An Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), the ED's equivalent of a police FIR, has been filed by the federal agency under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana had recently written to the ED recommending a probe by the agency. He cited preliminary findings made by his officers in the case and the First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by them. The ED case stems from these police complaints, the officials said. Clashes broke out between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri on April 16, leaving eight police personnel and a local resident injured. According to police, there was stone-pelting and arson during the clashes and some vehicles were also torched. Ansar (35), a resident of B-Block of Jahangirpuri, is alleged to be the "main conspirator" behind the violence, the police said. During preliminary investigation, they said, it emerged that Ansar has some financial dealings and is also in possession of several properties which were allegedly purchased through gambling money. The ED is expected to question all the accused and probe their financial dealings. It is empowered to arrest and attach assets of the accused during the course of the money laundering investigation. So far, 25 people have been arrested in the Jahangirpuri violence case by the police, while two juveniles have been apprehended. The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police is investigating the case. Stringent provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) have been slapped against five accused, including Ansar. According to the police, Ansar allegedly had an argument with participants of the Hanuman Jayanti procession that escalated and led to stone-pelting. In October 2018, India signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems to ramp up its air defence, despite a warning from the then Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions. The US has already imposed sanctions on Turkey under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for the purchase of a batch of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia. "We've been very clear with India as well as other nations that we don't want to see them rely on Russia for defence needs. We've been nothing but honest about that discouraging that," Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby told reporters at a news conference here on Friday. "At the same time, we also value the defence partnership that we have with India. And as was evidenced a week ago, we're looking at ways to improve that going forward. That's going to continue because it matters and it's important,” he said. "India is a provider of security in the region and we value that,” Kirby said. US State Department Counsellor Derek Chollet on Thursday said the Biden administration is very much eager to work with India as it diversifies its defence capabilities and defence suppliers. The incident took place in Khevrajpur village under Tharwai police station area of Prayagraj. According to reports, the accused set fire to the house of the deceased after killing them brutally with bricks and stones. The incident has sent shock waves among the locals as cases of mass murder have been reported earlier in the district as well. The victims of the spine-chilling incident include Ram Kumar Yadav (55), his wife Kusum Devi (52), daughter Manisha (25), daughter-in-law Savita (27) and granddaughter Minakshi (2). Another granddaughter Sakshi (5) has survived, police said. Yadav’s son Sunil (30), who was not at home at the time of the crime, is assisting in the investigation, according to police officials. As per the locals, all the family members were sleeping in the courtyard due to the weather when they were brutally attacked by some unidentified men. Locals noticed smoke coming out from the residence and when they rushed to the spot, they found that 5 members were brutally killed. The police have launched an investigation but have not been able to ascertain the cause behind the murders yet. Notably, this is not the first time that a brutal mass murder has been reported in Prayagraj. Last week, four members of a family were stabbed to death in the Nawabganj district of the city. Soon after, another murder of two people was reported by Prayagraj’s Soranv. The police are still investigating these cases. Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party Chief and former Chief Minister of Mayawati has demanded strict action against the culprits. “The news of the brutal murder of five members of the same family in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is very sad, condemnable and worrying. The government should go to the bottom of the incident and ensure strict legal action against the culprits,” tweeted the BSP Chief. The police, however, managed to thwart the attempt to enter the residence of the Ranas in Khar and brought the situation under control. The police said that the husband-wife duo was to leave their house around 9 am to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Matoshree but citing security reasons, the police requested them to stay at home. “If they step out, the law and order situation may go out of hand,” said a police officer. To mock Ravi and Navneet, Shiv Sena workers had also brought an ambulance near their house with a message “reserved for Bunty and Bubli” pasted on it. A worker said, “As soon as they step down to head towards Matoshree, we will give them ‘mahaprasad’ and send them in this ambulance.” Meanwhile, several Shiv Sena workers started camping outside Matoshree on Friday morning after Rana made the statement. Read More Read Less * Sri Lanka crisis: India, IMF consider $2 billion aid; PM says made mistake by not attending meeting on Rambukkana violence April 23, 2022, 06:43 AM As Sri Lanka continues to grapple with its worst-ever economic crisis, several neighbouring countries, including India and China, have said they will extend support to the island nation to help it continue essential imports. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are also set to provide relief packages to tide over the crisis. Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Ali Sabry on Saturday announced that India and the World Bank are considering extending about $2 billion in bridge finance to the island nation, which has been struggling to pay for the import of essential items, including medicine and fuel. In a bid to secure funds, Sri Lanka has been reaching out to several creditors to restructure its debt and also approached China and Japan for help, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, the World Bank is extending $300 million to $600 million over the next four months so that the country can secure medicine and other essential items, Sabry said. Sabry, who is still negotiating a rescue package with the IMF, said while talks with the international lender might take some time, the World Bank has agreed to provide support in the meantime, AP reported. On Friday, Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa said that China had agreed to support his government after a “very productive” conversation with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang, PTI reported. “Had a very productive conversation with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. I reiterated #SriLanka’s gratitude to #China for the longstanding friendship and for assuring support to address some of the crucial needs affecting peoples’ livelihoods and well-being in these difficult times,” Rajapaksa tweeted. On the brink of total bankruptcy, Sri Lanka has to pay nearly $7 billion of its total $25 billion in foreign debt this year. Due to the severe shortage of foreign exchange, the country hasn’t been able to buy imported goods. As Sri Lanka sinks deeper into the crisis, the country’s otherwise thriving tourism industry has also been hit. While tourism hit a two-year high in March, with 100,000 arrivals, restaurant and hotel owners fear that the ongoing economic crisis will prevent a more robust revival in the near future, according to a Reuters report. Thousands of ordinary Sri Lankans have taken to the streets to protest against power cuts and essential food shortages. One such demonstration in Rambukkana left one protestor dead and 13 injured earlier this week after police officials opened fire to suppress the protests. Embattled Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa admitted on Friday that he made a mistake by not attending a National Security Council’s meeting over the incident. “I was invited. But I did not attend. It’s my fault. But I was briefed on the progress that evening,” the Prime Minister told Parliament. The Sri Lankan police transferred three top officers for their alleged misconduct in Rambukkana, PTI reported. Several have also chosen to flee the country. In fact, 18 more Sri Lankan nationals who fled the crisis-hit island republic arrived in India on Friday, with the hapless families who landed at Dhanushkodi in the wee hours being accommodated at the Mandapam refugees camp. League leaders Manchester City kept their nerves in midweek to remain top of the table after Liverpool had overtaken them for 24 hours, and Pep Guardiola’s side should expect to beat second from bottom Watford in the Ethiad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Also Read - Cristiano Ronaldo Thanks Liverpool Fans For Heart-Warming Gesture at Anfield The big question mark for Guardiola is how much he will rotate his squad ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semifinal first leg at home against Real Madrid on Tuesday, Xinhua reports. Guardiola will make changes against a side that is looking increasingly doomed to a rapid return to the championship, but this looks like the sort of game where the first goal for City will be the most important against a rival that is likely to sit deep. Also Read - WATCH: Liverpool FC Fans Stand With Cristiano Ronaldo, Applaud During EPL Match Against Manchester United As it was in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Brighton, patience could be a virtue for City fans. Also Read - Bereaved, Cristiano Ronaldo Will Not Play at Liverpool Liverpool entertain Everton in a Merseyside derby on Sunday and could go into the game four points off the top of the table in case of a City victory. Under normal circumstances, Jurgen Klopp’s men would expect to blow away their neighbors, who are struggling just a point above the relegation zone, but Liverpool also have little recovery time before their Champions League semifinal against Villarreal on Wednesday and Klopp will almost certainly make some changes to his starting 11. Liverpool thrashed Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park earlier this season and a repeat of that could see Frank Lampard’s side drop into the bottom three. The weekend kicks off with a key battle in the race for Europe as Arsenal, fresh from their 4-2 win away to Chelsea, entertain Manchester United. It has been an eventful week for Man United, who were humiliated 4-0 at Anfield a week ago and named Eric Ten Hag as their new coach earlier this week. Defeat at the Emirates would likely mean Ten Hag’s first season in charge will be without the ‘distraction’ of Europe next season. There will be emotions on display when Tottenham travel to face Brentford, who have improved drastically with five wins in six games since former Spurs hero Christian Eriksen returned to action following his heart attack. Tottenham travel in fourth place, although that could have changed depending on the result at Arsenal. Elsewhere on Saturday, Aston Villa look to stop an alarming run of four consecutive defeats when they travel to face an in-form Leicester City, while Newcastle aim to make it four successive wins, when they visit bottom of the table Norwich. As well as the Merseyside derby, Sunday sees Chelsea entertain West Ham, needing a win on the back of their 4-2 midweek defeat at home to Arsenal. Another defeat could mean that Chelsea’s top-four finish would look less secure than it did a week ago. Brighton face Southampton in a south-coast derby with nothing but pride to play for, while Burnley have a crucial match at home to the Wolves. A 2-0 win at home to Southampton on Thursday kept Burnley just a point behind Everton and three more points would lift the ‘Clarets’ above Everton before the ball gets rolling at Anfield, piling extra pressure on their relegation rivals.
