PIERRE MANSOUR ON THE SHORTAGE OF THE SOCIETY’S WHITE BURGUNDY

We knew that a frost-hit vintage in Burgundy would have implications for our
most popular white wine, so took steps early on to mitigate the inevitable
shortage and to source alternatives.

Recognising that the inevitable price increase would put our Society’s White
Burgundy out of the reach of some members’ pockets, we decided to look for some
suitable alternatives. We wanted to be able to offer members some other
chardonnays which reflect the flavour and style of our White Burgundy.

LES VINS AUJOUX

> This is the source of the bulk of our Beaujolais for the last 50 years, and
> many members will also have tried the fruits of The Society’s work with this
> excellent Beaujolais-based négoce in the form of our bestselling white wine,
> The Society’s White Burgundy, sourced from the Mâcon.

> Dealing with a négociant allows The Wine Society to pick and choose, often
> blending together from different estates in order to end up with a wine that
> is better than any of its parts.

> Négoces have had a huge part to play in the recent history of Beaujolais, some
> of it not so good but some of it very positive. For all its apparent
> simplicity, Beaujolais is a complicated region that is often the victim of its

This is not a cheap wine but really has a reputation for consistency. Over the
last couple of years had a few bottles and always a very drinkable wine, showing
off Chardonnay with oak and tree fruits inc apples. Love it but lacks the
complexity of other wines. Definitely drinkable but no real surprise.

underwhelming. It's an adequate Macon Village but it just doesn't zing in
consumption like many similarly-priced wines from co-ops in that area of

Found the Society's White Burgundy lacking in flavour and edging towards sour
rather than the buttery, rounded chardoney I look for in a white burgundy. I
allowed this chilled wine to come to room temperature to be sure I had no
over-chilled but it didn't warm up enough in flavour for my taste.
