Testing Machine Learning Systems in Industry: An Empirical Study *
SMU Libraries

Machine learning becomes increasingly prevalent and integrated into a wide range
of software systems. These systems, named ML systems, must be adequately tested
to gain confidence that they behave correctly.Although many research efforts
have been devoted to testing technologies for ML systems, the industrial teams
are faced with new challenges on testing the ML systems in real-world
settings. To absorb inspirations from the industry on the problems in ML testing,
we conducted an empirical study including a survey with 87 responses and
interviews with 7 senior ML practitioners from well-known IT companies. Our study
uncovers significant industrial concerns on major testing activities, i.e., test
data collection, test execution, and test result analysis, and also the good
practices and open challenges from the perspective of the industry.(1) Test data
collection is conducted in different ways on ML model, data, and code and faced
with different challenges.(2) Test execution in ML systems suffers from two

Synthesis of N-doped sludge biochar using the hydrothermal route-enabled
carbonization method for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants by
peroxymonosulfate activation
Battuya B
16 Dec 2022
Nitrogen-doped biochar ( HT NBC) was prepared from sewage sludge via
hydrothermal route-enabled carbonization, and the optimized HT NBC was found to
efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by aiming the less consumption of
the chemicals. The optimal HT NBC degraded a 0.1 mM aqueous solution of bisphenol
A (BPA) within 10 min at a rate of 0.62 min − 1 , exhibiting a significantly
superior catalytic activity compared to that of pristine sludge biochar. The HT
NBC/PMS system effectively oxidized various organic pollutants, including BPA,
sulfamethoxazole, 4-chlorophenol, carbamazepine, and nitrobenzene with a low
consumption of PMS (1.0 mM) and a low catalyst loading (0.2 g/L).The active
sites for PMS activation were identified as graphitic-N, pyridinic-N, and
carbonyl groups, besides structural defects and a high specific surface area
were also important. The primary oxidation mechanism was anticipated to involve
non-radical pathways followed by radical-induced oxidation, in which the
surface-bound reactions dominate. The HT NBC/PMS system acts over a wide pH range
and exhibits a high resistance to the inorganic anions of natural water. Our
results indicate that nitrogen doping via a hydrothermal route allows the
fabrication of biochar with a greater abundance of oxygen functional groups, and
the specific nitrogen species present within the carbon matrix are also of
importance in the development of advanced carbon catalysts.
Correlation Between Hematological and Serological Parameters in Dengue Fever
Patients
Abin Varghese
28 Nov 2022
According to the World Health Organisation, dengue is endemic in more than 100
countries.there are an estimated 390 million or more cases of dengue annually
worldwide, and 40% of the world population.Understanding the pathophysiology of
dengue virus infection along with an early diagnosis of dengue fever with the
aid of laboratory parameters and clinical evaluation helps in the management of
dengue fever. The objective of this study was to analyze the hematological
parameters which will help in the early diagnosis of dengue syndromes. Most
patients are clinically asymptomatic. However severe dengue fever may cause
increased vascular permeability with vascular leakage, hemoconcentration,
hypovolemic shock, and bleeding manifestations due to thrombocytopenia. The
parameters studied were hemoglobin concentration, total leucocyte count,
differential leucocyte count, platelet count, and Leishman-stained peripheral
smear examination. In our study, out of 100 dengue-positive patients proven by
the ELISA method; the common laboratory finding was thrombocytopenia
(97%).Leucopenia was found in only 13% of patients and 18% of patients had
relative lymphocytosis.Of 100 patients 81% of patients showed the presence of
reactive lymphocytes. Also noted was a raised hematocrit in 21% of patients. The
correlation of dengue IgM antibody with hematological parameters was studied. The
severity of thrombocytopenia depends inversely on the titre of antibody level in
the patient.

