CAN A FLEX PLATE MAKE NOISE?

A loose bolt on a flexplate or a crack between it’s bolt holes can result in a;
knocking or rattling sound. The flexplate can become cracked over time. As a
result, this can cause the it, to wobble. So, you might notice rhythmic clunking
or grinding noises, while the engine is running.

What does a bad flexplate sound like?

Here are some of the warning signs of a bad flex plate: Clunking, grinding,
chirping, or rattling noises from rear of engine when engine is idling. Knocking
noise when engine is shifted into drive or reverse. Heavy vibrations felt
through the driver’s seat when driving at normal speeds.

WHAT DOES A FAULTY FLYWHEEL SOUND LIKE?

You may start to experience grinding noises from the pressure plate and
eventually, the flywheel other parts in the clutch assembly will overheat and
cause them to warp or even crack. A slight delay in clutch engagement or soft
clutch pedal are signs of slipping gears.

Will a bent flexplate cause vibration?

The vibration will be heavy, although not quite as heavy as a failing U-joint. A
warped flexplate causes a vibration through all speed ranges, especially if the
flexplate has thrown a balance weight.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO FIX A FLEX PLATE?

How much is a replacement flex plate? The flex plate or flywheel plate should
cost somewhere in the region of $50-160, on average.

What are signs of a bad torque converter?

When the torque converter starts malfunctioning, you may feel shuddering and
even slipping in overdrive. You usually notice your car shuddering because it
feels like it’s vibrating. Your car will vibrate even when you’re not going very
fast. The shuddering makes the car lag and is very noticeable.

WHAT CAUSES A FLEXPLATE TO GO BAD?

The following causes for cracked flexplate failures: 1) Out of balance engine or
torque converter. 2) Bad starter drive can cause teeth or ring gear to wear
rapidly or break off. Teeth can also break when engine is running and starter is
engaged. 4) Some applications may require starter shims to be used.

What is normal torque converter slip?

Most street torque converters tend to operate in the 3 to 5 percent slippage
range, but this can go as high as 8 percent. A 5 percent slippage factor means
that if the impeller is spinning 3,000 rpm, the turbine is only spinning 2,850,
or 5 percent slower.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR CHEVY SILVERADO MAKES A NOISE?

Check that one for cracks. Best way is from under the truck. Spray a little belt
dressing when it is making noise to see which one it is. Question: I have a
Chevy 15500 Silverado v8 that is making an engine noise. Similar to a baseball
card being stuck in a spoke of a bicycle. Gets louder as you accelerate. 166,000
miles.

What are the signs of a bad flex plate?

WHERE IS THE FLEX PLATE ON AN ENGINE?

The flex plate is a stamped metal disk that mounts the torque converter to the
rear of the engine’s crankshaft. The flex plate has a ring gear around the
circumference to mate with the starter motor. Knocking or rattling noise from
rear of engine. Abnormal noise when operating engine starter.

Why does my Chevy Silverado sound like a baseball card?

I have a “tick” that sounds like a baseball card in a spoke of a bicycle coming
from what I believe is the trans or bell housing. It ticks with the engine and
speeds up with the engine. It’s about the loudness of a baseball card in spokes
of a bike tire.
