For millennia, our primary mode of transmitting knowledge across groups and generations has been through legends and myths. This preference is deeply ingrained in our brains, which process information most effectively when woven into a compelling story. Consequently, storytelling proves to be a more potent tool for conveying complex moral issues compared to pure logical reasoning. Among various storytelling forms, interactive storytelling stands out as the most influential – immersing audiences into a narrative, allowing them to experience its world and characters from within. Thus, there exists no more powerful medium than video games and interactive media, in general, to enable audiences to perceive the world through the eyes of animals. Despite the abundance of impactful documentaries advocating for animal rights and veganism, the gaming realm has seen only a handful of attempts to communicate these critical issues. It feels like our movement is missing out on utilizing the most significant and powerful platform to speak for animals. My aspiration is to change this by demonstrating not only the feasibility of creating such a game but also the existence of an audience eager to support and elevate these projects to prominence. With UNCAGE, I aim to instill compassion in its players and cultivate an enthusiasm for developing more animal rights games within the gaming industry – the largest section of the entertainment industry today. UNCAGE – Total Liberation is my brainchild, born from a deep commitment to animal rights and activism. Since 2011, I've utilized my position as an athlete, engaged with traditional and social media, and used my skills as a media psychologist to advocate for veganism and anti-speciesism. In 2020, I successfully kickstarted the graphic novel "Earthraiser – Voice of the Voiceless," a project inspired by my film concept. Although a subsequent game Kickstarter in 2022 faced challenges, my persistence led to the independent development of UNCAGE from May 2023 onward. Upon sharing my vision with David Parisi, a dedicated supporter aiding with programming, we decided to pivot from Earthraiser to create a playable UNCAGE prototype. David played a vital role in setting up the infrastructure for our dedicated project support team. TEAM David Parisi (he/him) David is a computer engineer who is passionate about both technology and animal activism. He has been vegan for six years and made that lifestyle change when he realized he could still enjoy good food without causing unnecessary harm to animals. He continues to seek opportunities to teach others about the impacts of veganism, both in his free time and in his work as an engineer. Dom Lucchesi (he/him) Dom is an enthusiastic programmer who has played video games his whole life and has been vegan for more than four years. He is eager to combine his love of games with his passion for animal welfare and hopes to drive positive change and awareness through this project. Roger Ribas (he/him) Roger is a dedicated cyber security enthusiast with a deep passion for video games and their potential to drive societal change. He has proudly embraced ethical veganism for more than four years and actively seeks ways to make a positive impact on animal welfare. Kanashi Atisuto (they/them) Kana is a queer and versatile creative who’s been vegan for seven years. They’ve helped out with community and social media management since the Earthraiser game’s Kickstarter campaign and are passionate about total ethics. Christopher X. Ryan (he/him) Chris is an author, editor, and longtime activist originally from the US but now residing in Helsinki. He has been vegan for 26 years and thus has watched the movement bloom from a small but fierce collective of dedicated advocates to a global phenomenon. He has worked on dozens of animal rights campaigns, from fur bans to gestation crate bans and everything in between, and has been part of Patrik’s projects since the inception of Earthraiser. "Shuyin Zheng (she/her) Shuyin is a game developer with a Computer Science background who is interested in both digital and non-digital forms of interaction. She is passionate about animal rights and strives to have a positive impact on the world." Eric Hase (he/him) Eric has a strong passion for animal rights, privacy, open-source software, and games. His work has always been interdisciplinary, mostly combining sourcing, law, and tech. Eric’s particular expertise is in tender management for large IT projects in highly regulated public companies. Jan Kaselitz (he / him) Jan is a motion graphics designer from Berlin, a father of two, and a passionate video and board gamer. Vegan for 10 years he tries to do his part in reducing unnecessary cruelty by raising kids with that mindset. Manuel Sulzer (he/him) Manuel is a self-taught 3d Artist and musician and has always been fascinated by computers and their potential as a creative tool. He strives to be part of the urgently needed change towards respectful treatment of animals and human beings. This immersive video game concept places players in the shoes of imaginary animal rights activists, those courageous souls who risk prosecution to expose – and fight against – the cruelty inflicted upon animals. The innovative setup empowers players to confront the harsh realities of animal abuse while also providing the means to effect change. UNCAGE shares the noble aims of real-life undercover animal rights activism but diverges in its transformative potential. Rather than leaving the viewer passive