RISK TYPE COMPASS: NAVIGATING THE DYNAMICS OF EFFECTIVE DECISION MAKING

Do you instinctively skip through moving traffic to cross the road, or do you
wait for the green pedestrian signal? Do you plan your holidays in minute
detail, or might you just grab the essentials and go? These risk-taking
tendencies will reflect your most consequential personal characteristics.
Accurate identification and recognition of these instincts will shape culture
and enhance decision-making effectiveness at an individual, team and
organisational level.

Adventurous Risk Type
Axial Risk Type
Carefree Risk Type
Composed Risk Type
Deliberate Risk Type
Excitable Risk Type

Wary Risk Type

ACCURATE IDENTIFICATION OF THESE ALL-IMPORTANT RISK INSTINCTS WILL ENHANCE
DECISION-MAKING PERFORMANCE AT ALL LEVELS OF THE ORGANISATION

Neuroscience identifies the personal biases that come into play whenever we make
decisions. Two independent systems contribute to this, Emotion (how anxious or
fearlessly risk-embracing we are) and Cognition (the degree to which we can
tolerate uncertainty or need to make sense of everything). Emotion and Cognition
combine in predictable ways to establish each individual’s distinctive
decision-making style. Research demonstrates how these individual differences in
risk instinct are compounded within the dynamics of group thinking, creating the
undercurrents that shape our decision making.

BASED ON YEARS OF RESEARCH

The Risk Type Compass identifies which of nine Risk Types match our natural risk
instincts.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT THE RISK TYPE COMPASS DECISION-MAKING TOOL WITHIN YOUR
WORKPLACE

To administer the Risk Type Compass questionnaire, you must complete a
qualification workshop, either live on Zoom or on demand via our online learning
platform.

This certification course provides extensive information about how to interpret
and give feedback on an individual’s Risk Type Compass profile, guidance on
facilitating team development sessions as well as an overview of how to apply
the tool to support organisational effectiveness. Alternatively, we offer an
extensive consultancy service to support your use of the Risk Type Compass and
enhance decision-making effectiveness, by delivering feedbacks and team
workshops.

ADVENTUROUS RISK TYPE

This Risk Type can be both impulsive and fearless. Intrepid and not easily
discouraged, they embrace change and seek excitement.

AXIAL RISK TYPE

Individuals who show none of the extremes that characterise the eight Risk Types
are classified as ‘Axial’. They will be valued for their balanced viewpoint and
their neutrality.

CAREFREE RISK TYPE

Agile, questioning, and imaginative, the Carefree Risk Type welcomes
uncertainty, seeks opportunity and dares to do things differently.

COMPOSED RISK TYPE

This Risk Type is cool-headed – remaining calm, reassuring and optimistic even
when others feel alarmed or under pressure.

DELIBERATE RISK TYPE

Self-contained and highly organised, a Deliberate Risk Type seeks the facts and
figures and would never walk into anything unprepared.

EXCITABLE RISK TYPE

Often creative, this Risk Type is reflective and thoughtful yet energised by
change, exciting ideas, and the opportunity to make a difference.

INTENSE RISK TYPE

This Risk Type feels things deeply and reacts strongly. Their own most severe
critic, they don’t take anything lightly and put themselves under pressure.

PRUDENT RISK TYPE

Highly organised and  disciplined,  Prudent Risk Types are conservative, seek to
eliminate uncertainty and have a back-up for everything.

WARY RISK TYPE

Vigilant about risk and troubled by uncertainty, the Wary Risk Type values
stability, respects orderly processes and keeps everything under control.
