MYSTERIOUS: RUSSIAN MAN FLIES SAS TO LOS ANGELES WITHOUT PASSPORT, VISA OR
TICKET

By Steven Walker

The incident has brought airline and airport security measures under scrutiny.

SUMMARY

 * Passenger boards US-bound Scandinavian Airlines flight without ticket or
passport, raising concerns about security procedures.
 * Sergey Ochigava, a Russian-Israeli national, attracted attention by wandering
and changing seats on the plane.
 * Investigation ongoing into how Ochigava boarded the aircraft without any
   record or memory.

A passenger arrived in the US on a Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) flight from
Copenhagen without a ticket, passport, or any record that they had boarded the
aircraft. The incident took place in early November on a flight from Copenhagen
Airport (CPH) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and an investigation
is ongoing to ascertain exactly what happened and how.

AN UNUSUAL INCIDENT

The passenger in question, Sergey Vladimirovich Ochigava, is a Russian-Israeli
dual national. According to statements from the crew on the flight, as reported
by The Independent, he attracted attention onboard when he "wandered around the
plane and kept changing his seat," and at one point, "attempted to eat chocolate
that belonged to members of the cabin crew."

Ochigava himself has no memory of being on the aircraft, or of how he got
onboard, although he would have had to pass through various checks, including at
airport security and at the boarding gate. This has led to the spotlight being
shone on Scandinavian Airlines' security procedures at Copenhagen Airport as
part of the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson from the airport is reported
as saying,

> “We can see from our surveillance that he has entered without a valid ticket.
> Copenhagen Airport has provided photo and video material to the authorities
> who are investigating the case. We take the matter very seriously, and it will
> be included in the work we continuously do to adjust and tighten our
> guidelines to improve security.”

The report states that the seat first occupied by Ochigava was listed as
unoccupied on the flight paperwork, and when he arrived at Los Angeles
International Airport, officers discovered that he was not listed on any other
flight arriving into the US that day either. As part of the investigation, the
contents of the passenger's cellphone were also reviewed, but failed to provide
any clues as to what happened. For now, the investigation into this unusual
incident continues.

SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES' PRESENCE IN THE US

Scandinavian Airlines flies daily between its Copenhagen hub and Los Angeles,
deploying its Airbus A330-300s on the route. Data from ch-aviation shows that
the carrier currently has eight A330-300s in its fleet, each seating a total of
266 passengers in a three-class configuration - 32 in business class, 56 in
premium economy, and 178 in economy class. Scandinavian Airlines also operates
three A350-900s on its long-haul flights, and has a further two of the aircraft
on order.

Scandinavian Airlines is the only airline to operate direct passenger services
between the two cities, with Los Angeles being one of seven US destinations that
the airline flies to on a year-round basis from Copenhagen, with the other
destinations including New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), and San Francisco (SFO).
The Star Alliance carrier also flies to Miami (MIA) on a winter seasonal basis,
as well as to Newark (EWR), Chicago (ORD), and Miami (MIA) from its secondary
hub at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN).