Enhancing the Potential of Eisenia foetida and Eudrillus eugeniae Species and
their Valorization in Tannery Leather Industry Sludge Management via
Vermicomposting with Bamboo Biochar Amendment
Chuthamat Mongchu

The wastewater treatment process produces the tannery leather sludge, a waste
product with high chromium content which has the potential to contaminate the
environment. The ability of earthworms to detoxify heavy metals in sludge through
vermicomposting has also been studied. However, heavy metals in tannery sludge
can affect the growth, reproduction, and mortality of earthworms and
microbes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the enhancement of the
potential of earthworms, Eisenia foetida and Eudrillus eugeniae species in the
tannery-leather industry sludge management through vermicomposting with bamboo
biochar amendment, chromium detoxification, and their valorization
efficiency. The study was conducted by using tannery leather sludge (S) with
biochar (B) in different proportions viz.S0%:B0%, S0%:B10%, S2.5%:B7.5%,S5%:B5%,
S7.5%:B2.5%,and S10%:B0% on a dry weight basis by E. foetida and E. eugeniae
species for 45 days.E. foetida produced the highest change in the weight of
earthworms and the highest cocoon production when vermicomposting with mixed
tannery leather sludge and biochar.Overall, the earthworm growth in number,
weight, and cocoon production was dominant in the treatment with
S7.5%:B2.5%+E.foetida.The total nitrogen (TN) (%), and total phosphorus (TP) (%)
increased the most when mixed with biochar amendment, with reduced pH, EC, and
organic carbon (OC) (%), and reduced total chromium by up to 70%.The results
indicated that adding bamboo biochar amendment could enhance the potential of E.
foetida and E. eugeniae species and their valorization in the tannery-leather
industry sludge management via vermicomposting.E. foetida has high potential and
is more suitable for vermicomposting in tannery leather sludge management, and
provides high nutrients in a short period and could provide guidance for
sustainable waste management using biotechnology.
Wastewater treatment using nano bimetallic iron/copper, adsorption isotherm,
kinetic studies, and artificial intelligence neural networks
Mohamed Said Mahmoud

Industrial effluents introduce a huge amount of organic load into municipal
wastewater.Organic contaminants such as carbohydrates, starch, and fats increase
the COD levels to unallowable limits to be discharged into sewage systems. This
study successfully prepared Fe/Cu NPs by using the drop by drop method and
characterized them using XRD, SEM, and EDAX analysis. The effect of operating
experiments was studied at different pH, NP doses, operating times, stirring
rates, and initial COD concentrations. The removal efficiencies were between 100
and 69% and between 100 and 800 mg/L for initial COD concentrations at pH 7, NP
dose 0.6 g/L, 15 min, and 150 rpm.The adsorption isotherms were studied by
applying nonlinear equations of Redlich-Peterson, Hill, Sips, Khan, Toth,
Koble-Corrigan, Jovanovic, Freundlich, and Langmuir models. The obtained results
indicated that Fe/Cu NPs accept both Koble-Corrigan and Freundlich models with
the lowest ∑ = 1.3304.The kinetic analysis was carried by practicing nonlinear
equations of pseudo first order (PFO), pseudo second order (PSO), and Elovich,
Avrami, and intraparticle kinetic models. The obtained results indicated that
Fe/Cu NPs accept the Avrami mechanism with the lowest ∑ = 0.046.The ANNs were
trained 28 times and tested 8 times using network structure 6-3-1 indicating
that the most significant operating parameter is the effect of concentration
100% followed by the effect of dose 61.1% with a small deviation between the
predictive and actual results.RSM relations indicating the positive linear
effect of the independent variable "pH," "dose," "time," and "initial
concentration" with p-value < 0.05 and insignificant effect for stirring rate
with p-value > 0.05.
Pre-Analytical Variables In Coagulation Studies
Abin Varghese

