10 STAR TREK ACTORS WHO PLAYED MORE THAN ONE ROLE

The Star Trek franchise had the unique ability to recast actors as multiple
alien races, meaning some actors have played quite a few different roles.

The Star Trek community suffered a great loss with the recent passing of
Nichelle Nichols. She starred in The Original Series in the iconic role of the
Enterprise’s communications officer, Nyota Uhura. Nichols also voiced a few
different characters on Star Trek: The Animated Series, which was a fairly
common occurrence in the Star Trek universe.

There have been quite a few actors who have taken on multiple roles in Star Trek
over the years. Thanks to the various alien races that have appeared, actors
have been able to return in different roles using make-up and effects. Some
actors have appeared in different roles across different Star Trek shows while
others even appeared in multiple roles on the same series.

10 DAVID WARNER PLAYED ROLES IN TWO MOVIES BEFORE RETURNING FOR STAR TREK: TNG

Another member of the Star Trek family who recently passed was David Warner. His
most recognizable role to fans of series like Star Trek: The Next Generation is
likely the Cardassian named Gul Madred. He tortured the Enterprise's captain in
the two-part “Chain of Command” episode which features some of Picard's best
quotes.

However, Warner first appeared in the franchise much earlier. He played St. John
Talbot in 1989’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Talbot was the Federation’s
disillusioned representative on the Planet of Galactic Peace. He then stepped
into the makeup chair for 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country where he
played the Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon.

9 TIM RUSS PLAYED THREE DIFFERENT ROLES BEFORE APPEARING AS TUVOK ON VOYAGER

When Tim Russ first hoped to join the Star Trek universe, it was in the role of
Geordi la Forge that later went to LeVar Burton. His actual first appearance
came in the “Starship Mine” episode from Star Trek: TNG. He played a mercenary
named Devor who was attempting to steal components from the ship, though that
wasn't the worst thing to happen to the Enterprise-D.

He later appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nineas a Klingon mercenary named
T’Kar who was attempting to steal a symbiont from Lt. Dax. He also appeared on
the big screen as a lieutenant on Enterprise-B in Star Trek: Generations.
However, Russ’ most well-known role is that of Lt. Cmdr. Tuvok, a Vulcan
Federation officer who appeared in seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager.

8 ARMIN SHIMERMAN PLAYED THE VERY FIRST FERENGHI BEFORE HIS ROLE AS DS9’S QUARK

Fans of Star Trek: DS9 fell in love with a few characters who didn’t often
appear in the other Star Trek series. Armin Shimerman played the fan-favorite
role of Quark, a Ferengi who operated his often crooked business on the titular
space station. However, Shimerman also played Quark on TNG as well as Voyager,
which is something only a few other actors did over the years.

Shimerman’s first appearance in the franchise was on Star Trek: TNG. He played a
Ferengi named Letek in the alien race's very first appearance. He also played an
uncredited role as a Betazoid gift box and later returned as another Ferengi
named DaiMon Bractor. He also played a human sci-fi writer from the 1950s named
Herbert Rossoff in DS9’s “Far Beyond the Stars.”

7 J.G. HERTZLER PLAYED SEVEN DIFFERENT CHARACTERS ACROSS MULTIPLE SERIES AND
GAMES

There are a few actors who are well-known to Star Trek fans, though they might
not always be recognizable due to the numerous alien roles. J.G. Hertzler first
appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a Vulcan captain who died in a battle
with one of the most dangerous enemies from TNG. However, it was his later role
as the Klingon Chancellor Martok that fans probably recognize.

He also played a Changeling named Laas before joining Armin Shimerman without
makeup as a sci-fi artist from the ‘50s. Hertzler also played a Hirogen fighter
on Voyager and appeared as two different Klingonson Star Trek: Enterprise. He
even voiced a Drookmani ship captain on the Star Trek: Lower Decksanimated
series.

6 TONY TODD PLAYED WORF’S BROTHER AND AN AGED JAKE SISKO AMONG OTHER CHARACTERS

Horror fans know Tony Todd from the terrifying Candyman franchise where he
played the horror movie villain for multiple decades. However, Star Trek fans
have seen him in a few roles over the years as well. He first appeared on Star
Trek: The Next Generation as Lt. Cmdr. Worf’s brother Kurn, a Klingon fighting
to reclaim their lost family honor.

