WHAT WE DO



At Breaking Barriers, we assist our participants in enhancing their quality of
life by taking a person-centered approach. We provide services with a high level
of follow-through, quality, and support.

COMMUNITY INTEGRATION

In Community Integration, Breaking Barriers supports participants to increase
their skills, social interaction, and connect with resources in their

PAID INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Breaking Barriers Paid Internship Program offers the people we support the
opportunity to gain valuable on the job training while earning a paycheck.
Through Breaking Barriers business relationships, we will connect the focus
person with an internship that matches their wants and needs.



TAILORED SERVICES

Tailored Services is offered at a 1:1 ratio. This service is for individuals
that need a flexible schedule. The days, hours, and length of time is determined
by the person supported. Tailored Services are used to work on educational
goals, vocational goals, and/or to increase skills in living a more independent
and inclusive life.





CUSTOMIZED EMPLOYMENT (INDIVIDUAL PLACEMENT ONLY, NO CONTRACT WORK, NO
SUB-MINIMUM WAGE) (COMING SOON)

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Customized Employment may include
employment developed through job carving, self-employment or entrepreneurial
initiatives, or other job development or restructuring strategies that result in
job responsibilities being customized and individually negotiated to fit the
needs of individuals with a disability. Our service assists job seekers with
finding jobs tailored to his or her unique talents. This may include a job
carved out to suit specific abilities, self-employment, or entrepreneurship.

 * Pairs the job seeker with a Vocational Specialist who assesses talents,
   strengths and abilities
 * Works on interview skills, resume building, benefits planning and the
   development of personal network
 * Provides coaching as needed to master job skills
 * Guidance for business planning and operations for self-employment

“The services which my son receives from Breaking Barriers have benefited him
greatly.  The DSPs who my son has been receiving support from have been very
supportive, understanding, and patient with him.  My son has started to come out
of his shell and more meaningful conversations are now being held between him
and his DSPs.
He has also learned more skills with the help of his DSPs.  I am involved with
his support and we are starting to problem solve with life skills and with his
college classes, in which he has earned straight A’s.  The DSPs have been taking
my son out for walks in the neighborhood which he doesn’t want to do, but that
is getting easier for him.

Breaking Barriers has truly made a big difference in both my son’s and my life.

ABOUT US

The idea of Breaking Barriers came to exist in late 2013 between two friends,
Ben Sarcadi and Melissa Spicuzza. When discussing the direction they saw their
lives going, the idea of Breaking Barriers bloomed. With Ben’s tenacity and
Melissa’s passion and long-term experience in the field, they turned Breaking
Barriers into a reality.
