Foxglove Summer

I read this book shortly after reading Just For The Summer. I did not like the
former. This one seems easier to read, but I still have problems.

The books are set on the Helford river in Cornwall, close to where I live, and
where I grew up. The author has tried to disguise the location by changing some
things but she has just made a muddle for herself. Now there is apparently the
creek (yes), and dunes, and rocky coves, and a "proper" surfing beach all within
a stone's throw of the village. Oh, and an island! Not sure what the beach huts
are doing on the front cover either.

OK, the characters. Clare is still a boring old bitch as before. Miranda (as
before) is slightly more likeable. I would prefer it if the book weren't peopled
by super-successful painters, designers, authors, TV presenters and footballers.
Just an ordinary person would be more interesting.

There are too many references to long-forgotten events of 20 years ago, which
are not important now.

The only semi-believable romance is the one between Jess and Andrew. I could
almost get that. Clare and Elliot is just sleazy and embarrassing (as it was
before). Miranda and Steve's is so forced (the London trip, the
Steve-running-away-when-the-ex-turns up). In fact, the only reason the author
took Miranda to London was so her ex could turn up and ruin things. Why not
bring him to Helford? She is writing about a closed community, so it is a
mistake to break that and drag someone home. If Miranda could not drive past a
fallen tree, I am not sure how Steve could.

Some other questions. What is Steve's relationship to Cheryl? We are never told.
Who was in Steve's car that day? His mother? I thought she lived in St Keverne
so he would go and pick her up en route to the hotel.

Cheryl and Pablo. What on earth? How did they meet? Why does he propose to her
so quickly? If he has just had a TV presenter I am not sure why he would go for
Cheryl. A very silly sub-plot.

The ending is really weird. It's like about 7,000 words have just vanished.
Suddenly everyone is happy together (including Cheryl and Pablo) and we don't
know how they have got to this point. Obviously rushed.

There are some OK moments if you read this as a comedy about ghastly people.
Read it straight - as I did the first one - and you'll be in trouble.

I usually enjoy Judy Astley's books and Just For the Summer is one of my
favourites which I've read several times. Maybe it's because I love that one
that this sequel was such a letdown. I found it lazy, cliched and with very
little in the way of a storyline. Virtually all of the characters from the
original just happening to be there was really unconvincing as were the constant
references to things that happened back then (20 years ago) which were just
irritating. Some of the characters are quite likeable but Cheryl and Geraldine
are both annoying and unrealistic. The teenagers with their stupid names and
'cool' speak also got on my nerves as did WAG Harriet. The ending was
predictable (apart from the bit with the footballer which was just stupid) and
the 'will they wont they?' romance between Miranda and Steve was a typical chick
lit cliche which is not Judy Astley's normal style. The whole point of the story
(scattering the ashes) was rushed and not believeable and half the plot threads
never got resolved. I've enjoyed almost all of Judy Astley's other books but
think she's gone really downhill with this which is a shame as I really looked
forward to reading it.

I have purchased all of Judy Astley's book since Pleasant Vices was a freebie on
a magazine I purchased prior to a holiday (that was a great bit of marketing!)
and have found this one up to the usual standard. I share the same sense of
humour and enjoy the wry look at family life and relationships, while comforted
that we all share the same quota of monosyllabic teenagers and disapproving
grannies while trying to tackle grey hairs and cellulite. I re-read them
regularly and each new book as a treat. Enjoy, it doesn't have calories and
laughter is a good work out for facial muscles.

I read Just for the Summer many years ago and was a bit concerned that if I
couldn't remember it too well then this book would be less enjoyable. I needn't
have worried. There was enough here to jog my memory but also enough explanation
to make it no issue at all for anyone who hasn't read the earlier book.

Anyway I've just finished reading In the Summertime and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It provided some much needed escapism at a stressful time and I wouldn't
hesitate to recommend it!

times. This is an excellent follow up, it would be lovely to follow these
characters in yet another book. The author knows the area that she is writing
about VERY well, it is very recognisable to anyone who lives close by. It made