Background: All coagulation tests critically depend on the quality of the plasma
specimens obtained.Pre-analytical variability is a common source of errors in
coagulation testing, as clotting assays are susceptible to poor standardization
of the whole analytical process. Many misleading results in blood coagulation
arise not from errors in testing but from carelessness in the preanalytical
phase.Pre-analytical factors influencing the reliability of laboratory testing
are commonplace.Control is critical, since this has a direct influence on the
quality of results and their clinical reliability.Internal Quality control
should be maintained while performing the tests in the laboratory.Aim: The aim
of the study was to evaluate pre-analytical variables that influence the
coagulation tests results.Materials and Methods: A sample size of 100 were
included in the study. The Pre-analytical variables during the sample collection
and processing were analysed as per the proforma. Results: It was found that the
entire collection was done by vacutainer system.83% of the collections were from
non-fasting patients.Regarding tourniquet application, all the 100 were
collected with tourniquet application.Of that 15 were applied for over one
minute and 41% of the samples showed frothing. The tube order (2 nd ) of
collection as per the NCCLS guidelines was followed for 96 samples.Mixing was
adequate by inverting the tube (8-10) times for most (97%) of the collections. It
was found that, the volume was inappropriate for 26 samples. And it was found
that the samples were transported to the laboratory from the outpatient sample
collection room within the stipulated time.Ninety three out of hundred samples
were centrifuged at a speed range of 4000-4500rpm.There was a yield of <10000/ul
platelet in the PPP from 44 samples which is the acceptable limit, and the
remaining 49 samples had a platelet count in the range10,000-60,000/ul.Of the
49samples, thirty six samples showed a platelet count in the
range10,000-20,000/ul,9samples were in between 21,000-40,000/ul and 3 samples in
the range of 41000-60000/ul.Among the 49 samples, only 2 samples showed platelet
count of 50,000-60,000 and their PT and aPTT were affected. The occurrence of
high platelet count may be due to the variation in the centrifugation speed. It
was found that not even a single sample was lysed or clotted.Although, 83% of
the collections were from non-fasting patients, the plasma was clear and there
was no significant lipemia. It was also found that the three samples high HCT (>
55%) of the sample if not corrected, leads to false prolongation of the
results. The time lapse between the sample collection and the report despatch was
analysed and found that for 92 out of 100 samples, the turnaround time was
within the acceptable limits as defined by the laboratory. Conclusion: Among the
pre-analytical variables analysed in the study, tourniquet application, duration
of application, order of draw, method of collection and mixing and
centrifugation duration were found to be well under control.A better control is
required in centrifugation speed to obtain PPP where the platelet count is less
than 10000/ul.
Assessment of depression, anxiety and stress levels in the Ecuadorian general
population during social isolation due to the COVID-19 outbreak: a
cross-sectional study
Geovanny Alvarado Villa

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic
with serious consequences that have led to the implementation of unprecedented
social isolation measures. At the early stages of the pandemic, Ecuador was one
of the most affected countries in Latin America. The objective of this study was
to assess the levels of depression, anxiety and stress in the Ecuadorian general
population during the social isolation period due to COVID-19.Methods: A
web-based survey consisting of 31 short-answer and multiple-choice questions was
administered to the general population from April 22-May 3, 2020.Mental health
status was assessed through the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Items
(DASS-21) questionnaire.Ordinal logistic analyses were used to identify
potential risk factors associated with the severity of mental health
issues. Results: A total of 626 individuals were included. Most of them were
females (60.5%), and their mean age was 29.6 ± 11.7 years.Approximately 17.7% of
the respondents had moderate to very severe levels of depression, 30.7% had
similar levels of anxiety, and 14.2% experienced stress.Female sex, younger age,
student status, and having a relative diagnosed with COVID-19 were associated
with significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress.Ordinal
regression models showed that being a student was a risk factor for having more
severe levels of depression (OR = 3.67; 95% CI = 2.56-5.26,p: 0.0001), anxiety
(OR= 1.86; 95% CI= 1.35-2.55,p: 0.0001), and stress (OR = 2.17; 95% CI=
1.47-3.19,p: 0.0001).Having a relative with COVID-19 was also found to be a risk
factor only for depression (OR= 1.70; 95% CI= 1.03-2.80,p: 0.036) and anxiety
(OR = 2.17; 95% CI= 1.35-3.47,p: 0.001).Additionally, male sex, older age, and
having more children were found to be protective factors for the three
conditions.
Significance Of Ferritin In Pregnancy Associated Iron Deficiency Anemia, GDM And
Other Complications
Abin Varghese