and disheartened, as many graphic video documents do, UNCAGE empowers its players to become heroes for the animals. I firmly believe this approach holds the key to raising awareness about animal rights, particularly among younger audiences, which is why UNCAGE is aiming for a PG-13 rating. The lack of more interactive experiences that focus on animal rights represents a missed opportunity to champion the causes of non-human earthlings. UNCAGE signifies just the beginning of our journey to establish a game development studio dedicated to inspiring and empowering individuals of all ages to make the world a better place for all sentient beings. CAMPAIGN GOAL AND STRETCH GOALS In order to secure an initial budget for the development of the game, we have a funding goal of 50,000€. That would only be the bare minimum, so we are hoping to go well beyond that first goal, and with every additional 50,000€ we raise, we will be able to hire another full-time member for the development team. Ideally, we are hoping to end up with the budget for a 10-person team at the end of the campaign. Every time we reach one of our stretch goals one animal will be symbolically uncaged until in the end hopefully all of them will be UNCAGED! MY PASSION FOR GAMING I was 6 when I first played pong on an Atari home console at a friend’s house in Iran. I was instantly hooked by the concept of a virtual game in a simulated universe where theoretically your possibilities are only limited by the technology simulating that world. I think part of that fascination was the fact that my own reality at that time was the opposite of the perceived infinite opportunity space I associated with video games as a kid. I was born in a country with an oppressive regime, fighting a senseless war with its neighbor, my father was taken from me when I was 4 and my daily life consisted of mostly schoolwork in a system where physical abuse of children by teachers was commonplace. Whenever I could I tried to escape that reality into a fantasy world where I was strong and a fearless hero who defended all those suffering under oppression and injustice. Comics, cartoons, and video games were my favorite way of entry into that fantastic realm. When I was 8 and we had immigrated to Germany I got my first own console. It was a SEGA Master System 1 and the arcade classic “Altered Beast” was my new favorite game. As you might imagine I quickly developed a seriously unhealthy affinity to this now constantly available gate to my digital fantasy world. As I was going through my childhood and adolescence I was fascinated by the rapid advancements in technology that made those digital worlds more and more colorful and rich. What had started as two lines and one dot developed into a two-dimensional colorful pixel world and with 8bit the sprites became more defined and visually appealing then in 1990 I asked all my relatives for money as Christmas presents and I also worked after school at the Christmas fair cutting chestnuts until my hands were blistered and numb because I had a plan. This Christmas I was going to buy my first console with my own money. I was going to buy a Mega-Drive (the European version of the SEGA Genesis). The main reason I wanted to buy the just-released console was that I had played Sonic The Hedgehog on Master System and I wanted to see that world I loved in its 8-bit iteration in the full glory on the just released 16-bit console. So when I was sitting in the cold shed making little cuts into thousands of chestnuts every day after school I was constantly envisioning how incredible the virtual fantasy world would look on that new tech. The prospect of escape into a made-up world was inspiring me to do better in the real world where I was basically earning my first own money. When Christmas finally came and I took my Mega-Drive home to finally play the game I was completely overwhelmed by the jump from the 32 colors the 8-bit game had to the 512 color pallet of the 16-bit version. As I was growing up I started to dream about the possibility of not only escaping into games as a player but actually building those virtual worlds myself. I decided no matter where my life took me, someday I would make my own game and build a whole universe where those who shared my love for virtual fantasies would be able to experience adventures in a world that I had built. But then my life took a very different course. When I started studying psychology I had to make an important decision that would allow me to focus on my subject. I knew that was spending too much time gaming and knowing my lack of self-discipline in this matter I made the conscious decision to abandon consoles and even the TV set from my life until I had my degree. I think this was important and it did lead to the desired Psychology degree after all. So now I thought I would come back to my old dream after I was through this part of my life, but just one year before I got my degree I won the title of Germany’s strongest man as a vegetarian and went vegan shortly after that becoming an animal rights advocate overnight. This was when I felt that for the first time in my life, I had the power to change the real world instead of escaping into a virtual one. So my dream of building my own virtual fantasy took a back seat to my mission for veganism and animals. That’s 11 years ago now. Then in 2020 after I had just lost my mother to cancer and the whole world was going through the collective trauma that was the pandemic I took all the pain and darkness I was feeling