Impact-resistant windows are usually made of both tempered and laminated glass. Tempered glass is heat-treated, meaning that the glass's surface and edges become compressed when it cools. The compression makes tempered glass about five to 10 times stronger than traditional glass. Tempered glass is considered safer glass because it breaks into small pebbles without sharp edges when it does shatter. Hurricane windows can withstand more extreme weather conditions than standard windows Image credit: Shutterstock/anmbph Laminated glass is created by bonding at least two panes of glass with a thin layer of film or vinyl in between, called Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB), to create a membrane designed to catch the broken glass. If the glass suffers an impact, the outer pane might shatter, but the inner layer holds the pieces together. This means the window may crack but will not expose homes to the elements. Standard glass windows are made out of regular float glass that breaks into sharp shards upon impact. Hurricane-resistant windows also have frames made from higher-strength materials such as vinyl or aluminum. The impact glass is also treated with a unique silicone glazing process to keep the glass from falling out of its frame. The frame is made from studier materials and affixed better to its glass with hurricane windows, and is thicker. While storm-resistant windows have extra strong glass and heavy-duty frames, there are also some customizable features such as insulation properties or heat-reducing glass tints.
