FALL 2022 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: JORDAN TYE

Read Jordan’s Essay >

“It was not until I was a freshman in high school sitting in the El Paso County
Courthouse as a Teen Court volunteer when I discovered my passion for the law.
Having first read the police report of the case of one defendant, my mind
resorted to forming stereotypes. Before meeting the defendant, I envisioned a
disobedient and defiant teenager. Instead, a small, innocent young boy walked
through the door. I quickly realized the impact of our stereotypes and biases. I
could only imagine the stereotypes that my mother endured. In the years that
followed, I worked with many defendants to implement restorative justice
principles and to expunge charges from their records.”

SPRING 2022 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: SATO MAEDA

Read Sato’s Essay >

“Since I was little, I have constantly moved around the world because of my
parents’ jobs. Consequently, I have lived in a variety of places including
Bangladesh, Japan, Indonesia, Switzerland, and the US. My entire life is the
airplanes, the suitcases, the passports, the new schools, friends, cultures,
etc. The experiences I had at each of these places have shaped me into the
person I am today by teaching me to become open-minded, caring, and motivated,
but above all, perseverant and determined to achieve whatever goal I set out to
achieve.”

FALL 2021 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: SHAUN MORAN

Read Shaun’s Essay >

“When people who believe that a better world is possible collaborate and work
together to bring about their shared vision of world bent toward humanity,
compassion, and justice, mountains can move. With my academic credentials and
professional work, I will humbly add my voice to the growing clamor of those who
went unheard for far too long.”

SPRING 2021 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: NOAH BONGIOVANNI

Read Noah’s Essay >

“My name is Noah Bongiovanni, I’m a 21-year old from Erie, Pennsylvania, and
this year, I had my life turned upside down. When the pandemic hit, faced with
no income due to the loss of both my jobs, I was forced to start working as a
driver for a food delivery service.”

FALL 2020 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: ALIANNA LECLAIR

Read Alianna’s Essay >

“Where I’m from, not many people can say they’ve “made it”. I’m surrounded by
people as young as me dying from bullets in their chests. I’m surrounded by
blatant homophobia, even within my own family. I’m surrounded by my own loved
ones struggling to rid themselves of past habits and battle addiction. Most
importantly, I’m surrounded by those stuck in a cycle I refuse to be in.”

SPRING 2020 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: KELLY NAIR ROJAS

Read Kelly’s Essay >

“Individuals who have gone through tough challenges in life can be those who
thrive consistently. They build solid castles with obstacles found throughout
their journeys and avoid blaming others. Nobody comes to this life with
instructions on how to live to optimum capacity. We must figure it out
ourselves, wherever we are.”

FALL 2019 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: TIMOTHY SHEEHAN

Read Timothy’s Essay >

“I am writing this essay today to explain my college journey and how I turned my
life around and became a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and National
Technical Honor Society while maintaining a 3.71 GPA at DCCC, and how obtaining
a scholarship will help me continue my education and reach my academic goals.
Education is the most important aspect to become successful and reach your
career goals and obtaining a scholarship would help me tremendously in reaching
those goals.”