inside and used it as fuel for my creativity, writing the graphic novel of Earthraiser. A story about a special agent who gains supernatural telepathic abilities and becomes a superhero for animals because he can truly hear their voice calling for help. I found an incredibly talented team of artists to illustrate the book and we funded it through a Kickstarter. My next goal was to develop a film adaptation of the story which I spent all of 2021 working on then in 2022 I remembered my old childhood dream and in a pretty severe inner struggle, I finally decided to abandon all the work I had put into developing a base for the film adaptation and instead pursue an absolutely, ludicrous idea to develop a game version of the story without having done anything to prove that I was actually capable of successfully developing a game. I was also blissfully unaware of the numerous projects that had basically exactly the same personal background as mine as in “Adult remembers his childhood dream of making his dream game and convinces a lot of people to back his project” just to discover how hard it actually is to make a great game and totally disappoints his backers. I had no idea how critical the gaming community had become after all those disappointments even coming from big development studios and that’s just one way that I hadn’t done my “homework”. So as it had to be the campaign failed and I buried my dream and went back to flipping cars and pulling trucks. …not quite. If you know me a bit you’ll know that I can be very stubborn when I have set my mind toward a goal. So after my initial campaign for the Earthraiser video game failed, I went back to the drawing board and reconsidered all my decisions. Was it a mistake to switch from my initial plan to make a movie to a video game? What direction should I take the project now? It’s never easy to swallow failure but as a former athlete, I reminded myself that every failed attempt is just one more step towards inevitable success as long as you know what you are doing and you believe in your vision. That’s how I won a national title in a sport where some of my opponents are more than a hundred pounds heavier than I am, and a foot taller too. That’s how I then decided to go vegan and continue to win competitions and set world records defying all the hate and ridicule I had to face just because I decided to do something that nobody in my sport had done before. I remembered how uncertain I had been if that decision was the right one and how rewarding it was to prove all of those who wrote me off in the beginning wrong and know that by doing so I would inspire thousands of young men and kids to be more open to a vegan lifestyle as I was destroying the sexist stigma that was attached to it. And that’s when I knew, what I had to do. I remembered that whenever I wanted to reach a goal that everyone around me thought I’d never reach I went deep inside my own mind and plotted a battle plan to prove them wrong. I knew that in the end, no one would be willing to put in the necessary sacrifice and take the risks that it would take to get this game made the way I envisioned it. So I decided to work on my own and as long as it would take to make a prototype of the game that would then help me convince the world to join in on this adventure. One year later all my work culminated in the decision to switch from Earthraiser which was built on a superhero story to UNCAGE which has a far more grounded world and narrative and focuses more on the animal rights part of the narrative by literally placing the player into the shoes of undercover animal rights activists and even letting them play the animals themself. Now the time has come that I want to present the results of all that work to the world and ask every person who believes in kindness and respect for animals to join me in this revolution I want to start in the gaming industry. I and my team will do everything we can to make this happen, but we need every single one of you to get behind us and help us make it too loud to ignore. Are you with us? Let's UNCAGE the World! RISIKEN UND HERAUSFORDERUNGEN So after having a good foretaste of how challenging it is to make a video game and after working on the game for two years, and investing 100k into the project so far all I can promise you is that I will do everything humanly possible to make "UNCAGE- Total Liberation" become a reality. If this campaign reaches its goal the funds will be sufficient to allow me to continue working on the game for another two years. So I can guarantee that after those two years, I will be able to finish the game and ship it to everyone who supported the project. However, I hope that we will be able to actually raise more so I would be able to bring some of the talented people I got to know over the last 12 months into the project and ideally, we would raise enough to bring together a small 5 to 7 member team that would then work on the project for 3 years and actually build the dream game that I know UNCAGE could be. So paradoxically the more successful the campaign is the longer you'll presumably have to wait for the finished game but on the flipside that long wait comes with huge improvements to the finished game. So with all that being said, I'll finish by saying I can guarantee to everyone supporting the campaign that they'll get their rewards, and in the end, it will be your support that decides how awesome those rewards are going to be, and how many talented artists and developers I can bring into the project.