He reprised this role on TNG and DS9 and voiced the character in video games.
Todd would return to DS9 to play an older version of Jake Sisko, the teenage son
of the space station’s Cmdr. Benjamin Sisko. Todd further added to his Star Trek
roles when he appeared on Star Trek: Voyager as Karon, an alien hunter
Alpha-Hirogen.

5 KURTWOOD SMITH PLAYED FOUR DIFFERENT ROLES ON TV AND ON THE BIG SCREEN

Fan-favorite actor Kurtwood Smith appeared in a few different roles across
multiple Star Trek series and movies. His first appearance came in 1991’s Star
Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country as the President of the Federation of Planets.
While it was a small role, it set the stage for his return as a new character
years later on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Smith portrayed a Cardassian named Thrax in DS9’s “Times Past” episode. He was
the former security officer of the space station before the Changeling named Odo
took over. He also played a Krenim named Annorax on Star Trek: Voyager who used
a weapon to erase species from the timeline. Smith also voiced an alien warrior
on Lower Decks named Clar from K’Tuevon Prime.

4 JAMES CROMWELL’S ROLE AS ZEFRAM COCHRANE IN FIRST CONTACT WAS NOT HIS FIRST

Primetime Emmy winner and activist James Cromwell appeared in the legendary role
of warp-drive creator Zefram Cochrane in 1996’s Star Trek: First Contact.
However, that wasn’t the celebrated actor's first role in the Star Trek
universe. He made his debut on Star Trek: TNG as the Angosian Prime Minister
named Nayrok who was fighting against enhanced soldiers.

Cromwell returned to TNG in the two-part “Birthright” episode as a Yridian
information dealer. This wasn’t his only time in the makeup chair, as he later
appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a Karemman Minister named Hanok. Both
roles made it hard to physically recognize Cromwell, though his iconic voice and
mannerisms were still familiar to fans.

3 JEFFREY COMBS HAS PLAYED EIGHT DIFFERENT CHARACTERS ACROSS THREE STAR TREK
SERIES

Horror icon Jeffrey Combs is no stranger to the Star Trek universe, as he has
played at least ten different characters over multiple series. His first
appearance on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine came after he initially auditioned for
the role of Cmdr. Riker that went to Jonathan Frakes. Frakes later directed the
DS9 episode “Meridian” and cast Combs as an alien named Tiron.

His recurring roles of a Ferengi named Brunt as well as different clones of the
Vorta named Weyoun even appeared in the same DS9 episode. Combs appeared on
Voyager as an alien ringmaster named Penk. He also played a Ferengi named Krem
on Enterprise as well as an Andorian named Thy'lek Shran. He even recently
voiced a supercomputer named AGIMUS on Lower Decks.

2 VAUGHN ARMSTRONG PLAYED ALIENS AND FEDERATION OFFICERS ACROSS FOUR DIFFERENT
SERIES

The actor who has appeared in the most roles across multiple series is Vaughn
Armstrong. He has played human characters along with some of Star Trek's best
alien races like Klingons. Romulans, and Cardassians. He's also played a
Vidiian, a Borg, an Alpha Hirogan and a Kreetassan. He appeared on Star Trek:
TNG as the first male Klingon aside from Lt. Cmdr. Worf.

He would also appear on DS9, Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise over the years.
One of his most memorable roles was also a recurring appearance as Admiral
Maxwell Forrest on Enterprise. Vaughn even got the chance to play an evil
alternate version of the character from the Mirror Universe named Maximillion
Forrest during the “In a Mirror, Darkly” episode.

1 MAJEL BARRETT RODDENBERRY PLAYED MULTIPLE ROLES ACROSS MULTIPLE SERIES AND
FILMS

“The First Lady of Star Trek” is the late Majel Barrett, who married Star Trek
creator Gene Roddenberry. She is the only actor to appear in some form across
the first six TV series. She is best known as the voice of the Federation
computers which can be heard in both film and TV. She appeared on almost every
version of the Enterprise in some form before her death in 2008.

Majel Barrett Rodenberry’s biggest role in Star Trek: The Original Series was as
Nurse/Dr. Christine Chapel, though she first appeared as Number One in the pilot
episode of the series. She later played Counsellor Deanna Troi’s mother Lwaxana
Troi on Star Trek: The Next Generation, which she later reprised on DS9.
