Hydrogen is already increasingly proving a preferred energy source, according to
exhibitors at the recent World Hydrogen Energy Industry Expo.

Scaling up: A model hydrogen energy industrial park indicating the scale of the
industry’s ambitions.

The recent Second World Hydrogen Energy Industry Expo (WHE 2024) in Guangzhou
offered cause for optimism among those who view hydrogen as a clean and
efficient alternative to polluting fossil fuels. Visitors to the show will have
been left in no doubt about the prospects for its development in China.
Upstream, midstream and downstream industry supply chains are growing rapidly
and businesses are working together to build a complete hydrogen energy industry
ecosystem.

While hydrogen offers great potential as a clean fuel source, however, and its
use is expanding at pace on the mainland, it is not yet a panacea. The
technology – at least in its current form – is ill‑suited to small scale use,
while limited infrastructure is hindering faster expansion.

This year’s expo had many new hydrogen energy products on display, including
upstream items involved in production, storage, transportation and refuelling
processes; midstream products such as power generation equipment; and downstream
equipment, notably hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Environmental advantages

One company exhibiting a wide range of merchandise was Jiaxing‑based
Sino-Synergy Hydrogen Energy Technology, which had flexible graphite double
polar plates, hydrogen fuel cell stacks and fuel cell systems on show at its
stand. According to Wang Jiaojiao, Project Manager at the company’s fuel cell
stack R&D centre in Guangzhou, its best‑selling fuel cell power generation
system, SynPower S1250, can directly convert hydrogen and oxygen chemical energy
into electric power.

Wang was keen to promote hydrogen’s environmental advantages, saying: “Our power
generation systems are widely recognised as zero‑pollution products as they only
discharge pure water, emitting no dust, exhaust gas or waste residue. Hydrogen
energy is eco‑friendly and many local government departments support its
development. The entire industry is in the ascendancy and the future is
promising.”

Acknowledging there are still safety concerns surrounding the storage and use of
hydrogen, while highlighting his company’s efforts to mitigate the risks
involved, Wang said: “Most of our power generation systems are built using a
modular design that allows different power generating units to operate
independently for improved safety. The malfunctioning of individual units will
not affect the operation of the whole system.”

You Jiazhen, Head of Commercial Vehicles for Guangdong Rising Oriental, was also
optimistic about the development of the hydrogen energy industry. This year his
company partnered with several well‑known mainland businesses to establish the
first Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) hydrogen corridor as part
of a move to address the difficulty and high cost of hydrogen refuelling.

Forking out: Hydrogen high up‑front costs, but offering long‑term payback for
commercial applications.

Describing this development as an indicator of future growth, You said: “The
hydrogen energy industry is still in its uphill stage, but the future is
promising. Rising Oriental’s objective is to work together with other companies
in establishing the hydrogen energy industry chain.”

Commercial sector

Given the exacting requirements for storing and transporting hydrogen, its use
is still mainly confined to the commercial sector, with private adoption a
rarity. The benefits for businesses that buy into it, however, can be
considerable. For example, Rising Oriental sells a 3.5‑ton hydrogen fuel cell
forklift that offers its users numerous advantages.

Summing up its benefits, You said: “The forklift operates almost silently and
produces zero carbon emissions, and it only takes five to 10 minutes to recharge
and has a battery life of up to eight hours. Compared with lithium battery or
diesel forklifts, hydrogen fuel cell forklifts are quick to recharge and can
operate on a zero‑pollution basis.”

While the environmental and operational benefits of hydrogen fuel cells are
clear, however, the downsides – not least the initial upfront costs – cannot be
ignored. To help with this, Rising Oriental offers its customers “total”
solutions, taking into consideration the life expectancy of the equipment, the
number of forklifts a customer needs, and refuelling station arrangements. This
helps to reduce overall costs to about the same as diesel and lithium battery
forklifts.

You explained, however, that even with this help, the financial advantages
really only accrue to large‑scale operations, saying: “In terms of economic
benefits, our total solutions are better suited to the needs of large logistics
warehousing companies. This is one of the reasons why hydrogen energy vehicles
are predominantly for commercial use at this stage and are rarely used by small
companies or by individuals.”

Chi Bin, R&D Director of Guangdong Yun Tao Hydrogen Technology, agreed, saying:
“Hydrogen energy is mostly for commercial use on the mainland at present due to
cost factors. We have, however, already developed hydrogen energy solutions for
sea, land, air and other scenarios.”

Varied applications

The main thrust of Guangdong Yun Tao Hydrogen Technology’s stand was that
hydrogen power can be adapted to many different types of equipment. The
company’s hydrogen‑powered Yunhang S20 drone attracted much attention at the
show and was proof that the fuel is not limited to powering heavy‑lift,
ground‑based applications like forklifts.

Listing the significant advantages a hydrogen‑powered drone offers over its
battery‑powered rivals, Chi said: “This drone weighs 20 kg and can fly for about
an hour. It’s equipped with a 12‑kw hydrogen fuel cell, which is more resistant
to low temperatures and has a longer life than lithium battery drones, so it’s
good for long‑distance delivery and emergency rescue in places such as outlying
islands, mountainous areas and highlands. The prospects of hydrogen energy
drones look even brighter with talks of developing a low‑altitude economy in the
GBA.”

One of the main obstacles to the growth of the hydrogen energy industry is the
expense and difficulty involved in refuelling. Many big companies are trying to
tackle this by co‑operating to buy hydrogen energy vehicles, build hydrogen
refuelling stations and develop applications, calculating that this will help to
reduce operating costs across the board.

Chi, though, highlighted the fact that there are still not enough refuelling
stations available and that China’s hydrogen energy infrastructure has
considerable room for improvement. Fittingly, his company also builds refuelling
stations and develops application scenarios for clients to help them achieve
sustainability and make switching to hydrogen power easier.

Hydrogen fuel cell‑powered drone: Offering real advantages compared with
conventional counterparts.

The 2024 Hydrogen Energy Industry Expo took place from 8-10 August and was held
concurrently with the World Battery and Energy Storage Industry Expo at the
China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou.
