CAPITALS RELEASE 2023 DEVELOPMENT CAMP ROSTER

The Washington Capitals will host the first day of their annual Development Camp
at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Saturday. After releasing the schedule for the
camp earlier this week, the Caps have now revealed the full roster of attendees.

All six of the Caps’ selections from the 2023 draft will be in attendance,
including top selections Ryan Leonard and Andrew Cristall. However, none of the
players that factored into the Hershey Bears’ long run to a Calder Cup
championship will join them.

ANDREW CRISTALL ON HIS PLAYING STYLE, HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH VINCENT IORIO, AND
MODELING HIS GAME AFTER NICKLAS BACKSTROM

The Washington Capitals took a big swing with their second pick in the 2023 NHL
Draft, grabbing Andrew Cristall from the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets 40th overall. The
Caps had Cristall ranked in the top 32 of their draft board and many scouts
labeled the selection as one of the steals of the early rounds.

“I thought he was going to go in the first round,” Capitals GM Brian MacLellan
said. “We had him in the first round. I think he was a target [for us] coming
into the second day. We made a couple opportunities or at least tried to make a
couple opportunities to jump up and pick him. Fortunately we got him with a
regular pick.”

There’s good reason why. Cristall finished sixth overall in WHL scoring last
season despite missing 14 games with a quad contusion. He tallied 95 points
(39g, 56a) in just 54 games for the Rockets, an impressive 1.76 points per game
which ranked second among all draft-eligible players behind only Connor Bedard
(2.51).

HERSHEY BEARS RE-SIGN JULIAN NAPRAVNIK AND MICHAEL KIM TO AHL CONTRACTS

The 2023 Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears could see a lot of upheaval heading
into the first day of free agency on Saturday as half of their roster needs new
deals.

The team announced their first extensions on Friday since raising the Calder Cup
last week. The Bears re-signed forward Julian Napravnik and defenseman Michael
Kim to one-year AHL contracts — two less heralded players that could play bigger
roles next season.

BORGSTROM; NON-TENDER KODY CLARK AND GABRIEL CARLSSON

The Washington Capitals extended qualifying offers to Martin Fehervary, Riley
Sutter, and Henrik Borgstrom before Friday’s 5 pm deadline. This means the team
retains their rights moving forward.

Capitals opted to non-tender qualifying offers to Kody Clark and Gabriel
Carlsson. They will become unrestricted free agents when free agency opens
Saturday at noon.

BRIAN MACLELLAN SAYS CAPITALS TRIED TO MOVE UP IN NHL DRAFT BUT ‘EVERYBODY HAD
THEIR GUY THAT THEY WANTED TO GET’

The Washington Capitals’ rumored pursuit of Matvei Michkov was all but confirmed
by GM Brian MacLellan after he spoke to reporters at the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Russian phenom was selected one spot in front of the Capitals at pick number
seven by the Philadelphia Flyers.

The morning of the draft, Hockey Insiders Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek
reported that all the talk heading into the event was that the Capitals were
trying to find a way to move up ahead of the Flyers to pick Michkov.

ELLIOTTE FRIEDMAN MENTIONS CAPITALS AS POTENTIAL TRADE SUITOR FOR SENATORS’ ALEX
DEBRINCAT

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan reiterated his interest in
securing a top-six forward this offseason at the draft in Nashville on Thursday.
During that presser, he seemed to indicate that the team was already working on
a trade for that top-six talent.

One name that would fit that billing is the Ottawa Senators’ Alex DeBrincat. In
the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast that came out on Friday, hockey
insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned the Caps as a potential landing spot for the
scoring winger.

PWHPA OWNERSHIP ACQUIRES PHF, WILL LAUNCH NEW PRO WOMEN’S LEAGUE IN 2024

The Premier Hockey Federation has been acquired by the Professional Women’s
Hockey Players Association-affiliated Billie Jean King Enterprises and Mark
Walter Group, effectively ending the PHF as it currently exists. Players from
the PHF and PWHPA will play together under a single league run by the new
ownership group beginning in January 2024.

Formerly the National Women’s Hockey League, the PHF was founded in 2015 and
consists of seven teams in the United States and Canada. The Athletic’s Shayna
Goldman reports that financial struggles may have fueled the acquisition, with
the PHF possibly considering bankruptcy. The PWHPA began in 2019, but had not
yet created a formal league. Per The Hockey News’ Ian Kennedy, the new league
will play with six teams, meaning the end of at least one existing PHF
franchise.

BRIAN MACLELLAN SEEMS TO INDICATE THE CAPITALS ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A TRADE
FOR A TOP-SIX TALENT

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said in March that the club
would look to add “a top-six winger that has skill” over the offseason.

Now, with the 2023 NHL Draft completed, MacLellan appears to finally have
something or somethings cooking.

While speaking to the press at Bridgestone Arena, MacLellan revealed that just
because the team did not make a deal ahead of the draft, didn’t mean there
weren’t gears turning behind the scenes.

BRIAN MACLELLAN SAYS THE CAPITALS HAVEN’T HAD A SINGLE DISCUSSION ABOUT TRADING
TOM WILSON: ‘WE’RE CONSTANTLY TELLING PEOPLE WE’RE NOT’

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan is exasperated at the media
and rightly so.

Tom Wilson, who is an unrestricted free agent next summer, wants to re-sign
longterm with the Capitals and the Capitals want Wilson to finish his career in
their organization. It seems like a pretty open and shut situation, but rumors
that Wilson could be on the move keep on popping up.

Thursday, after the Capitals made six picks total at the 2023 NHL Draft,
MacLellan once again reiterated that Tom Wilson is not available. Like at all.

CAPITALS USE FINAL PICK TO SELECT GOALTENDER ANTOINE KELLER, THE FIRST PLAYER IN
FRANCHISE HISTORY TO EVER BE DRAFTED FROM FRANCE

The Washington Capitals wrapped up their 2023 draft by trading back into the
seventh round, sending the San Jose Sharks a 2025 seventh-round pick to do so.
With their new pick, they took a trip to Dijon, France, and selected goaltender
Antoine Keller.

Keller has played the majority of his junior career in Switzerland. He is the
first player in Caps franchise history to be drafted out of France and only the
sixth French player ever drafted overall.
