THE DIARY OF SAMUEL PEPYS BBC

Photo 12/Universal Images Group via Getty ImageĪt the end of August, he cited
the bill of mortality as having recorded 6,102 victims of the plague, but feared
“that the true number of the dead this week is near 10,000,” mostly because the
victims among the urban poor weren’t counted.

‘Bills of mortality’ were regularly posted. Just as we follow these numbers
closely today, Pepys documented the growing number of plague victims in his
diary. In London, the Company of Parish Clerks printed “ bills of mortality,”
the weekly tallies of burials.īecause these lists noted London’s burials – not
deaths – they undoubtedly undercounted the dead. He soon observed corpses being
taken to their burial in the streets, and a number of his acquaintances died,
including his own physician.īy mid-August, he had drawn up his will, writing,
“that I shall be in much better state of soul, I hope, if it should please the
Lord to call me away this sickly time.” Later that month, he wrote of deserted
streets the pedestrians he encountered were “walking like people that had taken
leave of the world.” Tracking mortality counts Pepys continued to live his life
normally until the beginning of June, when, for the first time, he saw houses
“shut up” – the term his contemporaries used for quarantine – with his own eyes,
“marked with a red cross upon the doors, and ‘Lord have mercy upon us’ writ
there.” After this, Pepys became increasingly troubled by the outbreak. Portrait

I’m thrilled that people are going to get to see Guy larger than life on the big
screen and hear his music in high fidelity. The most exciting thing to me is
that I never have to make the film again. “My husband Paul and I started working
on this film in 2014 when Guy was still alive.

“It’s been a long, long, road,” she tells Billboard. Now, as the pandemic
recedes, the film, which examines Clark’s unparalleled songwriting, as well as
his complicated relationship with his wife, Susanna, and fellow songwriter
Townes Van Zandt, will finally play in front of live audiences, starting Friday
(July 23) in Austin, with one-week engagements in more than a dozen cities
planned throughout the summer and fall.įor Saviano, it is gratifying to finally
have people see and hear the movie in the way it was intended. Inspired by Merle
Haggard and Guy Clark, Vince Gill Shares His Truth on New Album 'Okie'

ARMADA BY ERNEST CLINE

The whole “aliens are trying to destroy the world” thing is pretty
universal.Īrmada is also not a great work of literature. Sure, you’ll get the
main plot points, but you won’t get the jokes, won’t get the references, and,
most importantly, won’t get why this is such a big deal for Zack. The thing is,
if you don’t understand the above references, you may not understand all of
Armada.

Told from Zack’s perspective, it’s packed with geeky pop culture references and
jokes, and thus reads like it was written by someone who writes “Jedi” when
asked their religion on forms, who says “42” whenever someone asks them about
the meaning of life, and who has 1000+ gamerscore on every Halo game. But when
the alien invaders from his favorite game invade Earth for real, Zack realizes
he’s hasn’t been playing a game all these years, he’s been training.Īs you might
imagine from the above description, Ernest Cline’s Armada is a fun, funny, and
action-packed novel tailor-made for gamers and geeks. It’s one of many reasons
he spends his free time playing a space dogfighting video game. Like a lot of
kids, Zack Lightman - the main character of Ernest Cline’s second novel, Armada
( hardcover, digital) - has dreamed about being a space pilot since he saw Star
Wars.

HEART SHAPED BOX GOODREADS

While I was surprised that there was not a discussion of rape in human and other
animal interactions, as it's possible only humans actually perform that act with
malice aforethought, I can understand the exclusion.

There were so many interesting things I shared with other people I know after
reading about the systematic repression of or the marvel of female biology! The
biological facts as well as the past pride and how our current ideas about
female sexuality came to be in both Eastern and Western culture, so for myself,
remember that pgs. 84 and throughout I am gratified with how she doesn't forget
to cite her sources in the Further Reading.

How language shapes the current feeling toward anything is obvious, but I quiet
enjoyed Blackledge's survey of linguistic terms and their origins on pg. I'd
never before realized how late in the game the male role in fertility was
recognized and probably would not have thought about it without the discussion
on pg. I love Blackledge! Her writing is so good! She's thoroughly informative
with an academic bent while at the same time giving her works her own personal
flavor in a way that the reader is aware of when they are reading scientific
fact versus the author's (well informed) conjecture.

FRANCES CHA BOOKS

I’m rooting for Austria, Moldova (I told you I like weirdness) and Lithuania
(amazing voice).

I wonder if the hype will actually materialise in the results – I have a feeling
the jury vote might swing things the other way for them.

To me, it’s trying really hard to be another Dancing Lasha Tumbai (my all-time
favourite) but it just can’t compete. I love a bit of Eurovision weirdness but I
just don’t get the hype around Finland’s entry. But Loreen’s voice is incredible
and she is a Eurovision legend so she will undoubtedly do very well. I was
expecting another Euphoria-type mesmerising performance and Tattoo is a lot more
subdued. I’m interested to see who will win if Sweden doesn’t! Though I was a
bit disappointed with the song.

I asked her what she was looking forward to.

Monika Cvorak is the Guardian’s editor for breaking news and sports video, and
perhaps more importantly for tonight, she is a huge Eurovision fan.

DAVE MUSTAINE 1990

He described his early life as being unsettled and tumultuous – his father was a
violent alcoholic and the family had to move many times to escape from him.

Mustaine was born in September 1961 in La Mesa, California into a family of
Jehovah’s Witnesses. Let’s take a look at Dave Mustaine’s story. But as the
frontman of Megadeth, he has had an indelible effect on the world of thrash
metal, and his fame transcends the genre. A member of the original Metallica
lineup – though sacked by the band before recording their first album – he is
not without his controversies. Their leader, singer, guitarist, and primary
songwriter Dave Mustaine, has legendary status in the world of rock’n’roll and
is lauded as one of the greatest guitarists in history. Megadeth is one of the
most influential metal bands of all time, still going strong and commanding an
army of fans.
