THE ART OF USER EXPERIENCE: WHY UX/UI IS INDISPENSABLE IN APP DEVELOPMENT

THE ART OF USER EXPERIENCE: WHY UX/UI IS INDISPENSABLE IN APP DEVELOPMENT

Digital transformation is always a hot topic. Applications are not only crucial
bridges for interaction between business and consumers, but can also serve as
practical tools for internal communication.

Enterprises can develop different types of applications for various purposes.
For example, a membership application can be developed to improve experience and
enhance loyalty. This includes features such as membership points, product
recommendations, and personalization, all designed to attract and retain
customers.

At the same time, enterprises can create applications specifically designed for
employees, aimed at improving the efficiency of workflows. These applications
might include project workflow management, performance measurement, attendance
recording, and staff notice push features, helping to streamline daily
workflows, facilitate collaboration among employees, and improve access to
information, thus increasing overall work efficiency.

A successful app must not only meet functional needs, but also feature
outstanding user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design to attract and
retain users. Today, we spoke with the head of our design team to walk us
through the application design process and the common considerations during
development.

THE IMPORTANCE AND PURPOSE OF UX

UX refers to the experience a user has while interacting with a product,
encompassing the ease of use, efficiency, and the ability to meet their needs.
Its essence lies in problem-solving. UX is not limited to interface design (UI);
it also includes a range of strategies and methods that help designers choose
the most appropriate solution from multiple possible options.

Investing resources in improving UX/UI is key to enhancing user experience. This
is true from both an external perspective, such as attracting customers to
download the app and increasing engagement rates, and an internal perspective,
such as achieving more efficient operational management. Good UX design can
significantly improve user satisfaction with the application, increasing the
time and frequency of use.

THE ROLE OF DESIGNERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

In the development process, designers play the role of decision-makers. They
need to choose from various options, narrowing down and retaining essential
choices to ensure that the solutions not only meet user needs but also minimize
potential risks and the likelihood of errors during development.

After identifying the solution, the designer’s role extends to shaping various
aspects of the application, including interface interactions. This encompasses
crafting the layout, visual elements, and interaction design to seamlessly
integrate functionality with visual appeal.

THE DOUBLE DIAMOND MODEL OF DESIGN

The “The Double Diamond Model of Design” guides the design process through two
distinct phases of expansion and consolidation. Initially, designers widen the
scope of their exploration to uncover and define the most critical problems that
require solutions. Following this, they generate a broad spectrum of potential
solutions. Through concept validation, they can then narrow down these options,
focusing on the solutions with the greatest potential.

INITIAL STAGES OF THE DESIGN PROCESS: EMPATHIZE AND DEFINE

In the initial stage of the design process, identifying the correct problem is
crucial. The design team works closely with clients to ascertain and understand
the challenges faced. Designers need to be empathetic, considering thoroughly
from both the client’s perspective and that of the end-users. This involves
understanding the most critical issues and the core of the problems currently
faced.

This process usually involves extensive research from both qualitative and
quantitative methods to gain insights and define the problem, such as
identifying “Jobs to be Done” from observations, conducting surveys, and
one-on-one interviews.

THE SECOND DIAMOND: FROM CONCEPT, TESTING TO IMPLEMENTATION

“Opportunity Score” is often used to assess the urgency and importance of an
issue, ensuring that the team can prioritize those problems that most
significantly affect users. Once the problems and solutions have been
identified, designers create design sketches called “Wireframe”, based on the
user needs outlined in the user stories. These sketches provide a basic
interface framework that allows the development team and clients to understand
and evaluate the new user flow.

End-users and stakeholders are then invited to test the product prototype,
pointing out areas that need improvement or redesign, and whether it meets the
“Acceptance Criteria,” to gather feedback and further optimize the design of the
product.

Following this, designers will refine the wireframe based on brand guidelines
and create more elaborate visual prototypes (mock-ups), incorporating aspects
like color schemes, images, and font styles. Once the client approves these
designs, the final product will be handed over to the engineering team for
development. Throughout this phase, close collaboration between the UX team and
the development team is essential to verify the design’s technical viability and
ensure uniformity in the end-user experience.

AVOIDING COMMON UX/UI DESIGN PITFALLS AND PRACTICAL DESIGN STRATEGIES

When embarking on app development projects, companies encounter challenges. To
successfully launch an app that resolves issues, brands must steer clear of mere
imitation and concentrate on comprehending and solving the unique business
requirements and pain points of their customers or employees.

RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS: MARKET AND USER NEEDS

The first step in developing an application is to conduct thorough research and
user needs analysis. By deeply understanding the specific needs and motivational
behaviors of the target user group, brands can more accurately define the core
problems that the application needs to solve. Preventing the waste of resources
and ensuring that the application can effectively enhance user experience and
satisfaction. Therefore, before starting development, it is crucial to identify
and solve the right problems, which helps to clarify the specific challenges
faced by the business and focus resources on key areas of needs resolution.
Accurately uncovering the real, unmet needs and behavioral motivations of
end-users allows for the development of applications that truly meet user
needs—usefulness is the biggest incentive for users to continue using the app.

CONTINUOUS COMMUNICATION AND FEEDBACK

Throughout the development process, it is crucial for brands to maintain
constant communication with designers and development teams. Regular feedback
and adjustments help to timely resolve issues, preventing resource
misallocation. Effective communication enables the design team to align closely
with the brand’s long-term goals and better understand the needs of end-users,
leading to solutions that more effectively meet consumer or internal employee
expectations. This process should include not only periodic meetings but also
the sharing of progress updates and immediate problem-solving efforts.

Continuous communication is particularly vital during the early design stages,
allowing the brand to provide additional insights that may not be evident
through standard research. This interaction helps in refining solutions to
address both expressed and unexpressed user needs, enhancing user engagement and
satisfaction with the final product.

EMPIRICAL RESEARCH AND USER FEEDBACK

Throughout the development process, brands should focus on empirical research
and user feedback. By using surveys, one-on-one interviews, and other means to
collect key information, this data will guide the application’s design direction
and feature settings. Verifying assumptions with real user data and adjusting
features based on it. Significantly improve the market adaptability and user
satisfaction of the application after its launch, as this user feedback-driven
approach ensures that the application truly meets their needs and expectations

GOAL-ORIENTED APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT

When a company starts a new development project, the primary aim is to address
specific problems such as sales bottlenecks or operational inefficiencies, by
creating an application that meets user needs and maximizes benefits. A brand’s
app is now a strategy for enhancing customer experience and fostering
innovation, aligning with long-term goals of a business. Critical to this
process is the deep understanding of end-users’ needs, requiring investment in
researching their behavioral patterns, preferences, and expectations to ensure
the app addresses their core problems effectively.

Companies should also develop unique strategies that differ from competitors,
avoiding imitation of existing applications. Tailored solutions that reflect a
brand’s unique characteristics and values better meet user needs. By focusing on
goal-oriented development, companies can enhance user satisfaction, highlight
their distinctiveness, and promote continuous growth.

As for application development, a good design not only enhances user convenience
and satisfaction but also significantly affects users’ overall impression of the
brand. To avoid common design pitfalls, companies must conduct thorough market
research and needs analysis to ensure that the application accurately addresses
the specific needs of the target user group. Additionally, establishing ongoing
communication and feedback mechanisms is an indispensable part of the
development process, helping to ensure that designs are of the solution timely
adjusted and optimized.
