COMMITTEES

COMMITTEE ON ANTI-RACISM AND ALLYSHIP (CARA)

Mission:
The Committee on Anti-racism and Allyship aims to address structural racism,
promote allyship, and enhance the climate of inclusion within the ZSOM
community, by providing opportunities for professional development and
leadership training in efforts to foster health equity within the communities we
serve as educators, physicians, administrators, and future healthcare providers

Structure:
When the Committee on Anti-racism and Allyship (CARA) was established in June
2020, the Executive Committee collected concerns and suggestions from students,
faculty and staff. Five clear themes emerged; Curriculum, Co-Curricular
Programs, Employee Education & Development, Institutional Culture and Immediate
Concerns.

COMMEMORATION COMMITTEE

Commemoration Committee is a committee that honors our anatomical donors,
lovingly known to medical students as our ‘first patients.’ At our core, the
Commemoration Committee seeks to encourage reflection, appreciation, and
humility for our journeys and relationships with the human body, which are made
viscerally possible by the spirit and true gift of our anatomical donors.

The cornerstone of our Committee, and our main project, is the planning of an
annual Anatomical Gift Memorial Service, in which students and faculty join
donors' families and friends at the University Club each spring at the end of
the First 100 Weeks. Students often express gratitude for our anatomical donors
through musical and literary performances, and the families and friends of
donors share reflections of their loved ones, in what has traditionally been an
incredibly beautiful and meaningful experience for all.

Though the service may look a little different this year in light of COVID, we
are committed to finding a meaningful way to honor our anatomical donors and
their families, and supplementing the service with other opportunities for
reflection and expression of gratitude, as much as possible.

Committee email: som.commemoration@pride.hofstra.edu

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Community Service Committee organizes service projects and events for our
medical students to give back to our community. This includes everything from
organizing teams and events for charity fundraisers like St. Baldrick's Day,
Relay for Life, and Light the Night, to local projects like running a food drive
for Island Harvest, participating in Solidarity Day, or teaching hand-washing
and heart-healthy lifestyle tips to local elementary school students.

More recently, the Community Service Committee has helped Student Affairs with
many of the volunteer efforts for COVID19 from helping with making and
distributing masks and PPE to helping in the community with vulnerable
populations, and in hospitals as scribes and with serology testing.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Emergency Preparedness Committee was founded in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy
hit Long Island and the surrounding areas. The committee’s goal is to certify
medical students in emergency preparedness and planning early in their medical
career to enhance their knowledge and usefulness during disaster relief efforts,
states of emergency, or otherwise heightened demand for medical personnel.

Additionally, the committee strives to collaboratively and continually
investigate the need for medical student volunteer efforts and public health
education by maintaining a pulse on the current state of community health
affairs.

NARRATEUR

The Narrateur Committee is comprised of students, faculty, and staff that make
up an editorial board to produce Narrateur : Reflections on Caring, an art &
literary journal that embodies the school’s commitment to self-expression,
compassion and respect for the patient-physician relationship. The art of
storytelling is woven into the curriculum of the Zucker School of Medicine as
part of its mission to strengthen student self-reflection on the road to
becoming critical thinkers and decision makers.

Narrateur serves as a creative outlet for students, faculty and employees of
Northwell Health, Zucker School of Medicine and Hofstra University who wish to
make original works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography or art. The
literary journal seeks to nurture the voices of all health practitioners as they
grapple with the care of their patients, the decisions they must make, their
reactions to those decisions, and the outcomes.

Narrateur gives voice to the challenges and the celebrations of patient care. It
reflects the practice of medicine on the printed page and provides a home for
the health practitioner to express, experience, respect and show compassion for
patient-centered care. It is published once a year in the Spring, by the Donald
and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

many of the beautiful courses and practice facilities throughout the New York
City metropolitan area. We offer opportunities to practice and learn at the
driving range, as well as formal and informal meet-ups at indoor simulators and
outdoor courses. Golf has long been seen as the preferred sport of physicians
due to the unique nature of play. A round on the golf course is possible at any
age, and the pace of play encourages interpersonal exchange in the great
outdoors. The relationships formed and solidified on the golf course can forward
careers and bring a lifetime of enjoyment in a challenging sport where you can
compete against yourself, the course, or your colleagues. Golf is more than a
sport; it teaches tenacity and humility that is valuable to the person and
physician. Hall of Fame Golfer Bobby Jones put it best, "Golf is the closest
game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good
breaks from bad shots - but you have to play the ball where it lies."