Purpose: Analysis of ferritin is very important in pregnancy for predicting risk
factors such as GDM, IDA, preeclampsia, preterm delivery, childbirth weight, and
other pregnancy-related complications. The only commonly used laboratory test for
determining iron reserves is the determination of serum ferritin
concentration. As a result, the complications associated with ferritin is caused
by an increase or decrease in body iron stores.Methodology: The review is
intended to look into the impact of ferritin in pregnancy.Sources of data and
study selection: Relevant articles were chosen through a database search on
Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. The journal papers were chosen from
the years 2015 to 2022, with the majority falling between 2017 and 2022.Excludes
papers published before 2015 and reviewed only fulltext articles.Findings: We
investigated the bond between serum ferritin levels and pregnancy-related
complications in this systematic review. We discovered that high maternal serum
ferritin levels play an important role in the occurrence of GDM.We've also
discovered that ferritin in gestating women can be implicated as a marker for
preeclampsia, preterm birth, and decreased ferritin levels are related with IDA
and low birth weight. We also discovered some negative correlations. As a result,
more research is needed to establish this relationship and identify vulnerable
populations.Paper Type: Systematic Review Paper.

plans in plan library were obtained based on the mechanism model (Activated
Sludge Models) of a pilot Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (A 2 /O) process, and each plan
represents the optimal operation strategy under a specific influent
condition. Then the plan library was input to train a data driven model, i.e. a
Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) regression model. The trained MLP model can be used
to generate more detailed online operation strategies for wastewater treatment
process under different influent conditions. After a 124 days continuous
operation of the A 2 /O process, the results shown, the proposed method can
generate online operation strategies according to influent conditions, and the
main effluent indicators meet the discharge standards continuously and
stably.Meanwhile, compared with the manual operation mode, the aeration energy
consumption was saved about 49.4 % by using the proposed method. The mechanism
model and data-driven model were combined in this study, and it has scientific
value and engineering significance for intelligent management of WWTPs.
Transtornos depressivos e pessoas idosas: um estudo bibliométrico depressive
disorders in elderly people: a bibliometric study

VOSviewer efetuou as análises bibliométricas.Foram gerados dois bancos para
explorar e aprofundar os dados referentes aos sintomas dos transtornos
depressivos em idosos e sua dinâmica durante a pandemia da COVID 19, que trouxe
modificações diretas e bruscas no comportamento social e psíquico.Os resultados
encontrados corroboram com a literatura e teorias referentes ao envelhecimento e
saúde mental, reportando sintomas clássicos, associação com as comorbidades e a
predominância de pesquisas desenvolvidas pela medicina e suas vertentes. No
A New Strategic Marketing Management Model for the Specificities of E-Commerce
in the Supply Chain
Kavitha Prithiviraj
24 Mar 2021
The study seeks to answer the question of what strategic directions and
opportunities we have for business in the midst of the info-communication
changes of our time.In this research, we compare the results of
non-representative primary research (cluster analysis and discriminant analysis)
with the factors and latest methods of e-commerce or even mobile commerce and
traditional commerce and their main differences.Based on the four clusters
examined, we develop a new strategic model for practice with suggestions which
can be used by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and which they can
incorporate directly into their business models.Starting point of our hypothesis
was that in order to develop an effective and delivered communication, a market
needs to be targeted and at least four different clusters should be formulated.
Progress, challenges, and prospects of MOF-based adsorbents for phosphate
recovery from wastewater
Battuya B
26 May 2024
Phosphate is a vital component for the proper functioning of organisms. However,
when excessive amounts of phosphate are introduced into aquatic environments, it
can lead to eutrophication, which contributes to the formation of detrimental
algal blooms. These blooms present significant threats to ecological balance,
water quality, and human health. To mitigate and prevent eutrophication, the
removal and recovery of phosphate is highly desired. The adsorption technique,
utilizing a range of sorbents like activated carbon and natural minerals, proves
to be a remarkably effective, economical, and eco-friendly approach used to
eliminate phosphate from wastewater.Among them, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)
have garnered significant consideration recently as promising porous materials
with potential environmental applications.MOFs possess exceptional
characteristics, including substantial porosity, high surface area, controllable
pore dimensions, unique architecture, flexible surface chemistry with diverse
functional groups, and stability across a broad range of pH and
temperature. These attributes make them highly suitable as adsorbents for
phosphate recovery compared to other commonly utilized adsorbents. This review
centers on the latest advancements in using MOFs for phosphate removal. It covers
various aspects, including synthesis methods, properties, factors affecting
phosphate removal, regeneration, and the underlying mechanisms involved in
removing phosphate by these adsorbents. The review also addresses the challenges
and limitations associated with the practical application of MOFs for phosphate
recovery.Furthermore, it highlights potential avenues for future research aimed
at advancing the use of MOFs in phosphate recovery.
Immature Platelet Fraction: A Promising Biomarker in Various Clinical Entities
Abin Varghese

