MARC CHAGALL BIOGRAPHY AND ARTWORK

By Artchive / April 11, 2023 March 13, 2024

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Belorussian-born French artist known for his
poetic, dreamlike imagery filled with rich colors. He was the first of nine
children born into a modest Jewish family in Vitebsk, Belarus. Chagall was
associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range
of formats.

Chagall travelled extensively between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin before
World War I. His early images were based on emotional and poetic associations
rather than realistic depictions of the world around him. Many of his works
depict scenes from Jewish life or incorporate religious symbolism.

Chagall is considered to be one of the most influential modernist artists of the
20th Century. His figurative oeuvre has inspired countless artists in various
mediums over many decades. Despite facing significant challenges throughout his
life, Chagall’s contributions left an indelible mark on art history that
continues to be celebrated today.
