CARLYLE CHARITY FUND 07 03,2022 12:00:00 Carlyle Charity Fund was established in January 2008 using 10% of the annual profit of Carlyle Fund. Since its establishment, as of the end of 2020, Carlyle Charity Fund has received more than 5 million donations and trusts, and received more than US$500 million has helped more than 12 million people improve their plight and live a more dignified life. Carlyle Charitable Fund provides people with the skills and resources needed to generate income and meet basic needs. Our projects also support economic growth and begin to address wider social inequality, which can improve human welfare, opportunities and skills, especially the most vulnerable groups: women, children and young people, and vulnerable communities. Despite economic growth in the Emerging Markets, social and economic inequalities continue to increase and communities lack the skills and resources needed to participate fully in economic development. The Carlyle Charity Fund believes that with the right support the most marginalised and disadvantaged communities can grow and prosper. The Carlyle Charity Fund seeks to work with organisations that meet a clearly defined social need for disadvantaged and low-income groups and show success in implementing interventions that make a positive change. Organisations should be able to demonstrate clarity of purpose, grassroots engagement and empowerment of communities, tangible positive outcomes, cost-effectiveness, accountability and a sustainable approach to the social and economic development of communities. Providing opportunities for skills training in marginalised communities plays a vital part in developing sustainable livelihoods and in people being able to provide for the basic needs of their families. We seek to work with organisations that deliver programmes and provide resources people need to access independent dignified livelihoods, reduce their vulnerability and provide a sustainable means by which to support themselves. In working to ensure the wellbeing of vulnerable communities, The Carlyle Foundation endeavours to provide children and young people with a safe environment in which they can grow and focus on their education, empowering them to reduce their vulnerability to factors such as poverty, violence and trafficking. We also seek to work with organisations that defend the rights of children and young people and provide support to those from marginalised communities as they enter mainstream society. Our approach aims to equip people with skills and opportunities to enable them to become self-sufficient and not rely on external assistance. To this end, we support organisations focused on enduring support that lasts long beyond a projects’ end. Emerging Markets populations are often vulnerable with little access to resources, influence, information and decision-making, which in turn leads to political, social and economic exclusion. Poverty and inequality often push people to live on the margins in places that are risky, such as alongside rivers, floodplains, marginal land and hillsides, a contributing factor to vulnerable populations often being the most severely impacted in times of emergencies. With the comparative cost of natural disasters as a percentage of GDP being far higher in Emerging Markets than Developed Markets, The Carlyle Foundation responds to emergencies across Emerging Market countries to ensure civil society organisations and their beneficiaries are supported at their most vulnerable. The Carlyle Foundation seeks to make a positive and sustainable difference to communities in the Emerging Markets. Increasingly we see the effects of climate change on the ability of communities to survive and thrive. Many in these communities rely on climate-sensitive sectors for their livelihoods and have few resources to fight against the impacts of climate change. The Carlyle Foundation’s support to combat the effects of climate change is framed around the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Delivered in collaboration with Carlyle (for further information please see Carlyle’s Sustainability Report), our grants support organisations that mitigate carbon whilst contributing to societal development. The Carlyle Foundation recognises that some social impact organisations will be generating revenues through their activities. To achieve their objectives these organisations often require working capital to grow and scale. In 2008, the Foundation began making programme related investments in organisations whose work aligns with its charitable objectives. The Carlyle Foundation recognises that different types of capital deployed to a range of organisations along the investment spectrum can generate a positive impact aligned to its charitable objectives. To this end the Foundation has sought to identify appropriate impact first investment opportunities to enable it to deploy as much of its resources as possible to generating positive societal outcomes for Emerging Market communities.
