WRC HOLIDAY PROJECT

Each year, during the holidays, the Women’s Resource Center adopts a family
headed by a grandparent raising her grandchildren. There are many reasons
grandparents become caregivers and second-time parents. The issues cross
socioeconomic and racial lines, but many of the grandparents are on a fixed
income and the holidays are difficult for them to manage.

This year we are adopting two small families, each headed by a grandmother who
is raising a grandson. Details about each family’s wish list are available now.
Please contact Melanie DeMaeyer for the wish list if you’d like to participate.

APPLY TO BE AN ACC LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE DELEGATE

The 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Leadership Conference is a three-day
leadership learning opportunity to engage with peers from other ACC
universities. This year’s conference theme centers on The Ethics of
Globalization with a special focus on water. Over the course of the conference,
students will learn through interactive and dynamic sessions, keynote speakers
and hands-on group activities to apply the Social Change Model of Leadership to
campus life and personal passions.

The conference rotates host institutions and will take place Feb. 17–19, 2012,
at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Georgia Tech played
host in 2011.

The Georgia Tech delegation will include six students selected through an
application process. All students are welcome and encouraged to apply by
submitting an application form online and completing three essay questions
(included in the application form). The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Nov. 30,
at 5 p.m.

STUDENT ASSISTANT POSITION

Student Assistant Position Available at the IAC Dean's Office

The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office is looking for students to
staff the reception desk of the Habersham building while the full time
receptionist is out for lunch or on leave.

Student assistants will be responsible for: answer phone calls and directing
visitors to specific offices; answering general questions about Ivan Allen
College; processing and distributing mail; assisting in the set up for various
events at the college; assisting the dean’s office staff on various office
tasks.

Interested students must be outgoing and have strong communication skills. This
position is open to undergraduate students. The pay rate is $10.00 per hour

GWINNETT INFO SESSION

This session will provide information on the Teach Gwinnett alternative
certification program (also known as "Gwinnett's TAPP"); Gwinnett's Spring Job

with staff from Gwinnett's HR office.  Additionally, Gwinnett has a strong
alternative certification program specifically for people who want to become
special education teachers, so this session will be helpful to anyone curious

THE WELLSTONE FELLOWSHIP

The Wellstone Fellow's primary responsibilities include assisting in the
organization of conferences and trainings for advocates and community leaders;
drafting talking points, blogs, fact sheets, and other publications; and
developing content for the Families USA website and email lists. During the
year, the Fellow will learn organizing and advocacy skills about health reform
implementation, Medicaid, Medicare, health equity, and other important health
policy issues. At the same time, the Wellstone Fellow will develop an
understanding of the tactics and strategies used in state-based consumer health
advocacy organizations and will work directly with their network of state
consumer health advocates and organizations.

THE VILLERS FELLOWSHIP FOR HEALTH CARE JUSTICE

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by Philippe
Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Each year, the Villers Fellow
works in our health policy department and assists the organization's efforts to
improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income
and other vulnerable communities. Specifically, the Villers Fellow will conduct
research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to
publications that are relevant to health reform implementation and other health
policy issues.

In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network of young
leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The ideal candidate will
demonstrate a commitment to health care justice work following their year as a
fellow. Additionally, in order to encourage the development of future leaders,
Villers Fellows must commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of
their careers.

The application deadline for the Villers Fellowship is January 10, 2012.

AUTRY FELLOWSHIP IN COMMUNITY CHANGE AND SOCIAL EQUITY

MDC is interested in attracting talented applicants for the Autry Fellowship
from Georgia Tech. Each year, MDC offers a one-year, full-time position for
recent college graduates interested in careers in community change and social
equity.

The Autry Fellowship is a competitive fellowship for talented and ambitious
recent college graduates interested in careers in community change and social
equity. It provides an opportunity to work for one year at MDC as a full-time,
paid staff member. The Autry Fellowship supports MDC’s mission—to help
organizations and communities close the gaps that separate people from
opportunity—by developing a cadre of young leaders who have experience promoting
economic development, increasing equity and excellence in education, building
inclusive civic cultures, and who are poised and ready to apply their new
learning to benefit those left behind.

Qualifications include:

 * The ability to communicate and work with people who have diverse backgrounds
   and experiences
 * The capacity to understand complex economic and social issues and communicate
   those issues clearly and persuasively
 * Commitment to MDC’s mission
 * Prior work, study, or service in a variety of relevant areas, including
   public policy, education, economic and workforce development, poverty

Come join Enterprise to Empower at their third Coffee and Conversation of the
semester, being held this Thursday, December 1st from 7:00-8:00PM in CULC 325.
The theme for this month is Education, and their guest for the event will be
Shyam Kumar, the Metro Atlanta Executive Director of Teach for America! You will
have the opportunity to meet other students on campus interested in social
enterprise, and be able to discuss ways to correct education issues facing the
world today. Come out for some great food, great conversation, and great fun!

