Every year Michigan will point at one two athletic receiver-ish tight ends from
the myriad tall and athletic guys around the country and decide that's whom they
want to Herbertize into pro prospects. For this year's class they had Andrew
Rapplyea until Penn State pried him out of the class. When Michigan took Deakon
Tonielli the story was they were going to just have one in the class. Then
Zachary Marshall came to the BBQ and ran around some.

People wondering how a receiving target of a 5-star QB for SoCal power-program
Carlsbad could be a considered a "hidden gem" don't know the full story.
Marshall was playing receiver for small Santa Fe Christian Academy, producing
1012 yards and 9 TDs on 44 catches as a junior, also playing defense. Matt Weiss
got a tipoff and traveled over there to see him, invited Marshall to the BBQ,
and Michigan saw something (via Steve Lorenz):

> I'm told Marshall 'absolutely blew (Michigan) away' during a one-on-one
> workout with the staff before the actual BBQ on Sunday afternoon. His visit
> was one the Wolverines were looking forward to and now I expect them to go all
> in for Marshall going forward.

Suddenly two TEs in the class was on again. Marshall committed soon thereafter.

Transfer rules forced him to sit out his first four games at Carlsbad, and by
January he was enrolled (and sick in bed) at Michigan.

Jacob Smith Has Committed to Michigan

Three! Three J. Smiths in the class, ah ah ah!



Plus two.

The highest rated J. Smith to commit so far, Jacob is the edge-playing twin
brother of Jerod Smith; they are not related to linebacker commit Jaden Smith,
nor wavering OSU WR commit Jeremiah Smith. Jacob was an important recruit for
Notre Dame, but once Michigan had his brother turned around it seemed only a
matter of time before the twin followed.

In that time Michigan grabbed fellow edges Devon Baxter, Dominic Nichols, and
Elias Rudolph so there might be a playing time squeeze once they're all sorted
out. Michigan technically has three positions to fill between Heavy (Mike
Morris's job last year), Weakside (Okie, Upshaw, et al.), and OLB (Harrell), and
only got Derrick Moore, Enow Etta and some fliers in the last two classes, so
it's a load-up year. Nebraska was the main competition, with A&M, Wisconsin, and
Kentucky hanging around.

Michigan hasn't had a J.Smith on the roster since 1970s WR Jim Smith. There was
also an end named Jeffrey Smith in the late '50s and early '60s, and a John E.
Smith who played a season here while stationed in Ann Arbor during WW2.

 * HTTV: the only 2023 Michigan preview magazine advocating wheel routes to
   Edwards and Loveland! Digital Edition, Kindle Edition, Print Interest List.
 * Pat Fitzgerald & Northwestern: Seth recounts getting hazed at his fraternity,
   which ended those practices in 1999.
 * Who for Northwestern? Brian says they should go retread. Seth thinks they can
   do better: There are worse lives than being rich in Evanston, Illinois.
 * NIL: Why they can't make all of the donations tax-deductible: Some of the
   schools were sloppier than HAIL! but the fundamental principle is if you're
   running a charity, the purpose has to be CHARITABLE.
 * Seven collectives coming together: Is it a union? Call it what you want;
   industries always have organizations within them to create leverage to
   benefit them. The big pie is the TV money, but the collectives right now are
   just trying to bring some kind of quality and standardization to their
   products.
