More info Thank you for subscribingWe have more newslettersShow meSee ourprivacy notice A MAN who set fire to a moving train as he made his way home from a night out high on drink and drugs has been jailed for two years. Mithilan Kathirgamanathan, 22, boarded the train at Waterloo and walked up and down the carriages collecting newspapers and throwing them around, Guildford Crown Court heard on Friday. He then set them ablaze with a lighter in a first class compartment causing damage valued at more than £3,000 as the train approached Woking station, where he made his escape. Two carriages were filled with smoke as the train pulled in and staff, along with an off-duty firefighter, fought to put out the flames. Kathirgamanathan, of Westfield Avenue, Woking, pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was in danger. Toyin Salako, prosecuting, told the court that Kathirgamanathan had been out in London where he had been drinking heavily and had taken cannabis and a tablet believed to be the drug ecstasy. Despite his intoxicated state, he had managed to catch the train home from Waterloo. She said: “One of the passengers saw the fire coming from the first class area. Thankfully before he left the carriage he noticed there was a man asleep and was able to wake him up.” The court heard that officers were able to identify the defendant from CCTV footage from the station and he was later arrested. PROMOTED STORIES Marcus Tregilgas-Davey, for Kathirgamanathan, told the court that at the time Kathirgamanathan had lost his degree place at university due to lack of finance and his misuse of drugs and alcohol, and had become a father unexpectedly. He said: “He was too immature to cope with being a man with responsibilities and too immature to cope with the loss of his degree course. He is truly sorry for his actions.” Mr Tregilgas-Davey said that Kathirgamanathan was now taking his responsibilities very seriously and was no longer going out clubbing and drinking. Judge Derek Inman told Kathirgamanathan: “You caused a considerable amount of damage. I accept, as you should, that you now exhibit serious remorse and realise it was more good fortune that this fire did not get out of control and cause more damage and, more importantly, more damage to the lives of the people who were on that moving train. “I am of the view that this offence is so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified.” South West Trains welcomed the sentence given to Kathirgamanathan. SWT’s Richard Allen said: “We are pleased to see the courts have taken the vandalism of public transport seriously.” Follow SurreyLive FacebookTwitter PROMOTED STORIES More On * Courts * Westfield * Woking Most Read 1 Imber Court will not host fireworks display next year after disastrous event on Friday 2 Homes evacuated in Ashford after WW2 'metal artefacts' found in garden 3 One dead and one in hospital after second storey flat fire in Sutton 4 Suspected WW2 bomb in Ashford turns out to be wartime 'metal artefacts' including helmets 5 Chaos at Imber Court fireworks left 'kids crying with disappointment' Recommended Venue will not host fireworks next year after disastrous event The East Molesey venue has hosted fireworks celebrations for 52 years Homes evacuated in Surrey town after discovery of WW2 'metal artefacts' It was initially reported that an unexploded bomb had been located One person has died after a fire in a second storey flat fire The three-roomed flat was destroyed by the blaze Suspected Ashford WW2 bomb turns out to be wartime 'metal artefacts' Residents in Doris Road were evacuated but have since been allowed to return to their homes Chaos at fireworks left 'kids crying with disappointment' Many who attended the festivities were left outraged by the overcrowding and what they felt was a lack of safety measures at the display PROMOTED STORIES * News * all * Most Read * Most Recent East MoleseyImber Court will not host fireworks display next year after disastrous event on FridayThe East Molesey venue has hosted fireworks celebrations for 52 years Homes evacuated in Ashford after WW2 'metal artefacts' found in garden AshfordIt was initially reported that an unexploded bomb had been located Suspected WW2 bomb in Ashford turns out to be wartime 'metal artefacts' including helmets AshfordResidents in Doris Road were evacuated but have since been allowed to return to their homes One dead and one in hospital after second storey flat fire in Sutton Surrey NewsThe three-roomed flat was destroyed by the blaze Chaos at Imber Court fireworks left 'kids crying with disappointment' East MoleseyMany who attended the festivities were left outraged by the overcrowding and what they felt was a lack of safety measures at the display AppleWalk-in vaccination sites in and around Surrey for the Covid booster jabThe latest information on when and where you can find a walk-in appointment Gatwick and Heathrow: The US eases travel restrictions, but what are the entry requirements?
