"The Essential Schizophrenia Companion, by Robert Francis, is one of the most
readable and informative books on the subject of schizophrenia. Written

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Robert Francis was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1995. He earned a bachelor's

licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). This is Francis' second book on
schizophrenia. He previously wrote On Conquering Schizophrenia.

Francis was diagnosed with schizophrenia circa 1995. He obtained his
Bachelor of Arts in 1993 and his Master of Social Work in 2006. Francis has
been practicing as a talk-therapist for over a decade. His current
professional status is that of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
Based on his personal experience with schizophrenia as combined with his
clinical acumen, Francis offers a rare perspective on successfully
overcoming mental illness. In On Conquering Schizophrenia, Francis offers a
breakthrough paradigm in the conceptualization of schizophrenia and in

There is quite a bit of useful information packed in this easily read short
volume (39 pages). I like that the author emphasizes the importance of
addressing the common symptom of anosognosia, or "lack of cognitive insight",
for those who have it. He shares an interesting viewpoint about managing the
lingering effects of the illness, even while medicated, and also about how we
might positively view persons with this illness as unique beings in their own
right. He does not really address the "negative" (although less common) symptoms
of the illness. And I'd like to ask him. "Since you still have symptoms of the
illness that you state you must constantly manage, why has the (relatively low)
dose of the medication you are on never been increased?" Overall, a good
addition to a library to help families who have a loved one with this illness.
