POLICE CHIEF'S CORNER - NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2021

OCTOBER IS RECOGNIZED FOR MANY THINGS:

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

The Bunnell Police Department and the City of Bunnell recognize October as
Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Here is an excerpt from the City's
Proclamation:

NOW THEREFORE, I, Catherine D. Robinson as the Mayor of the City of Bunnell do
hereby declare October as “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH” in Bunnell andurge
all citizens of Bunnell to become a part of the community response to end
domestic violence and to send the message that this crime will not be tolerated
in our community.  As we spread awareness of domestic violence in our community
during the month of October, we recognize that it takes an entire community to
stand together and make a difference.  Together we can break the cycle and
impact the lives of future generations.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The month of October is also know as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Bunnell
Police Department supports the fight against breast cancer.  That is the second
leading cause of death among women, but can effect men as well.  Bunnell Police
Department is committed to raising awareness about breast cancer and the impact
it has on our love ones, friends, colleagues and community members.

CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS MONTH

Perhaps less know to the general population, October has been designated as
Cyber Security Awareness Month.  Learn how to reduce your cybersecurity risks
and protecting yourself online.  Do your part.  #BeCyberSmart.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FROM THE BUNNELL POLICE DEPARTMENT

It's the spookiest time of the year. Costumes, candy, and tricks are a great
deal of fun, but there are some safety considerations to keep in mind.

 * Make sure all costumes, wigs, and accessories are fire-resistant.
 * When out after dark, make sure children (and parents) are visible to vehicles
by having reflective tape on bags or costumes or by using glow sticks.
 * On Halloween night, motorists should be extra aware of potential pedestrians
crossing, or walking in the street.

Other Tips:
Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating. Make sure you’re walking and not
running from house to house.
Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent
possible skin and eye irritation.
Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks.
Lower your risk of eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
Only walk on sidewalks. If not possible, walk along the far edge of the road
facing traffic.
Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and
falls.
Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses.
Don’t stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.
Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame resistant
costumes.
