INSPIRING WALKING ROUTES

Welcome to the Walking Post, a home for inspiring walking route ideas in Surrey,
Kent, London and further afield. We love being able to take the train out of
London and into the countryside. There are so many beautiful places less than an
hour by train away from the city. And so many footpaths to discover. Most routes
start and finish at train stations but you can also head out in the car, or even
in some cases, walk out of the city! See map of all routes.

HOW TO USE THE WALKS

Our walks are available to use and follow on  the OS maps app. You can also
download the maps via GPX files for Ordnance Survey, Strava, Apple & Garmin
watches among others. You can also follow the written directions if you’d prefer
or just take a route idea and adapt it to suit yourself. We’ve grouped the walks
into themes but there are no rules about taking any of the walks in a particular
season or for a particular purpose.

How It Works



ABOUT US

We’re Lucy and Emily, walking buddies who go out on hikes from London most
weekends with a group of friends, and also lead public walks open to all. The
Walking Post is a compilation of our favourite walking routes in South East
England and beyond, along with general inspiration for your next ramble via our
blog. All the walking routes featured have been created by Lucy and road-tested
by all of us. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

FEATURED WALKS AROUND LONDON


THROUGH LONDON BY DOCKS & WATERWAYS

Starting at the Tower of London, this route follows a docklands and waterway to
Islington in North London hardly stepping on a road.
7.5 miles 


ULTIMATE GREENWICH & THAMES BARRIER

Featuring film locations like the Old Royal Naval College and Ranger’s House,
famous landmarks like the Cutty Sark and some great views of London along the
way.
8.2 miles 


RYE LANE FILM LOCATIONS

This route includes as many South London location as possible from the 2023 film
Rye Lane. Starting in the peaceful walled garden, Brockwell Park and finishing
in the vibrant Rye Lane, Peckham.
4 miles 


HISTORICAL CITY OF LONDON

This walk combines some of London’s most famous landmarks like the Tower of
London and St Paul’s Cathedral with some cobbled back streets and hidden gems.
6 miles 


FEATURED WALKS SURREY & SUSSEX


HISTORIC LOVELACE BRIDGES & HORSLEY TOWERS

A Lord Lovelace extravanganza! Set in beautiful Surrey woodland this route
covers all 9 existing Lovelace bridges plus Horsley Towers, mausoleum and
gatehouses.
9.3 miles 


BALCOMBE TO WAKEHURST

This beautiful loop walk takes you over the rolling hills of West Sussex,
through woods and fields to the botanic gardens at Wakehurst.
5 miles 

 


BLUEBELL WOODS & VINEYARD

A pretty walk of varied landscapes across the Surrey Hills, featuring Effingham
Forest, the largest vineyard in England and spectacular carpets of bluebells
when they’re in season.
6 – 10 miles 


BROOKWOOD CEMETERY LOOP

You could spend a full day looking around fascinating Grade 1 listed Brookwood
Cemetery but this circular route also includes Morgan Stanley’s grave memorial
plus  lovely heathland and secluded Henleypark Lake .
7.9 miles 


FEATURED WALKS IN KENT


WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER

This is a stunning, quintessentially English walk ascends to the top of the
White Cliffs and follows the coastal path to seaside town of Deal.
10.5 miles


WHITE CLIFFS & KENTISH FIELDS

You take in all the stunning views over Dover port and the sea , plus pretty
inland route to Walmer.
9.1 miles


CLASSIC EAST KENT COAST

Combine bracing cliff-top or beach walking with opportunities for swimming, rock
pooling and ice cream.
9.2 miles/ 14.8 km


KENTISH COUNTRYSIDE

Combining woodland, fields, historic villages, a majestic mausoleum and a public
footpath through a huge orchard.
8.9 miles/ 14.3 km

ST ALBANS TO HARPENDEN

Covering historic St Albans, the new forest of Heartwood, Childwickbury House
and more.

LONG DISTANCE TRAILS


NORTH TO SOUTH TRAIL

Our very own trail! This route stretches from Cockfosters in the far north of
London all the way to Carshalton in the south. It traverses the capital,
connecting footpaths, waterways and green spaces.


LONDON TO BRIGHTON WALK

Another Walking Post original. This 70 mile route starts at the end of the North
to South Trail and covers some of the best countryside in Surrey and Sussex all
the way to the sea at Brighton.


VANGUARD WAY

At 66 miles, this long distance walking trail is an ideal choice for heading
south out of London.  It runs all the way from East Croydon to the South  Coast.
