TOKYO EMERGING MANAGER PROGRAM

The Tokyo Emerging Managers Program (Tokyo EMP) promotes the allocation of early
stage investments from institutional asset owners to Japan based emerging
managers.
Visual Alpha (VA) works with FinCity.Tokyo (FCT) to promote Japanese emerging
managers to overseas and domestic asset owners through research, interviews,
matching events, and conferences.


ABOUT FINCITY.TOKYO

FinCity.Tokyo is a financial promotion organization with a mission for upgrading
Tokyo's financial ecosystem, established April 2019. FinCity.Tokyo aims to boost
the attractiveness of Tokyo's financial markets and raise its profile as a
global top-class financial city, while conducting various promotional activities
through private–public partnerships.

ELIGIBLE EMERGING MANAGERS

We select outstanding new managers based in Japan that fit the following
criteria:
 * Established within 6 years (private asset managers within 10 years)

 * Have an innovative, unique, and performance-winning investment strategy

JAPAN EMERGING MANAGER CATALOGUE

Here is the Catalogue of Japanese EMs including those who hasn’t joined Tokyo
EMP.
This catalogue is sourced by VA and FCT team from the official registration
lists, industry network and 3rd party databases.

EMERGING MANAGERS AND ASSET OWNERS MATCHING EVENT

This event provides opportunities for asset owners around the world to learn
more about a select group of emerging managers from Japan. It will be organized
on a bi-annual basis by VA and FCT team.
 
1️⃣
Selection - The AO can view the details of all EMs joined Tokyo EMP and choose
interested EMs for online interviews.
2️⃣
Interview - All selected EMs will present to the AO one by one during an online
virtual event. Each EM will have about 20 minutes time.
3️⃣
Review - We will collect feedback and follow up for future improvement.
 

GLOBAL ASSET OWNERS SURVEY

We interviewed a wide range of institutional asset owners (AOs) about their EM
investment strategy. In 2022, close to 20 large (total AUM > US$5 trillion)
overseas asset owners were surveyed, including pension funds, sovereign wealth
funds, endowments, etc. In 2023, we have extended the survey to another about 20
prestigious institutional asset owners globally.

TOKYO ASSET MANAGEMENT FORUM

Tokyo Asset Management Forum (TAMF) is a half-day conference that introduces
emerging asset managers and provides information related to asset management
business. Every year, a variety of both domestic and overseas emerging asset
managers share the stage to present their investment approach. The forum also
hosts expert speakers from government agencies, international asset owners, and
Japanese asset owners to share their perspectives through lectures and panel
discussions.

The 2025 TAMF will be held on Feb 24, 2025 in Tokyo (online event available).
