By Dr. Dumont Owen Do you dream of being an entrepreneur, but something keeps holding you back? Does that “something” have a name? Fear? Doubt? Risk? Being an entrepreneur does involve risks, and to be successful, you have to deal with fear and self-doubts. But if you really want your own business, you can overcome them, as millions of small business owners have. Do you have conflicting feelings when you think about owning your own business? - Enthusiasm about your future and dread of the unknown? - Excitement about new opportunities and anxiety over changes to be made? - Longing for a different direction and fear of making a wrong turn? - Confidence in your abilities and self-doubt about your chances of success? - Dreams of a newer, brighter future and nightmares about it all going wrong? A career change can involve so many emotions that we lose the ability to envision ourselves in a new role, and it takes a leap of faith to choose the entrepreneurial path. A few years ago, I made the decision to strike out on my own as a career coach. It was scary because, like many of my clients, I’d made several major career changes in my life. I taught seventh grade English, did a stint in Human Resources and enjoyed a long career in higher education. Each transition involved facing new fears and dealing with the stress of making all the decisions associated with a major life change. But this time was different. I had always been an employee with a regular paycheck. Now I would be an entrepreneur with no income other than what I could make in my business. Becoming an entrepreneur terrified me. Thoughts raced through my head day and night: - Could I make enough money as an entrepreneur to sustain my family’s preferred lifestyle? - Was entrepreneurship consistent with my strengths and values? - Would my spouse be supportive of a major lifestyle change that involved me working from home? - Where could I learn best business practices? - How would I market my expertise? - What could I offer as a career coach that would be different from others in the field? - Was my passion for this new direction enough to keep me motivated through the tough times? I was like the “bunny in the headlights,” paralyzed by my fears. Like many of my clients, I had to work through my fear, gain clarity about my strengths and weaknesses and learn to tolerate ambiguity at a major pivot point in my life. It wasn’t easy. I’d been a career counselor for a few decades, and I understood the complexities involved in a major career change, but I couldn’t apply that knowledge to myself. I was drowning in an ocean of self-doubt, that spilled over to everything in my life. Finally, I developed a stress-related illness that forced me to stay still, confront my fears, gain clarity, and plan my future - My future as an entrepreneur. Final Thoughts Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Success takes passion, commitment and enough resilience to keep going when the going gets tough. ] But you don’t need to have every single skill associated with successful business owners. You just need to understand your strengths and weaknesses and build a network of mentors and colleagues to guide and support you through the rough times, and Linkedin is the perfect place to find mentors and grow your network. FEATURED TIP ADD INSTANT CREDIBILITY TO YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE By Dr. Dumont Owen One way to add credibility to your LinkedIn profile is to use snippets from your recommendations to provide social proof that you deliver on your brand promise – the value or experience your clients can expect every time they interact with you. Your LinkedIn recommendations offer powerful social proof of your abilities, but a viewer has to scroll to the bottom of your profile to see them. Use them in creative ways to create more impact… You can use a one or two-sentence snippet in your About and Experience sections to build credibility immediately. Or how about adding one to your banner for immediate visual impact when someone lands on your profile? With a bit of creativity, you can create credibility fast, and we all know how important those first few seconds are when someone lands on your profile if you’re going to compel them to keep reading. The fastest way to get new clients on LinkedIn is by promoting a powerful brand, and your profile is a great place to start. Here are a few suggestions. • Create a customized banner using Canva. You don’t have to have the paid version. Enter LinkedIn in the search field and select “LinkedIn banner” in the dropdown menu. This will display banner templates that you can edit to include your logo, brand colors, lead magnets and more. • Include your brand statement in your headline. Your brand statement should state who you are, who you help, and the results you produce. Ex: I help technical consultants communicate with non-technical marketing departments to facilitate successful product launches. • Record a cover video. Record a 30-second video on your phone and upload it to LinkedIn using the LinkedIn app. The video will play automatically in the photo frame when people land on your profile. Video is a great way to promote your brand because it gives viewers a hint of your personality and what it would be like to work with you. Do you have a question about LinkedIn?
