You can begin your first aid training by taking an introductory first aid
course. You can also advance to more complex courses that teach cardiopulmonary
resuscitation. When you complete a first aid course, you will learn the DRSABCD
action plan – Doctor’s ABCD- each letter representing a specific first aid
action.
BASICS OF FIRST AID
This course trains people to perform first aid and provide emergency medical
assistance. The course teaches the basics of first aid, such as identifying and
treating bleeding and shock. However, the course does not provide official
certification. Typically, a practical hands-on course is required to receive
official certification. The course is only one hour long and will teach you the
basics of providing medical care. However, it is helpful to have some basic
first-aid knowledge, even if you do not intend to work in the medical field.
In addition to providing medical care, basic first aid knowledge can improve
self-confidence and relationships with others. Moreover, it can help you protect
yourself from harm in non-medical situations.
REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETING A FIRST AID COURSE
Whether you want to be a professional first aider or a casual bystander, first
aid courses can be an invaluable asset. A Red Cross-certified course can take as
little as a day to complete. The course focuses on basic first aid skills and
knowledge and provides the tools to handle a medical emergency while you wait
for help. After the course, you’ll receive a certificate and access to
refreshers to keep your skills current.
Many people undertake a first aid course as a required course at work, but the
course is available for anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge of basic
first aid. The program covers CPR and how to use essential first-aid equipment.
It is also very cost-effective and convenient.
Depending on the course, you may have to wear appropriate casual clothing. You
may need to kneel on the floor to perform first aid demonstrations, which can be
challenging for some people. Additionally, if you’re unable to do so, you may

infant CPR or oxygen administration training. The first aid course certificate
is valid for two years.
Heartsaver CPR/AED is a video and classroom-based first aid program that teaches
lifesaving skills in an emergency. It teaches participants to use CPR with an
AED, perform barrier devices, and identify the symptoms of four significant
emergencies. The course is also ideal for childcare providers and other
caregivers. Healthcare providers can take a separate course that includes AED
training, which costs an additional $50.
The cost of a first aid course can vary, depending on how many people attend and
what’s included. There are basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
classes, pediatric CPR, and more. Depending on the class type, a class can cost
between $50 and $75. A two-hour CPR course, for example, costs about $35 per