Can't make it to Coffee and Conversation? No worries. This Friday, December 2nd
from 7:00-9:00PM, En2Em will be having their Dinner with an Entrepreneur, with a
representative from Better World Books at Barrelhouse. Here you will have the
opportunity to speak more closely with someone involved in improving education
for people around the world.

SOCIAL EXPLORER

Many of you are aware that the library has purchased limited access to Social
Explorer.  If not, know that it's a great resource that has compiled American
demographic data from various resources (mainly Decennial Census data), dating
back to 1790.  The data can be organized in reports and displayed on a map down
to the block group level within census tracts.  Also, the site has created its
own "social explorer" tables which allows you to compare data in various years
and decades, a task that can be a headache when the Census rewords or redefines
questions  from decade to decade.  



The library has purchased use for this resource, but unfortunately has only
bought the subscription allowing use for one person at a time, significantly
reducing access to this site.  If you think this site will be helpful in at
least one project throughout the remainder of the 2011-2012 school year, please
sign the petition below to build confidence within the library staff at Georgia
Tech that this is money well invested for Georgia Tech students.

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AT THE NIH

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP)
offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who
are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science
health-related research. The program offers:

Scholarship support
Paid research training at the NIH during the summer
Paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation

Scholarship Support
The NIH UGSP will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational
expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships
are awarded for 1 year, and can be renewed up to 4 years.

Research Training at the NIH
For each full or partial scholarship year, you are committed to two NIH service
obligations. The obligations themselves are benefits of the UGSP-providing you
with invaluable research training and experience at the NIH.

 1. 10-week Summer Laboratory Experience. After each year of scholarship
    support, you will train for 10 weeks as a paid summer research employee in
    an NIH research laboratory. This employment occurs after the receipt of the
    scholarship award. Each scholar will be assigned to an NIH researcher and an
    NIH postdoctoral fellow, who will serve as mentors. You will also attend
    formal seminars and participate in a variety of programs.
 2. Employment at the NIH after Graduation. After graduation, you will continue
    your training as a full-time employee in an NIH research laboratory. You
    must serve 1 year of full-time employment for each year of scholarship.


Scholarship Requirements
The NIH Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to
students who show a commitment to pursuing careers in biomedical, behavioral,
and social science health-related research. The following are the basic
requirements:

 * U.S. citizen, national, or qualified noncitizen. 
 * Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student for the 2011-2012
   academic year at an accredited, 4-year undergraduate institution.
 * High school seniors are not eligible to apply.
 * 3.5 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale) or within the top 5 percent of your class.
 * From a disadvantaged background. Disadvantaged background means that your
   financial aid office has certified you as having "exceptional financial
   need." (Federal Register, Vol. 76, No. 51)

SE UNDERGRADUATE SOCIOLOGY SYMPOSIUM - CALL FOR PAPERS

This year marks the 30th Annual Southeastern Undergraduate Sociology Symposium
(SEUSS) to be held on Friday February 24th and Saturday February 25th 2012 at
Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

The theme of this year’s symposium is Identity and Inequality in Society. Of
course, papers on topics in any area of sociology are welcome.  Presenting their
research at SEUSS provides students with an opportunity to develop important
professional skills and establish social networks with students and faculty at
other southeastern schools.  Those students who submit full papers by the
January 27, 2012 deadline will also be eligible for an Award for Excellence in
Undergraduate Research.

Students must submit an abstract (or a full paper) by January 27, 2012 along
with a faculty letter of support to qualify for participation.  More information

FRESHMAN AND SOPHMORE ENGL 1102 REGISTRATION

There are a number of seats available in ENGL 1102 for the spring.  As a
reminder, freshmen must take this course before they have reached 45
hours according to the new Board of Regents policy. Sophomores must take it
before they have reached 60 hours.  Because LCC restricts fall registration to
incoming freshmen, current freshmen and sophomores MUST take ENGL 1102 this
spring.

JOB FAIR FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL TEACHING

If you are interested in teaching at a private K-12 school beginning Fall 2012,
you should consider working with Southern Teachers Agency (STA).  STA has been
around since 1902 and is a free service to prospective teachers, matching them
with independent schools across the Southeast (serving the states from Florida
up to Maryland and Virginia, and over to eastern Texas).  The middle and high
schools that use STA to recruit teachers do not require prior teacher
certification.  See www.SouthernTeachers.com for more information.

