AESTHETICS GET SYNTHETIC

Aesthetics get Synthetic: Knowledge Link through Art and Science (KLAS) is an
Artist in Residence program of the Max Planck Society. KLAS fosters ArtSci
exchange and transdisciplinary innovation and education whilst also establishing
a link between Synthetic Biology research groups of two research institutions -
Rijksuniversiteit Groningen [RuG] and two Max Planck Institutes [MPI]. In
addition to awarding two Artist Residencies in 2017, KLAS will present a series
of events and conversations around specific thematic topics. KLAS is funded by
the Max Planck Society and the Schering Foundation and organized by Polyhedra.

MAX PLANCK SOCIETY

Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces * Max Planck Institute of
Molecular Plant Physiology. A cocktail of cutting-edge research from
biotechnology to physics, advanced tools and the latest technological
developments make this location a gather point for (young) international
researchers and professors, an extraordinary hub for innovation and creative
thinking.

UNIVERSITY OF GRONINGEN

The University of Groningen is an international research university with strong
roots in the north of the Netherlands. The university creates and shares
knowledge through its outstanding research, scholarship and education. With an
academic tradition dating back to 1614 and a rich heritage, the university is a
unique academic community with a strong sense of belonging and a culture of
innovative education and research.

OPEN CALL

The innovative artist residency program to bring professional artists into the
selected high-quality research groups and, by doing so, to establish a bridge
between science and society. KLAS will provide an inspiring environment for the
artists and their creative process. (Artist will be interacting closely with the
scientists, attend science talks and multidisciplinary discussions, exhibit
their work at these institutions, etc).

HOSTING RESEARCH GROUPS

THE FOUR OUTSTANDING RESEARCH GROUPS, FROM RUG AND MPI, SELECTED FOR KLAS 2017.

 * TOM ROBINSON

   Biomicrofluidic Systems

 * ARREN BAR-EVEN

   Systems and Synthetic Metabolism

 * JAN KOK

ARTS & SCIENCES

KLAS BELIEVES THAT INSTIGATING INTERACTION AND PLAY – BETWEEN ARTISTS &
SCIENTIST – IS NECESSARY. IT CREATES MORE SPACE FOR REFLECTION AND ALLOWS
EXPLORATION OUTSIDE OF EACH SINGLE DISCIPLINE’S BOUNDARIES.

DURING THE LAST DECADES INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES HAVE GAINED INTERNATIONAL
RELEVANCE. KLAS HAS BEEN DESIGN TO WORK IN THIS LINE.

Societal engagement in research and innovation is of great importance. Knowledge
Link through Art and Science creates an inclusive praxis on various levels, in
order to strengthen the collaborative governance and democratic elements of
research and innovation. 1

Complying with several of the European Commission key issues where focused
research is needed – ranging from energy to security – Knowledge Link through
Art and Science encourage interplay of artistic research with scientific and
technological skills.

Curiosity leads to research…so, remember to have fun!!
