was also borderline transgender. As statistics show, those who feel they're in the wrong body are much more likely to commit suicide if they believe they are unable to pursue their true form, especially if they're afraid of persecution from their loved ones as Randy was.) It's also very common for a teen to actually enjoy these emotions. For one, it helps them become extremely creative which can be used as an outlet for their emotions, at least temporarily. But for another reason, as Randy mentions in one of his suicide tapes, he felt like this darkness was very familiar to him, like it was home. This correlates with the idea that he'd been depressed his whole life, but only fully experienced it in the later years of his life. Typically during this time, the family will notice something is very wrong and will intervene to get the kid help. If successful, the kid can learn how to process these emotions and can also go on to experience happiness. This chronic depression will wane, and they'll go on with their lives. It seems Randy even tried leaving a ton of clues for his family to pick up to express something was wrong, but no one ever intervened or showed any real interest. Even an hour or so before the murders, he sent emails to his friends confessing his plans and what he was about to do. He uploaded his videos, and waited. I'm not sure if he waited a half hour or an hour, but he gave it plenty of time for police to be informed and show up. When no one did, he went through with his plans. Sadly his friends were all sleeping at the time and did not see the emails until the following morning. I can understand why he believed he was fated to do what he did, because he left so many bread crumbs and clues for someone to intervene, but no one ever did. If this chronic depression is not dealt with within the teen years, it can progress to extremely dangerous circumstances in early adulthood. The extreme feelings of loneliness and believing that no one understands you can be crushing. In such a fragile state of mind, it's very easy to become delusional and develop a sort of fictional belief that they adopt and eventually become convinced it's true. The brain is a pretty creative tool in combating these lonely feelings, and that's what it did for Randy with the EGS and the Danny Phantom fan fiction. Randy believed he was fated to do what he did because of the fact that he left so many clues that no one noticed. He believed his fate could not be avoided. A lot of young people in his situation aren't going to come out and say "Mom, Dad, I'm sick and I need help". He was clearly afraid of being judged or ridiculed by his family, which was another thing he mentioned in his suicide tapes, and is a fear that many kids feel in these situations. So they'll leave it up to the family to make that first step. They believe that if the family cares enough, they'll do it. When sadly, while the family might care, they just don't understand, have no idea what to do, and sometimes do nothing as a result. The beautiful thing about this kid is, even though he was a very sick kid who really needed help, and even though he sadly did commit murder / suicide, he still had a very insightful outlook on the world. And honestly it's hard to argue his insight. The reason why I look at this as beauty is because most people in his situation can't even see anything good or beautiful in the world, let alone feel much empathy for people. While I'm sure Randy had a few reasons for doing what he did, one reason he mentioned was that he wanted to help people discover who they really are. He believed that catastrophe often helps put things into prospective and can jump start someone's journey to discovering themselves, and to bring out the good in humanity out of a horrible situation. While there is never a good reason for murdering innocent people, at the same time we can look all throughout history and within our own lives to see that it's actually true. I don't think he was necessarily trying to achieve fame like the Columbine boys, but rather have a deeper impact on humanity. Sure there were other more contradicting reasons too, like that people made him suffer so he'll cause suffering in return. But that's the nature of such a chronically dangerous depression. There are often two or more sides to a person experiencing these emotions. The psyche becomes split, so to speak, and will experience things independently from each other. It accounts for his contradicting emotions and points of view.. Randy didn't truly want to die or kill people, as he did many things to try and get someone to notice and stop him. He just wanted the suffering to end. But when it didn't happen, his delusional thinking caused him to believe he had to. And so he did. I say all this because when it comes to people like Randy, our society just sort of tosses them aside. We don't like it when someone reminds us of the darker sides of life. We don't like it when someone rains on our parade. But sometimes in cases like these, all it takes is just one person to notice and show that they care, even if they're not sure how to help. And while it may not always help, sometimes that one person might just be enough to stop a catastrophic event from taking place. Calling him a "fuckin dummy" doesn't help anyone and only perpetuates these types of events. Like Randy said, man or woman, we're all just people, searching for love and searching for ourselves. Sadly Randy got lost within that search and killed others and himself as a result. If we as humans were just a little bit different, this may not have happened. Either way, whatever happens in the afterlife, I do hope he's found that happiness and belonging that he was so desperately searching for his whole life. And I also hope the families and loved ones of those who died are able to find peace.
