Saint Teresa of Ávila

Saint Theresa, also known as Saint Teresa of Ávila, was a Spanish Carmelite nun,

ST. CECILIA

Saint Cecilia is one of the most revered Christian martyrs of the early Church,
celebrated for her unwavering faith and devotion to God. Born in Rome during the
2nd or 3rd century AD, Cecilia was raised in a devout Christian family. Legend
has it that she consecrated her virginity to God, despite her parents’ plans for
her to marry a pagan nobleman. Her steadfast commitment to her faith, even in
the face of pressure to renounce Christianity, exemplifies her dedication to her
beliefs.

One of the most famous stories surrounding Saint Cecilia revolves around her
marriage. According to tradition, on her wedding day, Cecilia sang to God in her
heart, dedicating herself solely to Him. This act of devotion was met with
divine approval, as Cecilia’s prayers were believed to have been answered by an
angel, who protected her purity and her commitment to Christ. This narrative
underscores Cecilia’s status as the patron saint of music, as she is often
depicted with musical instruments, symbolizing her heavenly melodies.

Cecilia’s unwavering faith eventually led to her martyrdom. During the
persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Cecilia was
arrested and sentenced to death for her refusal to renounce her Christian
beliefs. Despite attempts to execute her, including suffocation and beheading,
Cecilia miraculously survived for three days, during which she continued to
preach and convert others to Christianity. Her courage and resilience in the
face of persecution have made her an enduring symbol of faith and fortitude.

Throughout the centuries, Saint Cecilia’s legacy has been honored through
various artistic representations, musical compositions, and dedications. She is
revered not only for her martyrdom but also for her association with music,
which serves as a reminder of the transformative power of faith and the enduring
influence of those who remain steadfast in their beliefs, even in the most
challenging circumstances. Saint Cecilia’s life and martyrdom continue to
inspire Christians around the world to remain faithful to their beliefs and to
persevere in the face of adversity.

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

The prophets of the Old Testament foretold that God’s Spirit would rest upon the
Messiah to sustain his mission. Their prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus the
Messiah was conceived by the Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Spirit
descended on Jesus on the occasion of his baptism by John. Jesus’ entire mission
occurred in communion with the Spirit. Before he died, Jesus promised that the
Spirit would be given to the Apostles and to the entire Church. After his death,
he was raised by the Father in the power of the Spirit.

Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses
of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. . . . We
receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great
emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the
Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service.

VISON

In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is"sealed with the gift of
the Holy Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.
