Why murder in Canada can get you a sentence of only a few months
In Canada, you can violently kill someone and go to jail for only a few years,
if that. It happens a lot, actually. Any conceivable mitigating factor – you
didn’t mean to kill the person by stabbing them, you had a bad childhood, you
come from a demographic harmed by colonialism – and chances are good that from
the moment your trial starts, your murder won’t even technically count as a
murder. Please subscribe

 3. SALISBURY COMPOSITE SENIORS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL READY TO WIN IT ALL

After a season of wins, the Salisbury Composite High School senior girls
Division 1 volleyball team can add two post-season victories to their list
of successes this season. Ending the regular seasons at the top of the
division, the Sal’s senior girls faced off against Jasper Place on
Wednesday, Oct. 30 and shut out the west Edmonton competitors in three
straight sets. A repeat performance on Monday, Nov. 4 saw the Sal girls
triumph over Old Scona with another 3-0 win in the Metro Edmonton Athletics’
semi-finals. “They played well and provided some good resistance throughout
the match. In the end, our girls made plays when it counted and that was the
difference,” said Sal’s senior girls volleyball coach Grant Melnyk. The Sal
senior girls took home the Metro banner in 2022, but fell to Harry Ainlay
last year. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, they got their rematch, going head-to-head
with Ainlay once again for the coveted City Championship. “I think the girls
are ready to get some payback and they’ll bring their best,” the coach
predicted. That final game took place past The News’ publication deadline on
Wednesday. “We feel very confident going into this game, especially because
of our success in league and majority of this year’s tournaments. With the
great coaching staff and group of girls we have this year, I know we are
going to achieve big things and, hopefully, make history on Wednesday
night,” said team captain Jensyn Brydon. “Our coaches like to say 17=1,
three coaches and 14 amazing athletes makes one incredible team.” Hosting
the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade, Sal had a home court
advantage, which Melnyk said provided an exciting atmosphere for the girls
on Monday. Still, home court advantage can only go so far and Melnyk
attributes his team’s success to the collaborative efforts of the players.
“At the end of the day, you have to play well and execute on the court to
come away on top, but I think having the fans in the crowd is going to
motivate the girls,” Melnyk explained. “We’ve preached a team game, so
finding a role in every set and every match and whatever that role is being
a team first. I think that team mentality has brought us to this point.”
Joining their senior counterparts, Sal’s Division 1 junior girls have also
had a remarkable season, finishing in first with no losses in the regular
season. Defeating Paul Kane 3-1 on Monday, Nov. 4, the junior girls will
fight for the Metro championship against either Jasper Place or Bev Facey on

 4. LITTLE BALLERS BASKETBALL TO HOST FREE SESSION

What started as a father’s desire to get his children involved in
extracurricular sports has grown into a program in communities across three
provinces. When Chad Celaire of Winnipeg, MB became a stay-at-home father in
2017, he quickly realized how much energy his young son had. “I was just
observing how active he was and thinking, ‘Man we’re going to have to put
him in something,’” said Celaire jovially. Looking at the local programs for
toddler athletes, Celaire said he found dance and soccer programs, but as a
basketball player wanted to be able to introduce his son to playing the game
he himself grew up loving. “I started doing little drills with him at home
and wondered what he could do, and then he came around the corner at about
three years old dribbling the basketball. I thought, if he can dribble a
ball that means we should start a business,” he said. And so Little Ballers
was born. With two locations in Winnipeg, it didn’t take long for Celarie’s
dream of bringing basketball to babies to come to fruition and in the first
semester of the program, Little Ballers had 70 kids enrolled. Today, they
have begun expanding into Alberta and currently run programs in 18 locations
throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, employing 115 coaches, and
starting kids on the court as early as 10-months-old. As part of the Alberta
expansion, Little Ballers will be holding a free trial class on Sunday, Nov.
17 at École Père Kenneth Kearns School (8 Sandpiper Drive), welcoming kids
from as young as 10 months old, accompanied by a parent, to eight-years-old.
Offering four levels of training, Baby Ballers (10 months to 2.5 years),
Little Ballers (2.5 to 3.5 years), Mini Ballers (3.5 to 5 years, and Big
Ballers (5 to 8 years) the young athletes are taught the basics of the game
through interactive activities such as singing songs, learning skills, and
eventually playing three-on-three games. “This program, for a lot of
parents, is the first time they’re seeing what their babies are capable of,”
said Celaire. “Our Baby Ballers Class in particular is a class that has
mandatory parent assistance, so there has to be at least one parent on the
court with their child.” While having parents join their kids in the baby
baller phase is to help keep the kids comfortable, in Celaire’s own
parenthood journey learning how to interact with his kids was something that
took time, and the program helps parents learn how to play. “This program is
kind of a gateway, giving parents tools to help them better interact with
their own children,” he explained. Helping to develop the foundational
skills of basketball such as dribbling, aim, passing, and shooting, the
program also emphasizes stretching and agility which are foundational in all
athletic endeavours. Kicking off at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, each level
will run for an hour, starting with Baby Ballers, and finishing with Big
Ballers starting at 12:30 p.m. As of the time of publication, all levels
have spots available, with each accepting a maximum of 20 participants.
Details of the January 2025 program are still being arranged, but Little
Ballers is looking for new coaches to join their team and run the program in
Sherwood Park. To apply to join the Little Ballers coaching team, visit
littleballersbasketball.com and select the jobs category. For more

Lomo saltado, causa, chaufa, chicha morada, and ajo amarillo are all dishes
and ingredients we don’t see a whole lot on Calgary menus, despite the
growing worldwide popularity of Peruvian cooking. South American cuisine,
and Peruvian food in particular, is getting much fanfare these days. The top
restaurant on last year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants list was Central, a
distinctively Peruvian restaurant in Lima and inventive Peruvian restaurants
are popping up in cities all over Canada and the United States. Calgary is
still catching up — we have a couple of good Peruvian restaurants in town,
but we’ve long been lacking an inner-city take on modern Peruvian fare.
Sumaq, a new restaurant on 17th Avenue S.W., is stepping up to fill that
    gap.

OPINION

 1. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - THURSDAY, NOV. 7

Misleading UCP policy At the UCP annual general meeting that took place this
weekend, 5,500 UCP members voted on 35 policy resolutions. Policy Resolution
#12 (written by two UCP MLAs) looks to abandon net-zero targets and
“celebrate” CO2 as a “foundational nutrient for all life on earth.”   Robert
Slowski, Sherwood Park Re: “Museum a gift to Alberta, not UCP” letter to the
editor in The News‘ Sept. 19 edition The former Royal Alberta Museum belongs
to the citizens of Alberta and definitely not to any one particular sitting
government. To use this space for a signature convention centre with ample
parking in an already scenic green space is a great suggestion. Here are
other viable options: Earth General Store is scrambling to stay in business,
while Mandolin Books and Take 5 Cafe are closing. Our former Royal Albert
Museum could provide excellent space at reasonable rents to these and other
locally owned small businesses. Where is the creative incentive by our
provincial government to make this happen? Who or what group in the UCP
party is responsible for this wasteful decision to tear down our historic
museum building? Put this important public question of tearing down this
valuable building, our former Royal Albert Museum, to a plebiscite. The
overwhelming response would be no! Regan Pinkoski, Sherwood Park Thank you
for refilling food bank shelves On behalf of the Strathcona Food Bank, thank
you Strathcona County residents for your generosity in our two recent food
    drives.
