CHROME UPDATE FIXES ZERO-DAY CRASHES EXPLOITED BY CYBERCRIMINALS

Updating programs is the primary method for fixing bugs in software, including
Google products. In late October, the tech giant released version 95.0.4638.69
for its browser, Chrome, and fixed a total of eight security holes; including
seven vulnerabilities classified as high severity.

Among those eight vulnerabilities, two were zero-day: CVE-2021-38000 and
CVE-2021-38003. Google claims that both flaws were used by criminals to break
into systems.

Zero-day vulnerabilities are critical gaps that have gone undetected in the
software and systems development process. These types of flaws can be exploited
by attackers to spread other cyber threats such as Trojans, rootkits, malware
and worms.

In the case of the zero-day flaws, Google didn’t provide much detail about the
vulnerabilities. What is known is that the CVE-2021-38000 is a bug high severity
related to insufficient validation for untrusted entries through Intents (wizard
vectors that help perform browser actions), while CVE-2021-38003 is an
inadequate implementation in V8, the Chrome browser engine in JavaScript.



The other seven vulnerabilities, although they are classified as high and medium
risk, have not been detected being used by criminals. Check their codes below:

 * CVE-2021-37997 – High risk
 * CVE-2021-37998 – High risk
 * CVE-2021-37999 – High risk
 * CVE-2021-38001 – High risk
 * CVE-2021-38002 – High risk
 * CVE-2021-38004 – Medium risk

To update Chrome, users must go to the menu by clicking the three dots in the
upper right corner of the browser, select Help and, thirdly, choose the About
Google Chrome option. Once this is done, the browser will look for available
updates and install them. Finally, it’s a warning that, although the new version
of the browser has already been released worldwide, it may take a while for all
computers with the program installed to access it.
