Go the Extra Mile for kids like Kaiden No images? Click here Hi Idella, My name is Julian. With my wife Brooke, we do our best to raise our three kids Maddie, Bailee and Kaiden (and our beloved dog Kaizer) Our son Kaiden has ataxic cerebral palsy and hypotonia. This means he has “floppy” limbs, his movements are shaky, and it is difficult for him to stand. He is non-verbal and he relies on a walking frame and wheelchair to move around. But that doesn’t stop him - he is so determined to ride anything and everything! When Kaiden was born, he had bleeding on his brain. We were told he was likely to die because he was only a few hours old with such a serious condition. Faced with the possibility of saying goodbye to our tiny newborn son, we were given a choice: let Kaiden die or try a risky brain operation. We agreed to try the operation. He was transferred to Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick where doctors drained the blood. He fought through, survived the operation and we were able to take him home after two weeks. To this day, Kaiden requires yearly check-ups at the Children’s Hospital. No-one ever mentioned cerebral palsy as a possibility. We had no idea. But a few months later, we noticed his development was not the same as his sisters. We pushed to get him tested, and sure enough he had cerebral palsy. We have been extremely lucky to get support from Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Kaiden’s been with them since he was eight months old. Today, Kaiden is a cheeky, big-hearted and fun five-year-old (turning six in March). He loves playing with cars and trucks, going to the beach and playing with his big sisters and friends. And he starts “big school” this year! He is determined to stand. I know he will get there because he never stops trying to stand by himself. His drive and determination will see him go so far in life. He is my little hero. Idella, the reason I am sharing Kaiden’s story is because YOU are big part of his story too! I am so proud of how far Kaiden has come. But I hope you know, none of it would have been possible without kind and generous people like YOU. People like you ensured Kaiden received vital early intervention when he was still a baby. People like you ensure Kaiden continues to get the support he needs so he can keep making progress. People like you have given Kaiden the chance at a bright and happy future. Kaiden’s life has changed, because of people like YOU. By going the Extra Mile this March, YOU can help more kids like Kaiden be the best they can be. REGISTER FOR FREE Brooke, Maddie, Bailee and I will be riding for Kaiden and other kids like him.
