You Tube He's quoting a measured wieght from C&D and MT of 3,130 at the 2:00 mark for the 718 Spyder. In yesterdays 987.2 Spyder FAQ thread there were two real world postings #63 and #67 of the 987.2 Spyder's weight of ~3,070 although with PDK. https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-...der-faq-5.html Perhaps the 718 weight increase isn't that bad at all. Does anyone have the measured eight for their 981 Spyder for comparison? The S with 6sp./manual sport seats/steel brakes/no bose/no xenon/no nav was 2980 w/o fuel and 3082 full of fuel. The 2 way manual sport seats with no heat were 26lb heavier for the pair vs. the buckets in the 987/997 versions. In the newer 981/991 versions the difference is closer to 15lb for two seats total due to the newer buckets having the electric height control. Going to Recaro Profis with steel sliders and aluminum side mounts saves another 24lb over the 987 buckets and ~35lb over the 981 buckets -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by A432; 01-14-2020 at 11:46 PM. R&T January 2010; measured weight 2,940, LWB, PCCB, manual, navi, bi-xenon, sport chrono, auto-climate control Excellence May 2010; measured weight 2,985. Gleaned from pictures; LWB, PCCB, manual, etc. (n/a) Spyder v Cayman issue results below (my favorite issue, Spyder was quicker by about 0.5 seconds on a 30.0 second short go-cart track) Excellence November 2011; Spyder measured weight 3,004. Gleaned from pictures; sofas (actually they are a very nice seat imho), red brakes, manual, etc. (n/a) Excellence November 2011; Cayman R measured weight 2,966. Gleaned from pictures; LWB, PCCB, manual, etc. (n/a) Interestingly they also compared the R to a 997 911 GTS (weight 3,340 with a manual, red brakes, and sofas) in the same issue. The R won the subjective test. A couple of other interesting tidbits from the comparison issue. * Spyder is 44 pounds less than the R. * Pete Stout mentioned it was the best handling factory Porsche he had tested. The differential in weight in pounds, apples-apples, is a fixed, objective number. Do we know what that number is? With so many different options available for these cars it would be tough to find a 981 and 718 optioned exactly the same, I read somewhere that it was like 1-25,000 for two cars to identically optioned. 'IF' we assume that most of the regular things in the car 'can' be the same like seats or stereo configuration then it would boil down to something that the build spec has no control over like the difference in the engine weight with exhaust, 3.8l versus 4.0l. Andres Preuninger mentions at the Goodwood FoS that the difference is about 30kg (66 lbs) and mainly due to the engine and GPF. In math, when we control for all variables and simply look for a differential, its an objective and certain number. In this case, its an exquisite expenditure of time to go weighing cars or comparing cars. Besides having Preuninger tell us, the best we could do next is to convert the stated curb weight of the 981 Spyder using the old weighing methodology to a resulting number using the new weighing methodology and compare with stated curb weight of the 718 Spyder. Or vice versa (convert in reverse, so from new to old methodology and compare). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by 348SStb; 11-08-2021 at 02:05 PM. Was the gas tank full when measured? Never had mine weighed so trying to guesstimate what a standard car would weigh. Thanks! No worries, for that weight (3058 lbs) it was about 1/3 tank of gas, PCCB, LWBS, leather interior, OEM tires but on Forged wheels (by my measurements 13lbs lighter than an OEM set), Titanium Akra link-pipe and JCR exhaust (these two are really light compared to OEM), manual transmission (I believe the PDK is heavier)... and the real weight saver for sure Titanium wheel bolts! I think that is about it, for reference I have Bose audio and had the OEM rubber floor mats in at that time too, if I think of anything else I will update this post. You do have all the lightweight equipment from factory and also very light components. By my guesstimate your car minus the mods and with steels/2 ways and full tank would be roughly 3,230 lbs or so (which is pretty much my spec). And that is a bit more porky than I would like my car to be. I've already got Akra OAPs, not a lot of weight savings mods out there that are reasonably priced lol Reply Like sin911 View Public Profile Find More Posts by sin911 11-09-2021, 02:40 PM #35 Westcoast RL Community Team Rennlist Member Join Date: Dec 2019 Location: Victoria, BC, Canada Posts: 9,227 Likes: 1,276 Received 4,732 Likes on 2,750 Posts -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote: Originally Posted by sin911 Thanks! I've already got Akra OAPs, not a lot of weight savings mods out there that are reasonably priced lol As you say some mods can be very expensive, my goal was if I was going to make a change it would have to have dual benefits, make the car more like I want it but save weight at the same time. Almost every item I have added/changed on the Spyder has followed the plan and I have been happy with the choices and the resulting weigh savings. There is certainly more that could be done to drop weight but that would require a change that is either not cost effective of as you mentioned IMHO reasonably priced. There are lighter wheels but at crazy prices, a Li-Ion battery to replace a virtually new one in the car for example but for me I am happy how it turned out. Weights below are with the factory battery and tires. The only ‘mod’ is the added PPF. The car’s full spec is in the image but the big ones are full leather interior, Bose stereo, iron brakes, and LWB seats. * 3044 lbs with full gas tank * 2960 lbs with about 1/4 tank * 2949 lbs with about 1/4 tank with extras removed (glove box emptied, fire extinguisher removed, frunk tool kit removed, etc) I haven’t seen a 718 Spyder measured in a comparable spec but estimating 3150-3200 lbs with full fuel would be a 100-150 lbs difference on the scales. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by Jawnathin; 11-13-2021 at 06:25 PM. I think the only car significantly lighter out there that's still new is the current Miata.... "Club" spec is at/under 2400... A 2023 Honda Civic, a four door family sedan, weighs 3054 lbs. A 2023 Civic Type R is 3183 lbs. A C8 Z07 convertible weighs 3799 lbs. A 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL63, a Sport Light convertible with two usable seats, weighs 4305 lbs. In general, performance-adding bits make cars heavy. If you put the wheels, brakes, tires, and engine of a BRZ in a 718, youll get close to the weight of a BRZ, but youd lose the acceleration and braking abilities and grip of the Porsche. 3200 lbs is heavy for a five seat economy car, but light for a high performance two seat sports car. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by wizee; 03-07-2023 at 09:05 PM. Some added inputs below for what they're worth… Quote: Originally Posted by 2XIPA Pulled out some old magazines for additional info for the 987 Spyders. The Rs we tested signaled understeer then oversteer, where every Spyder we tried just seemed stuck down front & rear, and unflappable. I suspect the delta on a longer closed course, and especially one with bumps and lumps, would be more significant. Excellence November 2011; Spyder measured weight 3,004. Gleaned from pictures; sofas (actually they are a very nice seat imho), red brakes, manual, etc. (n/a) Customer car in silver over brown equipped with A/C, full leather, Adaptive Sport Seats w/heat, PCCB, etc. Excellence November 2011; Cayman R measured weight 2,966. Gleaned from pictures; LWB, PCCB, manual, etc. (n/a) PCNA press car in Peridot over black, a stripper with no A/C for sure and, iirc, no cupholders, etc; a cool car in theory, but I remember no one wanted to be in it unless we were on the coast. Interestingly they also compared the R to a 997 911 GTS (weight 3,340 with a manual, red brakes, and sofas) in the same issue. The R won the subjective test. High praise, as the 997 GTS was (and is!) a wonderful car. But then so is the 987.2 Cayman R... A couple of other interesting tidbits from the comparison issue. * Spyder is 44 pounds less than the R. Have long sensed the scant delta in weight between 987 coupe & convertible vs the larger delta between the 997 coupe & convertible is indicative of the mid-engined coupe's development coming long after the 986/987 platform was developed. The R also faced an unfair advantage when it came to weight savings as Porsche didn't lighten its roof as it did with the Spyder. * Pete Stout mentioned it was the best handling factory Porsche he had tested. It was, and remains high on my list of all-time favorites… This thread is extremely interesting to me, as it underlines something I've been thinking about lately: Contrary to the perception of many Porsche enthusiasts, the 981/991/992 generation is very light. My daily car, a 991.2 Carrera, is rated at "just" 370hp (and is probably closer to 390) but weighs 3150~ lbs. So it's in the range of a 964 or 993 C2, and quite possibly lighter despite 20-inch wheels and 245/305 tires, water cooling, a seven-speed gearbox, two turbochargers, two intercoolers, and then all of the safety equipment and creature features. The 16/17-inch wheels with 205/245 or 255 tires on those 911s of old, which I still love, look positively tiny. Yet the "basis" 991.2 Carrera's output is roughly on par with one of the most exciting 911s I tested early on, and one of the most vaunted: the 993 Turbo. Looking at the weights given for 718 Spyders so far, you see a similar phenomenon: These are far more complete cars than their predecessors, yet they're similarly light while being much more powerful. Our first modern Porsche daily car, a 1999 986 with very little in the way of leather, creature comforts, a partial power top, etc, weighed in at 2,955 lbs with tiny brakes—so not all that much lighter than a 718 Spyder. It had a 2.5-liter flat six that made 201 hp vs the new car's 4.0-liter (60% bigger!) with 400 hp (double the hp). So the 718 Spyder is impressively light even against the early Boxster despite its massive wheels, tires, brakes, etc and then all of the equipment improvements. Now consider that high-performance 2023 Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas (!) are heavier while even BMW's smallest two-door M cars are getting close to 4,000 lbs…or exceeding it. It's a very good time to be a Porsche customer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by stout; 03-08-2023 at 11:56 AM.