Reticulated platelets are immature platelets circulating in blood; they reflect
the activity of megakaryopoiesis in the bone marrow. Therefore, they can be used
as a non-invasive test in patients with thrombocytopenia in various clinical
conditions. Reticulated or immature platelet assays are useful for the
differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia and for monitoring bone marrow
recovery after chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation and several other
clinical entities. The concentration of retPLT in bone marrow is on the average
2-3 times higher than in peripheral blood, where they correlate with
megakaryocyte numbers. The platelets persist in the circulation for 7-10 days,
retPLT have a much shorter lifespan ( < 1 day). Therefore they can act as a
marker of megakaryopoietic activity in the bone marrow which gives retPLT
clinical and diagnostic utility. This review provides an overview of the
clinical conditions in which reticulated platelets or immature platelets can be
considered as a diagnostic tool or prognostic tool. This overview also indicates
that more research is needed before reticulated or immature platelet assays can
be applied in other clinical conditions than thrombocytopenia and after
transplantation.
Voluntary exercise improves sperm parameters in high fat diet receiving rats
through alteration in testicular oxidative stress, mir-34a/SIRT1/p53 and
apoptosis
Gholamreza Hamidian
07 Feb 2021
Objectives: High fat diet can lead to testicular structural and functional
disturbances, spermatogenesis disorders as well as infertility. So, the present
investigation was proposed to clarify whether voluntary exercise could prevent
high fat diet induced reproductive complications in rats through testicular
stress oxidative and apoptosis. Methods: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly
divided into four groups; control (C), voluntary exercise (VE), high fat diet
(HFD) and high fat diet and voluntary exercise (VE + HFD) groups. The rats in the
VE and VE + HFD groups were accommodated in apart cages that had running wheels
and the running distance was assessed daily for 10 weeks. In VE + HFD group,
animals were fed with HFD for five weeks before commencing exercise. The sperm
parameters, the expressions of testicular miR-34a gene, and P53 and SIRT1
proteins as well as testicular apoptosis were analyzed in all groups. Results:
The results indicated that voluntary exercise in VE + HFD group led to
significantly increased GPX and SOD activities, SIRT1 protein expression, sperm
parameters, and decreased the expression of miR34a gene and Acp53 protein, and
cellular apoptosis index compared to HFD group (p<0.001 to p<0.05).The SOD and
catalase activities, SIRT1 protein expression, sperm parameters in VE + HFD
group were lower than of those of VE group, however, MDA content, expression of
Acp53 protein, apoptosis indexes in VE + HFD group was higher than that of VE
group (p<0.001 to p<0.05). Conclusion:This study revealed that voluntary
exercise improved spermatogenesis, in part by decreasing the testicular
oxidative stress status, apoptosis through alteration in miR-34a/SIRT1/p53
pathway.
Nucleic Acid Vaccines: A Rising Antidote for the Future
Supriya Kammar

