WHO WE ARE The New Zealand Wind Energy Association, (NZWEA), is a membership-based industry organisation supporting the power of wind as a reliable, sustainable, clean & commercially viable energy source. In Aotearoa New Zealand, wind energy is pivotal to shaping our energy future and realising our commitment to achieving a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. We aim to fairly represent wind energy to the public, government and the broader energy sector. Our focus is on utility-scale wind generation where we are a central point of information and collaboration for our members. NZWEA is therefore a trusted voice in the market for wind energy. We recognise that wind energy (onshore and offshore) has a key role to play in the future of Aotearoa New Zealand’s electricity generation portfolio to both ensure customer demand can be met when needed and to reduce our sector carbon emissions. We work hard to ensure that New Zealand’s world class wind energy resource is harnessed in a responsible and sustainable manner for many generations to come. Find Out More OUR AMBITION WIND ENERGY Over the past two and a half decades, wind technology has made significant strides. Wind turbines have become larger, more efficient, and more reliable, while the cost of wind-generated electricity has reduced. To meet our ambitious net-zero targets by 2050 and to at least double the renewable electricity we produce, Aotearoa must accelerate its collective efforts, aiming to build six times more wind energy capacity in the next 25 years than in the last 25 years. Aotearoa’s wind energy sector is uniquely positioned to rise to these challenges that will require us to generate an additional 37,000 GWh/y. To deliver this amount of additional renewable energy, we estimate that between 11 GW – 13 GW of ‘new’ renewable generation capacity will need to be built. With strong partnerships, continued collaboration and stakeholder support, the NZ wind energy sector looks forward to enabling these crucial goals. Both onshore and offshore wind energy offer promising avenues to tackle these challenges, necessitating a unified approach for success.
