FRENCH FIREFIGHTERS SET TO BATTLE CANADIAN FIRES THAT COULD LAST 'ALL SUMMER'

By Euronews  with AFP   •  Updated: 11/06/2023

Two days after arriving in Quebec to assist their Canadian colleagues in the
fight against the historic fires that are ravaging the country, French civil
protection firefighters and rescue workers are working on operational
preparation.

This is an "essential, indispensable and unavoidable" phase Fabrice Mossé, head
of operations for the southern detachment sent to Quebec, said.

New and intensifying fires are forcing the evacuation of thousands across Canada
as the country battled out-of-control blazes that a provincial minister warned
on Saturday could last "all summer".

Nearly 17,800 square miles have burned since the beginning of the year, well
above previous averages as the country warms quicker than the rest of the world
amid climate change.

The country's west has been particularly hit. After several days of respite,
fires intensified in Alberta, where Friday night the town of Edson saw its
second evacuation since May.

"The fire is so out of control that some forestry crews have had to back off,"
said Luc Mercier, chief administrative officer of Yellowhead County, where Edson
is located. "They can't fight this fire."

Speaking to broadcaster CBC, resident Hayley Waites said the evacuation of Edson
took place in the form of an "enormous convoy" of people fleeing the town.

"When you're panicking to go all out, all you think about is running away," she
said. "But as soon as you leave in the car, you ask: 'What if my house is no
longer there when I come back?'"

In British Columbia, the 2,400-person town of Tumbler Ridge was largely
evacuated as a fire approached within a couple of miles of the city.

In the country's east, Quebec Minister of Public Security Francois Bonnardel
said Saturday morning that the situation in the central and northwestern parts
of the province remained difficult, with several towns threatened.

Fires in northeast Quebec were considered "stable."

"This is a first in the history of Quebec to fight so many fires, to evacuate so
many people," he said. "We are going to have a fight that we think will last all
summer."

Some 14,000 people are under evacuation orders in the province, with Bonnardel
having declared that "we haven't yet won the battle."

Environmental authorities currently list 416 active fires in the country, 203 of
which are classified as out of control.

ROMANIA RECALLS AMBASSADOR TO KENYA OVER RACISM OUTRAGE

Romania's ambassador to Kenya, Dragos Viorel Tigau - Copyright AFP
By Euronews  with AFP  •  Updated: 11/06/2023

Diplomat publicly likened Africans to animals

Romania announced on Saturday that it was recalling its ambassador to Kenya,
condemning racist remarks made recently in Nairobi, the country's foreign
ministry said in a statement.

The incident occurred during a meeting organised on 26 April at the United
Nations. According to a note from the South Sudanese embassy consulted by AFP, a
monkey appeared in the window of the conference room.

"The African group has joined us", joked Ambassador Dragos Viorel Tigau,
sparking indignation.

Bucharest says it was only informed of the incident this week, and "has
initiated a procedure to recall its ambassador",

"We deeply regret this situation and apologise to all those who have been
affected", the ministry said, describing any racist behaviour or remarks as
"absolutely unacceptable".

In a tweet, Kenyan diplomat Macharia Kamau, former number 2 at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, said he was "appalled and disgusted".

"It is a disgrace to have tried to cover up this ignominy. It is intolerable and
unacceptable in any age, and even more so in the 21st century!"

ANNECY CITIZENS GATHER IN SOLIDARITY WITH KNIFE ATTACK VICTIMS AND FAMILIES

Annecy, French Alps. - Copyright AP Photo

Perpetrator remains in custody while police attempt to identify his motives

The French town of Annecy, where several people were seriously injured in a
horrific attack this weekend, is organising a "citizens' rally" in support of
the victims of this weekend's knife attack.

Locals are set to gather at 11am on Sunday for a "moment of solidarity and
fraternity" with those who were injured and their families.

"What happened is unthinkable, we just don't understand," said Laurence Gallay,
a woman in her sixties who had come to light a candle and a stick of incense at
the entrance to the playground where the attack took place.

Gallay, who has been visiting the superb park "for as long as I can remember",
told AFP she will bring her son with her for the so-called "white march".

A 2-year-old boy, who was stabbed in the stomach and chest, is still being
treated in Grenoble after an emergency operation, as is a little girl of the
same age, who is being treated for "three chest wounds".

A 3-year-old British tourist with a stab wound, meanwhile, will be able to leave
Grenoble hospital "in the next few days", according to the magistrate, while a
22-month-old Dutch girl is still being treated in Geneva for three stab wounds.

A 73-year-old Portuguese walker, who was wounded by three stab wounds and then
by police fire during the arrest, "was able to be interviewed by the
investigators". The other adult, a 78-year-old Frenchman, suffered a more minor
injury to his elbow and returned home very quickly, she said.

"We're thinking of you", says one of the messages placed among the flowers,
cuddly toys and red heart-shaped balloons that are piling up in the children's
playground where the attack took place.

Meanwhile, perpetrator Abdalmasih H. has been charged with "attempted murder"
and remains in custody while the investigation tries to shed light on his
actions.

MYSTERY KNIFEMAN

Since his arrest on Thursday, he has refused to make any statement explaining
his rampage. Annecy prosecutor Line Bonnet told a press conference that the
psychiatrist who examined him "noted the absence of any delusional elements",
but added that it is still too early to make a full statement on his condition.

The magistrate added that the charge of "attempted murder" could result in a
life sentence. Abdalmasih H. has also been charged with resisting arrest with a
weapon.

According to the prosecutor, "No terrorist motivation appears at this
stage." However, witnesses heard the attacker "pronounce the name of Jesus
Christ" during the attack. He was wearing a cross around his neck, and two
"Christian images", a Swedish driving licence and €480 in cash were found on his
person.

Abdalmasih H. had recently separated from his Swedish wife, a Syrian refugee
like himself, leaving behind his three-year-old child. He left Sweden in March
2022, after years of stability. He travelled legally through Italy and
Switzerland last year before arriving in Annecy.

After fleeing his war-torn country via Turkey, Abdalmasih H. was granted asylum
in Sweden and obtained a permanent residence permit at the end of
2013. But Swedish authorities say he had failed several times to obtain Swedish
nationality since 2017 because of his involvement in the Syrian conflict.

"I didn't notice anything deviant about him, he seemed like a normal person,"
Moa Englund-Flodström, his former lawyer in Sweden, told AFP. According to
Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, she briefly defended him for a minor welfare fraud
offence.