STA will host a Job Fair in Atlanta on February 10th-11th.  The deadline to
apply to attend the fair is Jan. 20th.  Part of the application process is to
register and be approved by STA (which is free and does not require a commitment
from you), so between now and the end of December would be a good time to knock
this out.  Note that while the fair is in Atlanta, schools from across the
Southeast will be in attendance.  Schools will be looking for teachers in all
fields, but there is usually a special demand for people who can teach Physics,

INVENTURE PRIZE INTENT TO COMPETE DEADLINE COMING UP

If you are an undergraduate student who is considering participating in the
InVenture Prize, you have until Friday (11/18) to submit the Intent to Compete
form. Submitting an Intent to Compete informs the Office of Undergraduate
Research and Student Innovation about your idea and assists with their
planning.  It does NOT obligate you to compete!  HTS students have great ideas,
so get inventing!

HTS CLASSES ADDED AFTER START OF REGISTRATION: BOTH STILL HAVE OPEN SEATS

Two HTS classes were added to the spring 2012 schedule after the start of
registration.  See below for details on the classes.  Phase I of spring 2012
registration runs through Friday, November 18th at 4.00 PM.  Phase II of
registration is January 4 - 13, 2012.

Note that HTS 3084 fulfills one of the "Science, Technology, and Medicine"
courses required of all HTS majors.  HTS 3086, Sociology of Medicine and Health
also fulfills this requirement (though it is currently full).

HTS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FUTURES

HTS needs volunteers for the Women's Recruitment Team event FUTURES!
FUTURES is a campus-wide recruiting event for high school women, with attendance
of about 400 women and their families expected this year.

It is being held on Monday, November 21st from 10.00 - 11.30 AM, and there will
be an academic information fair at which HTS will have a table. Two volunteers
are needed to help staff the table with Dr. D'Unger, one from 10.00 - 10.45 AM
and one from 10.45 - 11.30 AM.

HOLLAND PLANT STEAM VENTING

The Holland Plant will be venting steam during the commissioning of the # 4
boiler. This began Saturday and will begin again shortly continuing into the
evening for today & throughout the remainder of the week.

Testing & tuning throughout the full firing range on natural gas & propane has
to take place.

It will keep it as short as possible for noise control, but this task must be
completed for winter steam operation.

Witness to a Changing Conscience: Writing and Personal Transformation (HTS
3823-A, HTS 3823-HP, and LCC 3833-C


This seminar is devoted to the study of writers whose works have shaped the ways
we think about what it means to be a human being in the world of others. After
considering a cluster of seminal writing often referred to as ‘confessions,’ we
will turn our attention to writing that witnesses to fundamental transformations
in individual moral consciousness in a world rapidly being transformed by
scientific and technological development.  
The class will be open to Honor's Program students in Phase I of registration,

Phase I of registration runs through Friday, November 18th.  Dr. D'Unger will be
in Washington, D.C. at the American Society of Criminology conference Wednesday,
November 16th through Friday, November 18th.  In other words, she will not be on
campus for the final three days of Phase I registration.

FUTURES WOMEN'S RECRUITMENT TEAM EVENT

The Women's Recruitment Team's upcoming event, FUTURES, is fast approaching and
we would like YOU to represent your respective departments/majors at our annual
event. FUTURES, which will take place November 21st, is a day-long event for
high school sophomore and junior girls and their parents to expose them to life
at Georgia Tech in hopes that they will consider Tech as a second home in the
future.


Between 10 and 11:30am on the 3rd floor of the Student Center, both the students
and their parents will have the opportunity to meet you and other
representatives while browsing various majors, departments and opportunities
that are offered at Georgia Tech. As of now, we have over 400 guests registered.
This is a big turn out and you would not want to miss out on this opportunity!


If you or someone in your department would like to be in attendance please email

THIRD EDITION OF THE TOWER AVAILABLE NOW

The latest edition of Tech’s undergraduate research journal, The Tower, is now
available at stands across campus.


In addition to articles, the third edition includes interviews and fellowship
spotlights, as well as a feature in memoriam for alumnus Liam Rattray, who died
in May.


Since its inception nearly four years ago, The Tower has evolved from printing
an edition once a year to a robust resource for undergraduate research at the
Institute. The journal’s staff not only produces a print edition, but also
maintains a blog, hosts events and conducts interviews with undergraduates and
faculty members across campus.


Recent HTS graduate, Denise Bringslid has her research on GMO and its effects on
Brazil's agriculture published in this edition with her supervisor, Dr. Winders.

FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, Lettie Pate
Whitehead Foundation and Lettie Pate Evans Foundation invite applicants for the
annual Woodruff and Whitehead Foundations Fellowship. The fellowship is a
one-year opportunity for a recent college graduate to gain work experience and
exposure to the charitable sector in Atlanta. Applicants should be bright,
mature and intellectually curious. The fellow will be included as a full member
of a relatively small staff and will participate in a range of foundation
activity, from administrative tasks to in-depth meetings with grantees and grant
seekers.


The fellowship is intended to provide work experience to a recent college
graduate interested in the nonprofit sector. Applicants should be bright,
self-motivated and eager to assist foundation staff in a range of foundation
activity. Among the duties and responsibilities of the position are the
following:
 * Prepare for and participate with staff in meetings with grant applicants and
   visits to organizations seeking support. Draft memoranda summarizing such
   meetings.
 * Collaborate with staff to evaluate grants and compile grant reports.
 * Assist with general correspondence with applicants and grantees.
 * Conduct research projects on topics related to the Foundations’ grant-making.
 * Assist with office detail including correspondence, filing, photocopying and
   answering the telephone.
 * Attend all staff meetings.
 * Attend foundation association meetings and support the foundations’
   participation in association activity.


Term of Appointment: One year, approximately August 1, 2012 through July 31,
2013.


Compensation: Competitive salary plus benefits, e.g. medical and dental
insurance, retirement plan and parking.

qualifications.

The Fellowships Office is hosting two informational workshops this week. For
these awards, students with a GPA of 3.0 and above are usually most competitive.


FULBRIGHT INFORMATION SESSION

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to learn how to apply for a
Fulbright award. Students may apply as seniors, master’s students, or during the
early stages of doctoral work. Awards are available in 140 countries and may be
for research, graduate study, or English Teaching assistantships (ETAs).

SPRING PRE-TEACHING COURSES

Below are 3 "pre-teaching" courses available this spring.  CETL 4001 is the
prerequisite for both of the 4803 courses; NOTE: students who have taken 4001
may take BOTH 4803 sections at the same time.  Students in any major are welcome
in the Foundations of Science Teaching course--you just need to be interested in
science education (and have already taken 4001).  ALL these courses require a
permit.  To request the permit, go

GEORGIA INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE APPLICATION

Are you interested in leadership, cross cultural communication, and meeting
people from different cultures? From February 24-26, 2012, this conference will
bring together 200 plus of Georgia's international students and US study abroad
students for a weekend of cross-cultural training, leadership development, and
team-building.  Students from colleges or universities all over Georgia
participate in this event.  


Georgia Tech may send a total of 15 students, to be determined by the Office of
International Education (OIE).  OIE is able to pay the registration fee for ten
students and will award this to the most qualified applicants.  The remaining 5
students will need to pay the fee ($70) on their own or request a student
organization to sponsor them.  Transportation, lodging, and meals during the
conference will be provided for all students. 


To be considered for participation in GILC, please complete and submit the
student application GILC Application 2012 by November 30th.  Participants will
then be notified of their selection by December 9th, 2011. For more details,

APPLYING FOR OVERLOADS AND PERMITS

Tis the season for applying for overloads for full classes or permits for
restricted classes.  How do you do this, you might ask?  For HTS, go to the HTS
homepage and click on the "Undergraduate Program" tab at the top.  Then, click
on the "Overloads/Permits" tab on the left.  Fill out the form and hit submit. 
The direct URL is www.hts.gatech.edu/undergraduate/overloads-permits.  Easy!


Schools other than HTS handle overloads and permits in a variety of ways.  Most,
but not all, use OSCAR.  For up-to-date information on how to get an overload or
permit for all classes, go to

Outer City/Inner Suburb: The Physical and Cultural Fabric of Paris, Toulouse,
and Atlanta Beyond the Center

The focus of this event will be the banlieues of Paris and the inner suburbs of
Atlanta; as sites of significant immigrant and second-generation communities
they offer key insights into the cultural and social change occurring in France
and the United States. Academics, architects, and policy-makers will focus on
demographics, urban policy, architecture, and cultural production.
Representatives from Toulouse, Atlanta's sister city, will join the discussion
as well.

FREE GMAT PREP WORKSHOP ON NOVEMBER 12TH

Several times a year, MathSP partners with Georgia Tech's College of Management
to provide a free GMAT Prep workshop for students interested in applying to MBA
programs. The next GMAT Prep workshop is on Saturday, November 12th,  from
2pm-5pm.  As you may know, GMAT scores are valid for up to 5 years.  Although
work experience is required for most MBA programs, students can benefit greatly
from preparing for the GMAT while still in college or soon after.