DNA vaccines, a type of nucleic acid vaccine, have emerged as one of the recent
developments in immunology and recombinant DNA technology, offering great
potential in terms of ease of manufacture, maintenance, and safety compared to
conventional vaccines.Since their discovery, DNA vaccines have evolved
immensely, resulting in the employment of new techniques such as gene guns, in
vivo electroporation, and nanoparticle-based carriers to enhance the delivery of
vaccines into the cells.Starting from the failures of the first-generation DNA
vaccines to the near-success second-generation vaccines, several strategies
including codon optimization, antigen design, and heterologous prime-boost have
greatly helped in strengthening the vaccine's immunogenicity. The purpose of
developing these third-generation vaccines is primarily to solve existing
medical complications like cancer, along with therapeutic uses, to address
health problems, and to aid the rapid eradication of sudden global outbreaks of
infectious diseases including Ebola and COVID-19.In this review, we focus on the
recent developments and strategies employed to improve the efficacy of DNA
vaccines and discuss their mechanism of action, potential concerns, progress
achieved, and a brief update on its clinical applications.

Performance of the Dual-Chamber Fungal Fuel Cell in Treating Tannery Wastewater
Mohamed Said Mahmoud
25 Sep 2023
Fungi are typically expressed as excellent microorganisms that produce
extracellular enzymes used in the bioaccumulation phenomenon. In this study,
laboratory-scale dual-chamber fungal fuel cells (FFCs) were applied as an
alternate approach for the available degradation of complex organic pollutants
represented in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN), as well as
inorganic pollutants represented as total chromium (Cr), and the generation of
bioenergy represented in output voltages (V), power density (PD) and current
density (CD), as applied to tannery effluent.Aspergillus niger strain,
(A.niger), which makes up 40% of the fungal population in tannery effluent was
examined in a training study for efficient hexavalent chromium bioaccumulation,
especially in high concentrations. The trained A. niger showed a faster growth
rate than the untrained one in broth media containing different loaded chromium
concentrations. For an external resistance of 1000 Ω, two FFCs were utilized, one
with electrolytic matrices including phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and
bicarbonate buffer solution (BBS), and the other without electrolytic matrices,
where the energy generation and treatment efficacy of the two dual-chamber FFCs
were evaluated for a period of 165 h.At 15 h, the electrolytic FFCs showed a
high voltage output of 0.814 V, a power density of 0.097 mW•m −2 , and a current
density of 0.119 mAm −2 compared to the non-electrolytic FFC.At 165 h, the
electrolytic FFCs showed high removal efficiency percentages for COD, TN, and
total Cr of up to 77.9%, 94.2%, and 73%, respectively, compared to the
non-electrolytic FFC.

This is perfect for a layman to scientific information like me. Especially with
so much misinformation floating around nowadays, this is great for understanding
studies or research others may have misrepresented on purpose or by accident.

I absolutely adore this product. It's been years since I was in a lab but, I
plugged in a study I did way back when and this gets everything right.
Equations, hypotheses, and methodologies will be game changers for graduate
studies (the current education system severely limits comprehension while
encouraging interconnectivity between streams). But, early learners would be
able to discover so many papers through this as well. In short, love it

I'm gonna recommend SciSpace to all of my friends and family that are still
studying. And I'll definitely love to give it a try for myself, cause you know,
education should never stop when you finish your studies. 😀

SciSpace, is a website where you can easily conduct research. Its most notable
feature, in my opinion, is the presence of a #ai-powered copilot which can
#simplify and explain any text you highlight in the paper you're reading.
#citations and related papers are easily accessible with each paper.

It´s not only the saved time. Reading scientific literature, specially if you
are not an expert in the field is a very attention-intensive process. It´s not a
task you can maintain for long periods of time. Having them not just smartly
summarised but being able to get meaningful answers is a game-changer for a
science journalist

Upload your pdf and highlight the sections you want to understand. It simplifies
those complicated sections of the article in a jiffy. It is not rocket science,
but it is always welcome if someone explains the big terms in simpler words.
