Our world is radically different, and changing fast. PERSONALIZED LEARNING Picture a world where your child sets the pace and learns at their own speed, and is free to pursue their own interests HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT We know more about how we learn and that learning is not just about rote memorization or cognitive skills. Learning requires nurturing the cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual. PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE Ours is the first generation in the history of humankind to not know what careers will exist 15 years from now. Instead of using dated curriculum we must help children learn to learn, through their lives. "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" DOESN'T WORK Over the last 100 years, the world has changed immensely, with new technologies and ways of life emerging. Surprisingly, schools haven't changed much. Rigid Curriculum Traditional schools often use unchanged curriculum and old ways of teaching that may not be interesting, scientific or helpful for all students. Teaching To Test An emphasis on standardized curriculum on testing almost always turns into an emphasis on shallow surface skills and teaching to test. No Personal Attention Traditional schools have far too many students in one class. Teachers simply do not have enough time to help students with their unique needs. WHAT ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS FOCUS ON There are are multiple alternatives to age-segregated education and fixed curricula Project Based Learning Traditional curricula divide knowledge into arbitrary silos. But as we eventually discover as adults, knowledge is interlinked. Projects do this naturally by weaving in multiple aspects. Many alternative schools use projects instead of textbooks to help foster learning. Real-World Skills The biggest complaint of employers is how woefully unprepared graduates are. That is a tragedy when you consider the hundreds of millions who have undergone decades of schooling. Alternative schools connect learning to meaningful skills. Learning comes naturally when students find mind in what they are doing. Holistic Development We are heading into a future where intelligence will be commoditized. A trait we once thought was unique to us and valuable will now be available on billions of smartphones in a few years. Ever more than before, it makes sense to do what is natural – focus on all aspects of human development instead of obsessing with the cognitive. DESIRABLE DIFFICULTIES & CHALLENGES Alternative schooling does not mean kids do as they please and laze around. Good alternative approaches find ways to make challenges meaningful. EMBRACING EXPLORATION Traditional schools stigmatize mistakes and create the wrong illusion that there is one right method. The world is complex, interconnected, and changing. What was right once can quickly become wrong. And there is one path to excellence. SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING Life does not come with textbooks, teachers, and tests. We have to figure it out. On our own and with the help of our tribe. MAKING IT MEANINGFUL We are meaning making machines. Our superpower is taking in ambiguity and ignorance and transforming it into meaningful patterns. Traditional schooling hides the real and cocoons children in the abstract and arbitrary. COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT NON-TRADITIONAL EDUCATION So many of us think that our current education system is good because it has survived the test of time. We forget how recent it is and what its roots are. Children who do not go to regular schools lack socialization skills and are often weird. Myth #1 Children, whether they are homeschooled or in alternative schools that allow them to discover their self, are often far more well adjusted and mature. The Fact ALTERNATIVE APPROACH / TRADITIONAL EXCELLENCE Alternative schooling and homeschooling offer a path to unconventional careers.
